EFL Trophy Draw Next Friday
Friday, 5th Jul 2019 23:54

Town will learn their EFL Trophy opponents when the draw for the group stage is made on Friday 12th July at 12.30pm.

The draw for the competition, known as the Checkatrade Trophy in recent seasons, will take place on talkSPORT.

The Blues’ first ever EFL Trophy campaign gets under way in the week commencing September 2nd with the games streamed by the EFL.

The competition is regionalised on a north-south basis with eight groups of four in each. Those groups will feature three senior sides drawn from Leagues One and Two plus one academy category one U21 team, who play all their matches away from home.

Town’s group will almost certainly not feature Norwich City’s youngsters with the authorities having prevented “high-profile clashes” with local rivals at that stage of the competition in previous seasons.

Am I the only one that feels a tinge of embarassment that we are in this competition? Hopefully it will give us a chance to win a cup game or two and may go some way to restoring our appetite for cup games, so may feel different once it starts, but I really hoped we would never be playing in this competition. How times change.

Would we get another star above our badge if we won it?

Like McDonald's staff do when they learn how to put fries in a box?

Great, I can't wait!

This is the reality kicking in of what has happened to our once great club.

What better than a great club?

A club that can fall into nothingness and come back even stronger.

Have a little faith and stop being so negative

Tbh after last season I'd happily take a checkatrade final at Wembley and I know most of you negative people would to. Once a blue always a blue, no matter the situation, about time the armchair warriors got up and actually supported our club rather than slating it.

I hate the phrase "it is what it is"
However, we are in the third tier now, it happens to far bigger clubs than ours
We are still a great club
These games give us a fantastic chance of getting to Wembley for the first time in 20 years
Support the club and be positive
There should be a ban on the phrase "once great club" on TWTD

I understand what your saying Jabberjackson, but to be labelled a ‘once great club' is more than most clubs can boast including our foes up the A140 can be called. You cannot take away achievements from the past. The future is bright it is blue and white. Keep the faith.

Negativity needs to be dropped now, we start again today with our first friendly and there is no point in bemoaning this competition. Ideally we wouldn't be anywhere near this trophy but if we are in it then we should get behind the boys and accept that this could be great experience for some of the fringe and young players. I'm looking forward to the change of scenery, even if it's not the kind any of us wanted.

Being positive is one thing but when nothing has changed in term of the clubs attitude and approach, (trying to get promoted on the cheap) it's a leap to expect things to suddenly and magically work out differently. I think we need 2-3 quality additions including 2 defenders and can't see us finishing top 2 with the current squad but hope I'm wrong. It's vital we bounce straight back into the championship at the first time of asking, anything less will be a disaster.

Of course bluearmy_81 all ITFC supporters hope you are wrong and we do finish top of the league but as you point out it won't be easy.
Thankfully, as I know you will agree, we still have an owner ploughing fist fulls of money into the business with the full intention to get promotion at the first time of asking and hopefully all us regular attending supporters can play our part as well.

I really hope we use this as nothing more than a chance to give the kids and fringe players a go. Those who want a cup run need to see what it did to Sunderland Portsmouth's promotion pushes.

I think you have to accept that we are massovely down the pecking order for signings Bluearmy - we are not that desirable an option and I would sooner recruit minimum decent players, rather than a boatload of Jonathan Douglas' etc.

I don't know what you mean bluearmy_81, you have already accepted that ME loses money year on year, most of the teams in level 3 have to be self funding and without doubt, Sunderland aside, ITFC have substantially better facilities than most other sides at this level.
That certainly doesn't get promotion but thankfully we are not in the same state as several other sides....look at poor old Bury as just one example, what a great shame that owners of such teams over extend the business and potentially bankrupt it.
Plenty of mistakes over the years at Ipswich there is no doubt, but even last season ITFC spent more on player purchase than the winners of the Championship.
