Striker Aaron Drinan’s loan spell with his former club Waterford has ended, the League of Ireland club has announced.

The 21-year-old was due to remain with Waterford until the end of the month but he will now return to the Blues having scored seven times while back with the club from whom he joined Town in January 2018.

Speaking in April, Drinan, who won his fourth Republic of Ireland U21 cap as a late sub as his side was beaten 2-0 by Brazil in the semi-final of the Maurice Revello Toulon Tournament this afternoon, said he hoped his goalscoring form with Waterford would put him in manager Paul Lambert’s plans with U23s coaches Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg reviewing footage of his performances.

"It gives something for the gaffer to think about if I'm scoring over here because obviously they've got relegated. It will be good if I keep the run going,” he said.

Drinan, who will hope to make his first Irish U21s start in Saturday’s Maurice Revello Toulon Tournament third-place play-off against Mexico before returning to Playford Road ahead of the start of pre-season training on June 24th, is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Blues but has been on the bench on five occasions.

A former Cork City youth player, Drinan is contracted to Town until the summer of 2021.

MooseJuice added 19:54 - Jun 12 I'm not sure what sort of level Waterford is, but having checked their Facebook supporters page they seem to genuinely think he'll be missed. Wonder if Lambert does actually want to have a look at him or whether he's being moved on.

Radlett_blue added 09:49 - Jun 13 Unless he seriously impresses in pre-season, Drinan does look like one of those many young players we've signed, never given a chance & then moved on, only for them to do well elsewhere and us regret it. See Rhodes, Marriot, Hourihane, Clarke, Moore etc etc.

I don't think I've seen a single article about him being involved in any Town team, always loans etc. When we signed him a lot of us thought he could be the next Murphy. Seems to be a lot written about him considering how involved with the squad he is, i.e. not at all. This is his third manager and he still seems to be on the outskirts, you'd think he'd either be near the team or out of the club by now. Let's see this time around

There are even more games next season and we cannot play Norwood in every game in League 1, the Carabao Cup, EFL Trophy and FA Cup ! Given no one seems completely sold on Jackson (promising though he may be), that Sears cannot be guaranteed to contribute even if he gets fit, and given the one area we don't have youth coming through in is the Number 9 position, so there has to be a chance if he is motivated and good enough to impress PL.
