Garbutt Loan Signing Confirmed
Friday, 12th Jul 2019 14:18

Town have confirmed the signing of Everton left-back Luke Garbutt on a season-long loan. TWTD revealed that the 26-year-old was set to join the Blues for the 2019/20 campaign yesterday.

Garbutt has already joined up with his new team-mates in Germany and seems likely to make his first appearance in a Town shirt in one of the 45-minute games at the Interwetten Cup in Meppen on Sunday.

The Blues have been in the market for a left-back this summer with Jonas Knudsen having departed at the end of last season.

Myles Kenlock was the only other established left-sided full-back, although Tristan Nydam, primarily a central midfielder, can play that role and filled in during the second half at Paderborn on Saturday.

Garbutt joined Everton’s youth set-up from Leeds in 2009 but has made only eight starts - three in the Premier League - and four sub appearances - two in the top flight - for the Toffeemen.

However, 5ft 10in tall Harrogate-born Garbutt has gained plenty of senior experience while out on loan at Cheltenham, Colchester, Fulham, Wigan and Oxford United, where he spent the whole of last season and latterly impressed in a left wing role, another position where the Blues are looking to add strength this summer.

Contracted to Everton until the summer of 2020, Garbutt has also won England caps at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 levels.

Very good signing. A experienced Centre-back would be good, but left back was my main concern.

Good news; we're weak down the left, if he turns out to be any good we stand a good chance of signing him on a free at the end of the season, if not, so what.

Welcome Luke, come and make Kenlock earn his money.

I can see him playing as a left winger and backup for Kenlock as well which is a good mixture. Also I would expect if he fits in well ITFC be looking to bring him in as a free transfer either in January or the end of his contract at Everton. Welcome to the club Luke and ignore any negative comments on this site

Good news. An area of the squad that badly needed re-inforcements and it's always nice to add players who have experience of the league you're playing in. Hopefully he'll be used as a left winger where he sounds to have been more effective at Oxford and then he can fill in at left back whenever Kenlock is unavailable.

Good to get this one over the line. I think he could be a surprise package on the left of midfield as well as cover for Myles. Janoi played at left back for Accrington even though PL considers him a centre-half or right back he can fill a gap if required but I wouldn't want him to be a full time option. Another Striker and Centre Back please

Looking forward to seeing him play. There's always a buzz about watching a new signing play at the start of a new season as you never know quite what to expect and of course there is always that hope inside that you've finally got one that is going to make all the difference. Good luck Luke. I hope you have a very successful season long loan at Town and that we all have something to celebrate come the end of the season.

Can see him play wide in front of Kenlock and they can help each other, welcome to our club Luke.

Talk of LB, talk of LW, but could we be looking at playing with Wing Backs ? Regardless, this is as good a loan as a League 1 side could hope for.

Folks asking for more cover at CB forget that PL dropped Skuse in there at times last season so maybe we thinks we have enough there, which does leave a gap up front for Mr Murphy to return, something am thinking is a better move than I originally thought. HOWEVER, how are we going to get all these players in the team if they fit, esp in Midfield.

I like the sound of this. Welcome Luke. He could fit in immediately or provide depth. We'll have a useful team if we can stay away from injuries.

I actually hope he has come in to play in that left wing role rather then LB.
Having just made that statement I'm not an advocate of playing square pegs in round holes, and at 26 he really should have established himself as to where his best playing position is.
If he looks to not having a future at Goodison Park we could benefit at the seasons end unless he catches someone else's eye.
I really think that Kenlock should be given time in the LB slot as to my mind he's never really let us down when he has played and certainly deserves a chance at the level we now find ourselves in.
Welcome Luke, I hope you have a blinding season with us.

Think this could be a shrewd bit of business. I think he's on a fair bit of money at Everton and they will not be renewing his contract. He's playing for his next contract so hopefully will be incentive enough for him to show that potential with us this season and be a great addition

I understand that we've actually signed him and it's not a loan....

Good signing. Everton mate next door rates him. CB and CF needed now.

His contract at Everton expires at the end of the season - so it's almost as if he is not a loanee
