Pompey Linked With Renewed Harrison Interest
Sunday, 26th May 2019 20:18

Portsmouth are reported to have renewed their interest in Blues striker Ellis Harrison.

Pompey, beaten in the League One play-off semi-finals, targeted Harrison last summer while the 25-year-old was still with Bristol Rovers, then again as a loanee in January and, according to the Portsmouth News, manager Kenny Jackett is ready revive his interest this summer.

Harrison, who cost Town £750,000, started the season in Paul Hurst’s XI but very infrequently after Paul Lambert took charge with injuries sidelining him for spells.

In total the former Wales U21 international made nine starts and eight substitute appearances during 2018/19, scoring just once, in the home draw with Sheffield United in December.

With Town expected to complete the Bosman signing of Tranmere striker James Norwood and with another frontman - perhaps former loanee Will Keane - in boss Lambert’s sights this summer, Harrison is likely to be well down the pecking order once 2019/20 begins and we understand the Blues would listen to offers should they come in for the Newport-born attacker.

As previously reported, Blackburn Rovers were keen on Harrison last summer and again in January - when they also showed interest in fellow striker Kayden Jackson - and could also resurrect their pursuit during this close season.

Meanwhile, Premier League Brighton and Hove Albion are among a number of clubs eyeing a move for Portsmouth’s former Town central defender Matt Clarke.

We understand no one has yet made an offer for the 22-year-old, who was named in the League One Team of the Year after another impressive season for Pompey, but his departure for the top flight or the Championship would be little surprise.

As TWTD previously revealed, this would be good news for the Blues with Town understood to be due 20 per cent of the profit Pompey make on Clarke, who is believed to have been valued at £50,000 when he was a makeweight in the deal which saw Adam Webster join Town in the summer of 2016.

Swansea and Stoke have previously been linked with Clarke, who has been widely valued at £5 million, a fee which would yield the Blues a sell-on of close to £800,000.

Elsewhere, defender Jonas Knudsen, who will leave Portman Road when his contract is up at the end of next month, has again been linked with Middlesbrough, as well as German side Freiburg and teams back in his native Denmark.

Boro were previously understood to be among the clubs interested in the 26-year-old in January, along with Stoke, while Danish clubs FC Copenhagen and FC Midtjylland were also reported to be interested.

Clint & Oldboy...Clarke went to Portsmouth as part of the deal that allowed us to sign Webster. So we couldn't really have ever had both.

Would not be upset to see Harrison go. Sadly both he and Jackson can not do the basics required of a footballer be them professional or amateur. Both can not trap the proverbial bag of cement.
They both look the part and have a bit of pace but that's about it.
The decision I still get bitter about was when we let Clarke go. An excellent player who has proved his worth at Pompey and will do so at a higher level. A better defender than Webster and the club switch made between them certainly favoured Pompey.
All history now and we build again. Hopefully with Paul Lambert in charge I believe he would not let players like Clarke go.

Watching Norwood in the lge2 play off final really makes you realise what we are lacking in front of goal. This guy worked relentlessly for 90 minutes and made every situation difficult for defenders, fought for every ball. I'm not suggesting he would be the salvation of ITFC but at least looks like he wants to win football matches! Harrison and Jackson showed very little desire, let alone skill required to score goals. Yes, Jackson has pace but did nothing with it. How many clever runs did he make last season leaving defenders is his wake?🤔

Clint Eastwood. What? Ur post doesnt make sense. Clarke AND Webster should both still be here? How does that work? Clarke was part of the deal that brought Webster to the club, or we wouldnt have got him. And then, Webster wanted to leave, as in his own words we were just a stepping stone to bigger things for him.

I'd keep Harrison thought he would be a key figure for town this season if fit. If his injuries don't improve then maybe think of letting him go. We need competition up front. Keep Jackson as well these players surely want to prove themselves in league 1. Still bring in Norwood & maybe Keane for a season, see how his injuries do.
It should be a good forward line for this division.

I would not sell him yet. Give a run next season. Look what happened with Keiffer Moore especially the goals he put away last season. But we can't all be managersand in PL we trust. COYB's.

Dont think we will keep both Jackson and Harrisson------I prefer Harrisson if fully fit (ha ha!!) as good pace and strong and decent target man.

Next couple of days could be interesting.

Harrison may have something but he is probably not going to show in at Town and Lambert does not seem to fancy him- we should get some cash in - best for all parties.
Fair play to Clarke - young lad moving to Portsmouth and really proving himself. the deal at the time seemed to make sense - lets hope any money we get is invested wisely.
Woolfenden looked Ok at Palace and Luton last season - got to give him a go this season.
Keane is injury prone and we should steer clear.

What about a deal bring Clarke back and let them have Harrison sounds a fair deal to me?

MMTash: I don't think the Matt Clarke deal ever seemed to make sense. In fact, I think this was one of our biggest mistakes. Saw him as a 17-year-old making his debut (?) against Wet Spam in a friendly, and I was sold. A great prospect even then, and we let him go. Since that time he's proved himself to be a great young player with a future now probably beyond our level for some time to come. I don't think Webster was any better, and Pompey certainly got the better of that deal.

Let him go definitely, lets get a decent striker in

Good track record in League 1 vs an injury prone cheap striker. But we have Evans. So it will be the latter.
Can't believe people think Clarke sell on funds will be reinvested. How may times does Evans have to do it before the penny drops.

It depends so much on form, fitness and wages. However, there is also the question of what formation we will play next season; if just one up front then he could well become superfluous. I would prefer 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.

We have made booboos over the years and it won't stop now. Bringing back ex players likely to be another

We have let a lot of promising players go in the last 2-3 years who are making a name for themselves all because someone wanted to be surrounded by proper blokes who have continually let us down big time!!

Theres just one problem with Jackson and Harrison......they dont score goals 😂😂. GET RID...USELESS

It's not the players that were signed at the beginning of season, it's the club with the ‘losing mentality' coupled with lack of ambition ! Harrison and Jackson will score plenty of goals at league one level, unfortunately it probably won't be for Ipswich! Clueless posting as per !

Harrison and Jackson have scored 45 goals between them in 3 seasons, we need a strike force that can return that in 1!! For me it's about looking beyond next season and building a championship standard squad, not lge1. The 2 of them are just not prolific enough. A fit Freddie and Lankester, add another 2 (maybe Norwood and Keane) and we're getting there.

Take him. Arguably one of the worst strikers we have ever signed, especially for that fee.

Let him go - I don't rate him at all

I liked what I saw of him, but yet another player with a season disrupted by injury and the Hurst muddled rotation selections! Marcus Stewart said he's never going to be a 20 goal a season striker though and given Lambert so far is favouring 1 up top, I'm not sure he would see much game time with Judge the preferred number 10 option. I think ultimately I'd be sad if he left but would understand if it were a financial decision (manager doesn't think he'll play much so better to cash in) and same would be the case with Jackson.

As for Clarke - like many, was dumbfounded when he left. However, a sell on fee would be great - and if Villa could now buy Mings for anything upwards of the £8m Bournemouth paid us for him then we could be due some more fees. Any chance Man City could buy Cresswell too please?! ;-)
