Paderborn 3-2 Town - Match Report
Saturday, 6th Jul 2019 16:06 Jordan Roberts and Kayden Jackson were on target, the latter from the penalty spot, but the Blues were beaten 3-2 by new Bundesliga side SC Paderborn in their first pre-season friendly at the Stadion Laumeskamp in Delbrück.
New keeper Tomas Holy was among those to start, playing his first game for the Blues since his summer switch from Gillingham, with manager Paul Lambert fielding a different team in the two halves, each a mix of youth and experience.
Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes as Town arrived at around 2.20pm following a three-hour trip from their training base close to the Dutch border.
James Norwood, Alan Judge, Jon Nolan and Gwion Edwards were all in the stands with the injured Freddie Sears with none of them in action in today’s game.
Among the inexperienced players in the XI before the break was attacking midfielder Armando Dobra. The 18-year-old Albanian U19 international was getting his first taste of senior football.
Roberts, starting as the lone striker with Teddy Bishop behind him with Dobra on the left and Jack Lankester on the right, won an early freekick but Andre Dozzell’s ball looped beyond the far post.
Paderborn, also fielding a mix and match side rather than a full-strength line-up, had their first opporunity on three, a loose ball falling to Felix Drinkuth, but his shot flew well over Holy’s goal.
The game began in a more competitive manner than most early season friendlies with the Blues winning two more freekicks with a German defender blocking a low Dobra strike from one. A corner followed the second with a Jack Lankester shot looping into the arms of home keeper Michael Ratajczak.
From Ratajczak Paderborn broke very quickly, passing the ball slickly and Kai Pröger eventually smashed a shot to Holy’s right from the edge of the box and into the net before the Czech keeper could move.
Despite going behind the Blues continued to find openings, Dozzell and Bishop feeding in left-back Myles Kenlock, who scuffed well wide, then Dobra, who rounded the keeper before being dispossessed by a retreating defender.
On 16 after good work from Dozzell, playing in a deeper midfield role alongside skipper Cole Skuse, Bishop played in Roberts but the former Crawley man dallied when he should have taken the chance early and the opportunity was cut out.
Two minutes later, Paderborn doubled their lead. The Blues played themselves into trouble midway inside their half, Babacar Gueye profited and fed Tobias Schwede to his left, from where he shot across Holy.
Christian Strohdiek was booked for a foul on Roberts on 20 and picked up the game’s first yellow card. Dozzell’s shot from the freekick was headed out by a defender.
Myles Kenlock picked up Town’s first booking for a foul on lightning striker Streli Mamba as Paderborn threatened to score again but Schwede on this occasion scraped wide from an angle on the left.
Just after the half hour, Holy made his first save for Town, blocking from Mamba after Toto Nsiala had given the ball away on the edge of his own box.
The home side made it 3-0 in controversial circumstances in the 34th minute when Gueye escaped beyond the Blues’ backline - according to the linesman at least, however, he looked well offside - and slipped the ball past the advancing Holy. Town boss Lambert and assistant Stuart Taylor complained bitterly to the referee.
Two minutes later, Town pulled a goal back. Paderborn skipper and ex-Brighton man Uwe Hünemeier played a pass back to Ratajczak, who delayed his clearance from inside his six-yard box allowing Roberts to block it over the line to make the scoreline 3-1.
Klaus Gjasula shot well over for Paderborn, who having established such a commanding lead were well in control, although with the Blues battling away gamely and seeking to carve out openings when in the final third.
A minute before the scheduled end of the half the Blues again played themselves into trouble but Holy saved Sebastian Vasiliadis’s low shot. Just before the break Dobra was shown a yellow card for a high boot.
Town had started the game brightly, making the early running and might well have scored, until the home side netted their first goal on the break.
The second followed soon afterwards with the Bundesliga team capitalising on the Blues trying to play football in their own half and giving the ball away, something they did on more than one occasion.
When in the final third Town look capable of creating chances but not taking them, with new frontman Norwood in the stands. Roberts’s goal was down to the striker’s persistence and the keeper’s complacency.
The Blues’ second half XI warmed up on the pitch at the break with Paderborn also changing their entire team.
Emyr Huws, playing his first game for the senior side since December 2017, was in midfield with Flynn Downes and Idris El Mizouni, behind lone striker Kayden Jackson, with Danny Rowe on the right and Bailey Clements on the left.
Tristan Nydam was at left-back with Janoi Donacien right-back with skipper Luke Chambers and Corrie Ndaba the centre-halves.
Christopher Antwi-Adjei hit an early effort wide for Paderborn before Jackson saw an effort from the left of the area blocked. Huws was just prevented from getting to the rebound by a defender and the ball rebounded behind.
On 65 Jackson and Rowe interchanged passes and the ex-Lincoln loanee was just thwarted by the last defender as he darted on to a return ball.
Two minutes later, the pair almost combined again after Huws had sent Jackson away down the right but Rowe had strayed offside as the pass came in from the former Accrington striker.
After a mid-half drinks break, Town were awarded a penalty when Jackson was felled by Luca Killian having beaten him down the left. The frontman took the kick himself and rolled the ball to Jannik Huth’s left as the keeper dived to his right.
The second half had lacked the intensity of the first but after the goal it became more competitive. On 78 Downes, as feisty as ever in midfield, was booked for pulling back a Paderborn player as they broke.
As the game moved into its final 10 minutes right-back Donacien crowded out Cauly Oliviera Souza after he had been found in space in the box.
The second half XI passed the ball around neatly and for long spells in the closing stages although without creating an opportunity.
In the 88th minute, after Huws had chased back a long way to win the ball after a loss pass had been played behind him, Town again played themselves into problems in their own box forcing Bartosz Bialkowski, on his 32nd birthday, to save from Souza.
Neither side threatened again before the referee’s whistle ended a more than usually entertaining friendly.
There was little between the sides in the second half with Town making the scoreline a more respectable and not unrepresentative 3-2.
Jackson took his penalty well, however, as in the first period it was difficult to see from where Town might score with new striker Norwood likely to make his debut at the Interwetten Cup next Sunday.

Got to say here, I actually agree with 1 or 2 of Dolphins multiple posts. 12 players out and 2 in ain't exactly what we were expecting. Absolute no bearing for me on purchasing an ST, I would have brought it whatever, so don't feel mugged off in any shape or form. |  | |

My point on quality over quantity. You can have 10 players on £3k or £4k a week, that's say £30k or £40k a week combined. Of you could have 2 or 3 players of a much higher standard on £10k or £15k a week. Now 2 of those players could be match winners where they make something out of almost nothing. Personally I'd rather we target those sorts of players rather than having a bigger squad full of chaff! I know we can't afford to stack the team full of players like that top to bottom but we need to have them in certain areas, You could argue Judge is one such player. Norwood might (fingers crossed) prove to be another. Huws if we could keep him fit might tick the box but still some uncertainty about his knee. We need at least one top draw defender. Hopefully we're fine in the goalkeeper department. So I think we need at least one more good defender and one more good striker. I'd rather 2 or 3 quality signings than another 10 mediocre signings. But I do realise with Evans it's unlikely to happen as he doesn't want to pay the wages so we're pretty much left hoping and praying the youth can step up and fill the void. |  | |

Yes he dropped some clangers last season but hopefully he'll be up to League One. Let's give him a chance and see what happens this season. Do you also hold Chambers responsible for global warming? Its just so obvious whats going on....reducing squad down to bare bones even to the point of bringing in minor youngsters, not Dozzell etc but some with no 1st team experience at all. I think weve got our squad already with Judge maybe leaving.....thats not a top 6 squad in league one. Evans is defo cutting his cloth now, not willing to take any chances at all. Like Cat will always attend but it does just seem we are a downward spiral.....hey ho.....it will all soon begin...then its crazy support head on but until then its hound, shout, grizzle WHERES THE SIGNINGS! 🬠| | |

Anybody noticed BlueBoy81 (I think that was his username) has gone all quiet of late? Haven't seen any of his posts for a while. And Swn98 has gone AWOL. Prob been out in Spain all summer or maybe he's switched allegiance to the Republic of Ireland now his idol has moved on to pastures new. Although have had my differences with some of them I do miss their posts! If we had Blueboy and SWN98 back on here getting them in the conversations with Dolphinblue and ITFCSince73 would be an explosive cocktail. Evans has been cutting his cloth for years now, I think Paul Taylor was the straw that broke the camel's back! We might of just been a plaything for him. Like a new toy where the novelty soon wore off. He might have new toys to play with in his business empire now which he gets more joy from. Maybe he discovered Netflix and he just watches box sets all day now and he can't be assed so much with ITFC. Who knows, but clearly he's not nearly so invested in Town as he once was. When the stakes were raised with other richer owners buying Championship clubs and he saw he'd need to pump in a lot more cash to stay competitive he clearly raised the drawbridge from what I can tell and went into damage limitation mode. He had us ITFC running in Windows Safe Mode for some time now and I fear we're not going to get any significant hardware upgrades under his watch! | | |

This really is a dreadful website.
I have just read the match report and saw that there was 80 odd comments. Typically they were by the noisy few (37 different contributions).
Dolphinblue - your first point is well made but the to bombard this site with "insults, more insults" etc is tiresome. The club had to get rid of players has the wagebill is crippling for a league 1 side. I actually think more will go - Bart, Donacien and Jackson. Cannot comment on Judge as he has not gone and the Sun is about as reliable as this site is with "the we have been linked" tales.
If you look at all the relegated clubs from premiership to league 2, not a single.club has made many signings. In fact we are exactly like them whilst we balance the books. Signings will be late.
As for the Chambers and Skuse haters on here - it is vitriolic nonsense written by "sad little trolls" (cheryl cole words today). Just give it a rest and wait for the season to start.
Phil - when are you going to police this site. I don't suppose you will as 87 or 88 comments on here make it look like a semi worthy story, but when you see only contributions from 37 people then you know this site has become a joke and irrelevent. | | |

I've been making comments for 18 months or so. I never comment in the hope of getting up marks. As many, many do.
I comment on being a town supporter of nearly 50 years, and how I feel regarding the club and team. There will be posters who don't agree with what I say, some who do.

Phil is just providing the news, surely we can't expect him to police each and every comment? Given we live in a democracy that cherishes freedom of speech (supposedly!) then the comments section should be an open house for all. Phil's job is to provide excellent news and that he does fantastically.
