U23s Win at Lowestoft
Wednesday, 24th Jul 2019 22:25 by James Ager

Town's U23s continued their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory away against Lowestoft Town on Wednesday evening thanks to goals from trialist Harrison Myring and skipper Aaron Drinan.

Myring, who has just turned 18 having been released from his scholarship with Leicester City at the end of last season, started on the right wing and fellow trialist Quevin Castro - who featured and scored in Saturday's U23 friendly win at Sudbury - started in a central midfield role.

The former took just three minutes to make an impact on the game by opening the scoring when he cut in and beat a defender before finding the net with a composed left-foot finish.

Drinan and then Lounes Foudil both stung the palms of home keeper Luis Tibbles in the following ten minutes, while Jake Reed came closest at the other end when he curled a freekick just over Adam Przybek's bar on the half-hour mark. Moments later, the same player struck the far post with a good effort from the edge of the box.

Reed was causing the Town defence problems and he latched on to a long ball that wasn't dealt with, but somehow toe-poked the ball wide when he would've expected to hit the target.

As the half-time whistle was approaching, Przybek got down well to block a powerful header from Shaun Bammant following a right-sided corner.

Four minutes after the restart Town came close to doubling their lead when Drinan played in Myring, but the trialist's impressive first-time effort was clawed away from the far top corner by Tibbles.

However, within a minute the hosts had netted what was probably a deserved equaliser. A ball into the Town box looped over Dylan Crowe, who had been introduced at the break and was making his first appearance of pre-season, and Reed took a touch before finding the bottom corner.

On 56 Reed was teed up by Marcus Wilkinson but the striker's fierce shot was blocked and from the resultant corner, Town broke and grabbed what turned out to be the winner. Kai Brown burst forward and released Drinan, who cut across a defender before coolly lifting the ball over the on-rushing Tibbles and into the roof of the net.

Six minutes later sub Allan Viral was penalised for a foul and former Town schoolboy Jack Wilkinson struck a freekick which took a deflection before crashing off the woodwork.

A number of substitutions then somewhat disrupted the flow of the game, although in the final five minutes Viral pulled a shot just wide and Brown forced Tibbles to make a good block at his near post.

Myring will undoubtedly have impressed the Town coaching staff with his well-taken goal, a number of dangerous crosses, and his willingness to run at the Lowestoft defence at every opportunity.

Castro had a fairly solid game in the centre of midfield and did well to break up a number of attacks from the hosts, but he also forced Tibbles into two good saves with long-range efforts.

Drinan worked hard up front on his own before receiving a knock and being substituted, but he will have been pleased to find the net.

Barry Cotter also had a good game at right-back and was assured in defence, while also looking to get forward and support attacks when the chances arose.

U23s: Przybek (Egan 72), Cotter, Smith (Crowe 46), Castro, Henderson (Fehrenbach 69), Webber, K Brown, Scott (Viral 57), Drinan (Scott 72), Foudil, Myring (Smith 69). Unused: Baggott. Att: 340.

I don't understand with our defensive problems why Cotter does not feature more, again tonight he gets a good write up. Maybe PL could give him a run out in the last friendly.

Why has Wright not played any minutes this pre season? Is he injured or about to be loaned out?

Harrison Myring sounds promising. Be interesting to see how he would perform against better opposition.

Clawed away by Luis Tibbles. I wonder if his nickname is the cat?
