Trialist Wilson Set to Sign
Thursday, 1st Aug 2019 11:35

Town are set to complete the signing of former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson following his trial.

Football Insider has reported that a deal is close and TWTD understands that discussions are well advanced with the player set to undergo a medical today and the move likely to be confirmed either later this afternoon or tomorrow.

Wilson is understood to have been offered a short-term deal until January.

A fortnight ago TWTD revealed that Wilson was training with the Blues squad with a view to winning a contract.

The 30-year-old subsequently made appearances in the friendlies against Colchester, Notts County and Cambridge.

Ex-Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie has also been on trial but Wilson’s impending signing seems certain to end the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old.

Town have been in need of experienced cover at centre-half with Toto Nsiala out for around another three weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up at the Interwetten Cup, while skipper Luke Chambers is suspended from Saturday’s opening game at Burton having been sent off in the 3-2 victory over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of June as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Once the deal is confirmed, Wilson seems certain to make his Town debut alongside youngster Luke Woolfenden - who will be making his second league start for the Blues - at Burton on Saturday.

Actually most Lincoln fans rated him highly but that he was unlucky and stuck behind a proven partnership. Shef Utd fans also rated him and thought he would be outstanding for Lincoln and wished him well. We are signing capable back up at a cost in line with our current situation i.e. L1. I'm comfortable with with this given we've spent the last 2-3 weeks monitoring and having a good look at him.

Folks let's put some real perspective on this.

This guy isn't actually a dud, over 130 appearances across Championship and League One and ok only one full Welsh cap but this does suggest a good degree of experience.

He struggled to get game time in a very good Sheffield United team, and as mentioned above he broke his ankle having moved to a very impressive and improving outfit under the Crowley's at Lincoln who don't have the same budget as us.

I believe Woolfie and Corrie Ndaba are super prospects, given that Chambo and Toto should perform well at this level we only need cover short term until these youngster gradually weened in alongside a more experienced partner. Capped that this guy can also perform at right back and there seems uncertainty about both Josh and Janoi in this role then under the circumstances this seems from a logical perspective a sound signing. If he plays out of his skin and holds his position in the team or provide healthy competition for our youngsters then great by me. In both the Colchester and Cambridge games whilst relatively untested he didn't really put a foot wrong.

DJ27. Assuming we are a club aiming for promotion.
The season is long and hard.
We need quality in our starting 11.
And at the very least a tiny amount of quality in back up positions.

God, if this doesn't smell of the ticket tout not giving the Manager a crumb to work with and papering over the cracks till the 'quality' (ahem) of Chambers and Nsiala come back then I don't know what does.

Essextractor. I have a better idea.
Get all centre backs into a room, and state very clearly....
We have 2 starting positions, and it's upto you to perform to obtain one.
If you don't perform to the standard required, you will be dropped until you prove otherwise.

How many games does Chambers miss with the suspension?

I appreciate the requirement to financially stabilise after relegation.....but would it hurt to have splashed out even just 200k to get better quality. We'll pay for the lack of spending by the end of the season. I was incredibly excited for this Saturday.....now I'm deflated and cant see me snapping out of it. Ggrrrrrrrr

Usual barrel scraping rubbish. Would rather just play skuse at cb. Let's just hope we're the new Newcastle of the 90's and just score more than the opposition.

My god - I wonder if Tim Beners-Lee ever reads the comments on here (and doubtless other forums) and wonders why he bothered.

ITFCsince73 - You can spin facts and figures to suit. In reality he is going to be 4th choice, behind Chambers, Toto and Wolf. So a positive spin is that we have a Welsh international as 4th choice Centre back. Negative spin is we have a Lincoln reject starting for us this Saturday. Depends on whether you're glass half full or empty kind of person. He could have a blinder Saturday and keep having blinders all season and keep his spot which would be great for us.

Today we lose our 2nd favourites for promotion to Pompey.
No surprise there.
The black cats and Pompey want 1 and 2 and won't settle for less, and there summer business backs up there intent.
The problem now for us is there are another 6 teams who want a playoff place minimum.
And their summer business shows there intent.
Norwood aside, our intent upto now shows we'll be happy to stay up.

DJ27. Pompey wanted backup for there striker positions.
So they shelled out approx half a million on Harrison, giving the player a massive wage increase at the same time.
That's why we are no longer promotion favourites.

Easy to criticise and let doubts come to the fore ,but if PL believes he will do a job that's good enough for me AND ought to be the standard others judge by !
Let's give him a real chance ,plenty of support and not rush to condemn .

Portsmouth are now 2nd favourites despite signing one of our 'rejects'. You're arguing against your own arguement! Have you got a brown paper bag?!

Sign players experienced in lower leagues, end up with club in lower leagues. Haven't we been here before?

This looks though very much like a case of having to do this to get a specialist into defence for the weekend, let's hope he can do us a job

Get your wallet out Evans you tight git! Lets be honest this really is a pound land signing. We need a centre half and tbis is all we can get. Hang your head in shame Evans.

We need a CDM as we had Chalobah on loan now we have no competition for Skuse unbelievable when you see how many goals we have shipped with him playing.

With respect Suffolkboy. Lambos a football manager.
I believe a good one at that.
He isn't an actor who's just walked off a Harry Potter set.

I believe Suffolkboy you was one suggesting a month back, that they was right last season to have us down for relegation, and a month back, we was second favourites for promotion.
The bookies are never wrong....
Now you suggest PL has said such and such. And we should go with that?
Just hope PL has his wand at all times. That's my suggestion.

73, your constant reference to anyone who disagrees with you as a "happy clapper" is becoming incredibly boring and frankly, quite offensive. The only thing more tedious on TWTD right now is 81's determination to turn every article into his own agenda.

braveblue added 13:14 - Aug 1
Just don't know how people justify this. Give him a change by all means but cannot say it is anything but a bargain basement Evans pre season yet again. If we concede less than three on Saturday it will be a result!!!!
