Aston Villa are reported to have had a £12 million offer for ex-Town centre-half Adam Webster turned down by Bristol City, while it's claimed that the Robins have put a £30 million price tag on the 24-year-old with the Blues set to receive some of the profit the Championship side make on the defender.

According to Sky Sports, Villa have had a £12 million bid rebuffed, while the Bristol Post claim the West Country club are after as much as £30 million for the one-time England U19 international's services.

Webster joined the Robins from Town for an initial £3.5 million last summer with the fee potentially rising to £8 million and some of those top-ups are almost certain to have been paid over the course of the season.

The sell-on in that deal is understood to be the 10 per cent routinely included in most of Town’s sales, while Portsmouth would be due 20 per cent of anything the Blues receive as a result of their sell-on from the 2016 move which saw Webster join Town.

In addition to Villa, Newcastle United, Leicester City, Southampton, Burnley, Watford and Everton have also all been linked with Webster this summer.

Even in an inflated market it appears very unlikely that Bristol City would achieve anything approaching £30 million for Webster, who has never played in the Premier League, but even so the Blues’ share of a deal should one be concluded could well reach the £1 million mark.

Town have already received one sell-on windfall this summer with the deal which saw Matt Clarke move from Pompey to Brighton last week believed to have yielded the Blues £770,000.

terryf added 21:01 - Jun 26 Whilst the likes of Garner and Waghorn may have wanted to leave and lets face it at the time letting McGoldrick go was no big deal for most supporters, I really felt , at the time, we should have done two things. Made more effort to keep Webster and tried to get back Carter-Vickers on loan. We would probably have still been in the Championship with two good centre-backs. Mind you we'd have probably sold Webster at the end of the season for £5 mill. Unfortunately we let Webster go and never replaced the strikers with anyone already proven in the Championship.

midastouch added 08:05 - Jun 27 It's time we start putting 20% sell on clauses for players we sell that are young and may have the potential to play in the Premier League at some stage. All we'd need is one to go through at £60 ot £70 million (which might sound mad but it could well happen one day) and it would feel like we've hit the jackpot! We often seem to sell fairly cheap so at the very least get a decent sell-on clause percentage in there to ensure we might stand to gain considerably at some point in the future. It's always best to cover your a** as best you can in these things!

Skip73 added 09:07 - Jun 27 Why do we always sell our players for a pittance? I admit he's not worth £30m but the club never holds out for a great offer. A year after we sell Webster for £3.5m hes now worth £12m. Just goes to show what a soft touch we are.

Ok so we got some money in but what are they worth now? and if we still had those players would we now be in league one? Would the extra wages have cost us more than relegation has? Now look at what we replace them with and weep.

Brockleyblue added 16:20 - Jun 27 Does make you wonder why Webster and Clarke were let go if they are as good as the experts seem to think they are, and why, in their place, Town were reduced last season to playing in central defence combinations of: Luke Chambers (tried hard, but no one is chasing his signature); an out of position midfield loanee; an ageing injury-prone pro on a short-term contract; and unproven players who previously had only played in League 1 and League 2. A sad reminder of the pronounced drift and lack of direction and foresight shown by the club in recent years. The end result: we got relegated, and are now also forced to look on as Bristol City and Portsmouth benefit financially far more than us from the sales of one-time Town players.
