Gerken's Colchester Return Confirmed
Saturday, 13th Jul 2019 13:44

Colchester United have confirmed that keeper Dean Gerken is rejoining them following his release by the Blues at the end of last season.

Gerken has been training with the U’s and is expected to play in today's friendly at Welsh Premier League side Cefn Druids.

The 34-year-old came through the youth system at Colchester and made 126 senior appearances during his first spell with the North Essex club before moving on to Bristol City in 2009.

The Rochford-born keeper joined Ipswich following a trial in the summer of 2013 and went on to make 113 starts for the Blues.

The game that stands out for me was the Crystal Palace cup match a few seasons ago when he was the only senior pro playing. He was the captain and was so good with the kids. We were excellent that night, so hopefully the kids have pushed on from then to help us in League 1.

Of all the players released over the summer only Knudsen and Gerken seem to have found new clubs so far.

He was unfortunate that Mccarthy thought he was as good as Bart. Clearly he wasn't because he was unable to control his box & importantly come for cross. He was a good back up keeper

Hopefully he relishes his new challenge, hell of a shot stopper when he is on his game, but sadly too many ghosts in his game in the Championship.

Best wishes Dean and thank you for your service to the club. Until recently back up to an excellent keeper in Bart but stayed focused and professional throughout.
