Harrison at Pompey and Closing in on Move
Thursday, 20th Jun 2019 15:04

Blues striker Ellis Harrison has been spotted at Portsmouth’s training ground as the Welshman moves closer to a switch to Town’s League One rivals.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Blues from Bristol Rovers last summer, was targeted by Pompey manager Kenny Jackett when he was still with the Pirates, again on loan in January and once more early in the close season, although it was understood their interest had cooled more recently.

However, the Newport-born frontman was photographed at the Hampshire club’s training ground today. We understand the deal is well progressed but not yet complete.

Harrison, who cost Town £750,000, started the season in Paul Hurst’s XI but appeared very infrequently after Paul Lambert took charge with injuries sidelining him for spells.

In total the former Wales U21 international made nine starts and eight substitute appearances during 2018/19, scoring just once, in the home draw with Sheffield United in December.

Portsmouth's new move for Harrison is likely to be a result of the income they will receive once former Town defender Matt Clarke joins Brighton, a fee of £3.9 million having been reported.

Town will receive 20 per cent of the profit Pompey make on Clarke, who it is understood was valued at £50,000 when part of the deal which saw him move to Fratton Park and Adam Webster join the Blues.

No issue with this, the boy showed promise early on but we didn't see enough of him. Cut our losses and reinvest. He looked better than Jackson to me and I agree both suffered from shocking service last year but still... not enough to convince me long term.

Hope that means we have someone else lined up. Suspect if we do it will be Keane. Just hope he stays fit if it is

I don't think he's what PL wants as a striker. For me he doesn't offer a goal threat and while I don't think Jackson does either, I'm expecting PL to us thsi as an opportunity to sign replacement. Liklihood is that more will be going soon.

I believe that we'll regret letting him go. That is all.

Not happy with this scenario at all. What little we saw of Harrison in my opinion he was better than Jackson. No he did not impress very often but was hardly given a chance. Selling him to Portsmouth will I fear come back to haunt us. Just hope I'm wrong.

Thought this might happen he will prob be a decent player in league 1 but the thing is he had a couple of injuries & only scored once. Would he really help win promotion? That is the type of player lambert has to sign a player with Norwood to score us out of this league. If Bart goes too surely money will be available. Interesting times.
Good luck anyway Ellis just don't score past us

I hope we don't regret this move. But Lambert is making the squad “ his” and I do trust him. I wonder if Jackson will also be on the move though?

Simply a cr@p decision. Selling strikers again - dejavu? We want to get out of this division nd cannot see Bosmans helping too much

Looked awesome against West Ham. Things didn't quite go his way with injuries but thought he showed enough promise to be considered for another chance this season. I did think at least Harrison or Jackson would no longer be with us next season, perhaps they might even both move on. But in League One they might of been really lively. Portsmouth seem to have made some good signings in recent years so the fact they want him makes me think we might be missing a trick here possibly.

In all fairness, they mentioned cuts due to the financial deficits the club is facing. I guess to an extent taking this shortfall and the debt the club is in, unfortunately beggars can't be choosers with who we can and can't hold onto. We don't want to end up do a Bolton, Coventry and what Portsmouth went through. It's always easy to say about investing and buying players, but in reality where is the money going to come from. If Evans spends a load of money on players then we will be stuffed with a transfer embargo. Of the top of my head there is presently Man City, Chelsea, Birmingham and Bolton who are in this situation. In all fairness and I do appreciate that city and Chelsea are a bit different from the rest, but my point is is that we have to be very careful. Unfortunately and I may get shot down for this comment, but Ipswich is not exactly a super trendy centre of the earth where we can sell ourselves to big investors. All I'm saying is that we have to be very carefully with our spending in league 1 and that unfortunately we will lose our better players.

PL ses him in practice every day and know what he will get from him. No problems with this. Rather have Lamberts team than Hursts.

i'd want to keep both him and jackson, both proven at lower levels, seems like an odd one to sell that kind of player now...

Saw enough of him at Bristol Rovers.and if he rediscovers that form id have him ahead of Norwood,Jackson and Keane. Not happy with this at all. Sad to say but Pompey are probably more likely this season to make a promotion push which may have been the deciding factor for him !

Personally I think its the correct decision, Jackson needs to follow him out. PL is doing things his way and if he doesn't see him fitting with his plans then move him on. Look at our goals tally from last season, doesn't that speak for itself?

Nobody is mentioning Jack Lancaster, he will be like signing a new player and has huge potential. Was impressed every time he got on the pitch!

Would like to have kept both him & Keane to provide a focal point up front, one is not enough with games coming thick and fast. Really hope to see Keane signed, he may not be brilliant in the air for his size, but a quality player who will help others play better and would be perfect alongside Norwood & Judge, with hopefully Edwards/Jackson/Lancaster retained as pacy options.

I imagine a left full and goalkeeper will also be signed to replace the two leaving with probably a few more heading in the other direction also.

In true (more recent) Town tradition, I presume he will be sold for far less than he cost us. Let's forget he was bought at £750k with Hurst's £8m war chest (of Waghorn, Webster, Garner sales) but presume the £300k or so fee Pompey have had accepted will be locked away with the Clarke, Mings and Webster sell on clauses 🙄

A lot of good points made here Wkj etc. But, for whatever reason, if he doesnt want to be here then its unlikely Lambert will force him to stay, loan or otherwise. Just hope we have another striker lined up.

Never really worked for him here so no surprise he is moving on. Would like to see a decent experienced attacker to replace him

Never been a big goalscorer even at Bristol rovers too many people getting carried away with one deflected goal all round game not good enough having said that I'd get rid of Jackson as well we've got young players as good as these two Connor Washington looked good for Ireland the other night probably out of our league though i reckon we'll end up taking a risk on Will Keane.

We have to trust PL on this one. Maybe he's got another target lined up. Norwood will need some support.
