Norwood Coy on Future as Tranmere Secure Promotion to League One
Saturday, 25th May 2019 21:45

Blues target James Norwood wouldn’t comment on his future following Tranmere's 1-0 after-extra-time victory over Newport County in the League Two play-off final this afternoon.

"I'm not too sure, we've only just played the final, so it's not for me to comment," the 28-year-old striker (pictured centre above), who is out of contract at the end of June, told Sky Sports when asked about his future following the game.

"I'm going to enjoy tonight, enjoy the next week when we all fly off on holiday and see if I remember the week that’s just gone.”

Norwood, who scored 32 times in all competitions this season, has been linked with the Blues for some months and we understand the deal which would make him Town’s second signing of the summer is a long way down the line and, with the play-offs now over, is expected to be concluded, presumably once the striker has returned from the Tranmere squad’s post-season break.

However, Rovers haven’t yet given up hope of keeping the League Two Player of the Year at Prenton Park for their return to League One.

“I’d clearly love to have James with us, he’s been with us for four years, we extended his contract two years ago," Tranmere chairman Mark Palios said.

"He's at the age he's at, he wants to try himself at a higher level, but we're at a higher level now so that should enter into the factors in the negotiations.

"James and I, I think, have a good relationship. We made an offer, we talked to him, then we just sort of agreed to put it to bed in terms of getting on with the job in hand, which was to get out of this league, which has now been done, so we'll start to talk Monday morning again."

Hate to say it but it's obviously won't happen

I hope I am wrong but I think this potential signing may be slipping away from us. Norwood will obviously be offered another contract with Tranmere on better terms and although I believe we have more clout than Tranmere in financial terms he may think better the devil you know. I will be disappointed if this does not happen now as Norwood does look like a natural goal scorer unlike the Jacksons and Harrisons that we currently have. Time will tell.

If Swansea are also interested which was mentioned on sky then it won't happen for us but who knows with the crappy wage budget we had in the championship we may have just a crappy one in league one so maybe tranmere can offer him more who knows.

Isn't it true Swansea are interested? If that's the case he will be off there

I thought signing him was a cert, but now, I'll be more surprised if we pull it off than if we don't. We have a very poor record of signing players once they have been mentioned in the press. Norwood would be one hell of a signing in my opinion and would give the club and supporters a hell of a boost going into next season.

I was impressed with him today. He's full of desire to chase every ball, makes clever runs and got good technique. I think if we can supply him with good enough service then he could score a lot of goals for us next season. I just hope we can get this one resolved quickly before someone else comes in for him or has a change of heart.

I really rate Norwood, but think James Vaughan is more likely.

He looked a right handful in the game today. Can't think what on earth would tempt him to leave Tranmere for us. I hope I'm wrong.

I will be surprised if this one goes through now,we would've had
more chance if Newport had won the play off,but wasn't to be.
Perhaps get our old nemesis in,Mr Nugent,I know he's getting on a bit,
but would surely get plenty of goals at league one level and he's available
on a free !

Wouldn't blame him if he stays or goes elsewhere. Good player but slipped away with Tranmere winning

Ipswich getting relegated to the championship is like when Leeds, Sheffield united, Blackburn the list goes on got relegated, in the same way when a prem team come down they become the favourites

He could go to Swansea and it be 1 jump too far and end up on the bench or come to promotion favourites ipswich and come up with us potentially

Ipswich to a league 2 player is a dream move, league 1 or not

And just remember the comments how if we didn't sign Jackson the season would be over and look how that worked out

Hope I'm wrong but I've gotta feeling that he has made up his mind to stay with Tranmere.

A lot of pessimistic comments on here.

I think he was being respectful to Tranmere with his comments after the game and clearly wants to celebrate and savour the moment.

Coming to Ipswich would be a major deal for him and I reckon a signing is imminent.

Lets have a little faith in the management to get this one over the line.

It would be wrong of him to say amidst the celebrations that he was leaving and if was staying he would have said so ! This is very much in the balance i feel. 32 goals is a great total in a single season and i hope we get him!

A friend of mine is a Tranmere fan and we went to the playoff final. I appreciate they are now in the same league but when Norwood held aloft the 3rd placed playoff cup he had tears in his eyes and appeared to be saying goodbye, not just to the fans but also the chairman.

Dissboy is spot on.

If we get him great, if he stays at tranmere good luck to him. We need to move on to another target and not leave it late when choice is restricted.

Looks a feisty player, with a bit of an edge and a good positional sense: just the type you love to hate if you're the opposition. I have always thought it likely a Championship club will come in for him, but if we do manage to clinch the deal, I think he'd be a great acquisition. Not all that optimistic though, but then that's me.

He was coming out of contract & so was free to speak to other clubs since January. I would expect that the deal is already done, probably since news of our interest broke a few months ago. He's at an age where he chances of playing at his highest possible level are starting to close & despite 2 promotions he knows he won't get into the Championship with Tranmere in the immediate future. This is his time to move.
The Swansea link is more of a concern than Tranmere's playoff win I would suggest, although I still think he has already agreed a contract with us. Lambert would have sold the move to him.

People saying he looks a natural goal score but didn't Jackson in league 2?

In his shoes,if id scored 32 goals in a season I would not then consider leaving one league1 club for another ! If he's as good as is reported then numerous championship sides will be making offers. Can't see this happening and wouldn't be overly disappointed. We cant expect to attract players just because we won the Uefa cup in 1981 !!! There was huge excitement last summer with the purchases of prolific lower league scorers who if fit will score more than enough to keep us in with a shout this coming season. At this point in time if Norwood has ambition coming to us would be a peculiar move for his career.
