Former Lincoln Defender Wilson Training With Blues
Wednesday, 17th Jul 2019 16:32
TWTD understands free agent former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson was training with the Blues squad at Playford Road today.
Town are very much in the market for another senior centre-half with skipper Luke Chambers and Toto Nsiala the only experienced central defenders at the club, ahead of youngsters Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba, although Cole Skuse impressed at the heart of the defence against Sheffield United towards the end of last season.
Chambers will miss the opening game against Burton due to suspension, while Nsiala suffered a hamstring injury at the Interwetten Cup, which appears likely to see him miss the first few weeks of the season.
Wilson, 30, will hope to show manager Paul Lambert and his staff that he is the man to fill that vacancy and win a deal at Portman Road.
Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.
A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.
However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.
Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of last month as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Good god, depressing where we are at now

If this is true it has more than a "Smattering" of desperation on our part!! With the greatest of respects to Lincoln, who are now a League 1 side, he couldn't command a regular place last season in league 2?? Oh dear!!

Two feet, player, free? Get him in, he's good enough for Ipswich Town Football club.

Some might not be IMPressed that we are shopping in the bargain basement. Don't know anything about him so not really sure what to make of it. Hopefully he'll be a surprise package if he joins but we can't expect miracles when shopping at Poundland.

Another right sided central defender. Although he sounds like he once had potential, I'm not so sure that this guy sounds as promising as the lad from Bury? However, this guy has had his foot in the door so he is probably closer to actually signing.
I was hoping that we would go back for Tilt this year, as I believe he is a free agent now? I guess I'm just a dreamer though?

Trac70 - agreed. This is a very sorry time to be a Town fan. Laughable!

Remember Lincoln beating us in the FA cup a couple of seasons back was 'a giant killing'. Now we are scrounging around looking to sign one of their cast offs. Worrying times folks

If Lambert sees Doncian as a centre back try him out there as thought he looked ok last season when given a chance in the team

Someone give Evans a fist pump might move his brain up a bit.

Our fans are far to tolerant look where we are scrounging around for players who can’t even command a regular spot in league two! Other teams are speaking up against their owners and making demonstrations without alternative options yet our fans want to back the guy?

Wow, we're now looiing at Lincoln rejects, how low can we sink?

We really are entering a new chapter in the history of ITFC where by and large we're looking largely at players from low leagues that very few people know about, the bar is slowly going down further and further.

Although if you check wiki quickly, he scored 873 goals in 21 games for Lincoln. That could be handy.

Agree, not particularly inspiring - and an indication of the talent pond we find ourselves fishing in.
But all the indications have been pointing in the direction of limited investment; the hope is that by careful recruitment and management, bringing in players who want to come and perhaps prove a point, we might assemble a squad of sufficient experience, youthful energy and enthusiasm to compete in League 1. If this doesn’t prove to be the case, then it’ll be we reap what we sow. And that becomes a depressing thought, even before a ball had been kicked in anger.

Skip 73 as low as Evans wants to take us .

It is disappointing that we seem to be looking at players that do not excite us. But, I don't see any multi billionaires coming to buy the club so PL has limited options.
What is concerning is the injuries which are already happening. Is it bad luck or does the club need to look at at it's medical team?
I am still quite positive for the season ahead and will continue to give my full support.

I’m afraid that the brutal reality is that we will only be paying nominal transfer fees, if that. We are fishing in a very dubious pool. We do need a centre-back, but I suspect that Tilt’s wages would be more than we could afford.

Appreciate where we are in terms of the level of player we can bring in due to finances but I have 2 comments on this:
1. There is surely better out there
2. If there isn't, would rather we gave more opportunity to Wolf and Ndaba
I guess no harm in taking a look, but would be very concerned if our 'experienced' options were Chambo, Nsiala and Wilson.

Lots of superb bed wetting over a player who may likely be FIFTH choice centre back.
At what level do you think we'd be able to realistically get a fifth choice centre back?
Too high a level and they'll want to be starters. From our level they'll want decent money for the league.
This is a cheap guy who has experience in the leagues, can provide cover for the first few weeks alongside Woolfenden or Ndaba and then won't be seen again when everyone is fit.
This is the sort of signing you make when you have two experienced defenders and two promising kids to back them up.
