Town will face Cambridge United in their final pre-season friendly at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday 27th July (KO 1pm).

The Blues most recently faced the League Two U’s in pre-season in July 2016 when Andre Dozzell netted for Town in a 1-1 draw.

The game is the first senior friendly announced, although an U23s game at Felixstowe and Walton on Tuesday 23rd July has previously been revealed.

Town had hoped to play a home friendly but the timescale for the annual pitch renovation following the Rod Stewart concert next month meant that that was not possible this summer. The season proper starts on Saturday 3rd August.

Meanwhile, former boss Mick McCarthy has again commented on Town’s fortunes since he left Portman Road just over a year ago.

Speaking to the Irish media about his close friend Chris Hughton’s recent sacking by Brighton, McCarthy said: “He's done a fabulous job getting them promoted and I think he's done a fabulous job keeping them there.

”I don't know if Chris does all the recruitment there but they seem to think that's not worked for them.

"He's done a great job. To keep them in that league is really tough, especially if you're in that bottom half all of the time.

"Maybe they just thought it was time for a change, the same as me at Ipswich. They thought it was time for a change, that went well."

Actually, I think Hughton has much more to moan about if he felt inclined. Potter is an interesting choice, but I can't really understand what more the Brighton owners could have expected from Hughton or why they wanted to get rid of him.

Mick should perhaps ask himself why the club seems happier in spite of relegation than when he was here? Tells it's own story. I think we need a song to remind us (and him) every week of why we don't miss him. I mean it's like having a jealous ex that turns up at work, puts a tracker on your car offers your new squeeze up for scrap on Facebook.

Not that Mick has ever got any team anywhere near the Champions League given he has one of the worst statistical records of any manager to have been in charge in the Premier League. He's acted like a baby the way he's handled his exit from the team. From the minute he banged his fist on the table like a cry baby and said "I'm outta here". Ipswich's gain is Ireland's loss.

Most games I came home bored to tears. It's been awful this year but strangely looking forward to next season and full of hope. We know that football will be on the grass and not hoof ball .percentage cautious boring stuff next season. Good luck Mick with Ireland. It's good to see dinosaurs still roam the earth.

Cakeman added 21:43 - May 22 Firstly it's good to have a friendly against local clubs such as Cambridge. Not sure why we don't play Col U anymore though? Secondly please don't rise to the McCarthy bait. Bitter and twisted people will always try to get a negative reaction. Don't give him or others similar to him (Chris Sutton being another) the satisfaction of knowing that he can get under people's skin. At the end of the day I for one am much happier with us playing under Paul Lambert. Incredibly more enjoyable going to Portman Road these days. No longer losing supporters but gaining them instead.
