Town to Face Fortuna at Four-Team Pre-Season Tournament
Friday, 7th Jun 2019 09:17

Town will face sister club Fortuna Düsseldorf at their four-team pre-season tournament, the Interwetten Cup, in Meppen on the German-Dutch border on Sunday 14th July the club has confirmed.

The Blues will take on Fortuna, whose fans have become a regular sight at Portman Road over the last decade with Town supporters also having made the trip to watch the Bundesliga side, in a 2pm kick-off at the Hänsch-Arena with the games lasting 45 minutes and going to penalties if the scores are level at full-time.

The other two teams in the competition, Dutch club FC Utrecht and German third-tier side and hosts SV Meppen, will play one another at 3pm.

The two losing teams will take part in a third-place play-off at 4pm with the winners meeting in the final at 5pm.

Town and Fortuna previously met in a pre-season friendly at the Paul-Janes-Stadion in the summer of 2015 when the German team won 4-3.

Tickets for the Interwetten Cup are now available here with Town fans advised to buy standing tickets in the ExxonMobil grandstand and seating in the KiKxxl grandstand in blocks K and L. ""Town are looking at providing travel packages to Germany with details to follow.

The Blues also play a friendly in Germany the previous weekend when they face newly-promoted Bundesliga team Paderborn in Steinhagen near Bielefeld.

A list of Town's pre-season fixtures can be found here with the Blues not expected to announce any further first team friendlies.

Unusual format and not what any of us were expecting, do they have 'Rush Goalies' and 'Jumpers for goalposts'.......asking for a friend!

On another note McCarthy 'I'd be delighted with a draw' re: Ireland away to Denmark in the upcoming European Championship qualifiers - where have we heard that before?

Anybody get the feeling we could end up at the bottom of that tournament?

The Intert*atten cup should be a thrilling occasion. I love it when something that could have been worthwhile turns into a totally meaningless 'Mickey Mouse' event where nothing will be learned. What's the point?

And pity England can't play 45 minute tournaments, we might of actually won stuff since 1966 if that were the case!

Maysixth and chepstowblue,

Totally agree.

Wouldn't it have been more worthwhile for both players and fans if there had been two 90 minute games against two different teams?

I just think that way, it's more of an excuse for a few days away 😀

Wow, this format seems like a LOT of fun, especially with the Ipswich/Fortuna link. Whoever wins that match will immediately gain a boatload of supporters for the final. Just seems like a wonderful day out. Have fun!
