Trialist Wilson Set to Sign
Thursday, 1st Aug 2019 11:35

Town are set to complete the signing of former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson following his trial.

Football Insider has reported that a deal is close and TWTD understands that discussions are well advanced with the player set to undergo a medical today and the move likely to be confirmed either later this afternoon or tomorrow.

Wilson is understood to have been offered a short-term deal until January.

A fortnight ago TWTD revealed that Wilson was training with the Blues squad with a view to winning a contract.

The 30-year-old subsequently made appearances in the friendlies against Colchester, Notts County and Cambridge.

Ex-Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie has also been on trial but Wilson’s impending signing seems certain to end the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old.

Town have been in need of experienced cover at centre-half with Toto Nsiala out for around another three weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up at the Interwetten Cup, while skipper Luke Chambers is suspended from Saturday’s opening game at Burton having been sent off in the 3-2 victory over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of June as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Once the deal is confirmed, Wilson seems certain to make his Town debut alongside youngster Luke Woolfenden - who will be making his second league start for the Blues - at Burton on Saturday.

The season has not started and the moaning is as always at the top of the agenda. Let's give Wilson and the team August to see what happens. H broke his ankle at Lincoln and they signed someone that formed a great relationship in a team doing well - nobody seems to mind Rowe coming back from Lincoln. He is likely third or fourth choice and therefore paying a fee would be silly - lets also see the terms if it is a 6 month contract to a year surely it is sensible for a squad player. We are where we are and are cutting our cloth accordingly. As stated before am I overly happy - no, am I an Evans fan - no but I am realistic, who will buy our club and invest - nobody. Let's see the youth given a chance, let's get behind the team and see how we perform, let's hope that the road to recovery has started. After 6 weeks of the season with hopefully Toto and few other injured players returning we might just see a settled team many of whom are our own. Remember Murphy was a reject, Magilton was a reject, Alun Armstrong was a reject at their level they all added to the Town. I for one will support the team with trust and belief in to a new season. I will judge my views on what actually happens over a few games - not on Burton or Sunderland - or more importantly not on last season either. We cannot change the past. Two wins in the first two will not mean promotion and two loses will not mean all is wrong. COYB

DJ27. They are second favourites because that's what the bookmakers of the country think.
Last time out in L1 Harrison scored 16 goals in a average at best side.
Now has the added experience of Champioship football, and now plays for a club who attack attack attack.
Pompey have a bargain in my opinion.
But over last 24 hours Pompey have got gready and signed highly rated Donny forward for 2m +.
No not gready....that want promotion from L1, so are doing what's required.

People got excited over Tilt because of that YouTube clip. The same thing caused seriously inflated expectations of Nolan when he arrived. Edited clips and social media are not reality. Let's give this new signing a chance.

I do recall a lot of negative comments about Matt Pennington last season when his loan signing was announced.......went on to be arguably player of the season!!!!

Suffolkboy. My reference to a happy clapper, is just that, a reference.
If you feel you fit that category, then don't be offended.
No offence intended.

I despare at what is going on behind the scenes at our great club.
In case people have forgotten,we probably had the worst defence in the
clubs history last season, conceding around 75 goals and that was including our most consistent performer in Pennington, who has now departed.
With the loss of Knudsen our defense at least on paper is even worse than last season.
So what do we do buy a mediocre League two reject, that's really going to propel us into the top two.
Surely there's a couple of experienced half decent defenders out there somewhere, better than what we've got, including calamity Chambers.
Why don't we look abroad anymore, there's plenty of bargains in Germany,Belgium,Holland etc.
Over to you Mr Evans, though I'm not holding my breath

Reality of the space and time we now inhabit, and something we all have to accept - or not.

However, whilst perhaps an underwhelming piece of business, we can at the very least welcome him to the fight, and give him our full support whilst he's wearing the shirt.

Saxon. My last post goes to you also.
Wouldn't want you to feel left out.

73, why is it that you now see the bookies as THE authority in who is and isn't getting promoted? You seemed to ignore that fact when they had us in 2nd spot?! One word for you to ponder, Leicester.

Saxon. You couldn't be further from the truth. I disagree with any odds a bookmaker gives.
That's why I took no promotion for Town the day after the Leeds game at 20-1.
I'm fully aware of how our clubs run from top to bottom.

Gforce agree with post but disagree with 'Mr Evans. ' It makes me feel a bit sick when I read that...

Some of you don't understand the way bluearmy_81 does! Can't everyone accept that a significant transfer fee for someone on a contract makes them far better than someone whose contract has run out! Too many people on here just don't get it do they bluearmy_81!

All the people saying give em time, let's see where we are in a couple of months etc, will you turn on Evans if we aren't in the top 5-6 at the end of September-beginning of October? Or will it be Lambert that's the fall guy? Or will vain hope of improvement with no basis rule the day? Just interested...

I'm sure this guy has something to offer, otherwise he wouldn't have passed the trial stage. Those that saw the recent friendlies seem to thing he looked OK.

However. We now have 4 recognised centre backs and they are all right sided players. Whatever happened to trying to get some balance?

For those pointing out he couldn't get in the Lincoln team i'd point out three things-

1. He got injured and didn't get in a winning side
2. Lambo described him as a ball playing centre half. I doubt Lincoln's more direct style suited him.
3. He'll be our 4th choice.

Well, sums it up really. Good luck to the player. Got a real chance to cement a regular place in the team.

We were conceding an average of 2+ goals a game.........and so weve brought in a last minute loan from lower league football and promoted a youngster with little experience(admittedly Ive not seen Woofly play).

Someone please tell me how this is taking a long term, sagacious approach and resolving the problem. Still an absolute joke. I really hope these words are forced down my throat because I cant see how we are going to keep clean sheets for the rest of the team to build upon. Sorry Norwood, youre going to need to score a hat trick each game.

I would have liked us to have gone back in for Curtis Tilt who's contract ran out last month. But we don't know what has gone on behind the scenes we'll never know.
But don't be so negative about Wilson give the man a chance we don't know what happened at Lincoln with him other than what someone's mate told him in Witherspoon's...

Nothing being invested because a. The club loses money. B it will lose 9 million more this year than previous. C budgets are agreed at towards the end of the season, those fees dont go into this years pot PL has said that himself.

Think we have 3 CBs who should be capable at this level plus 1 youngster comming through.

Competition foe Emamuelle is what we need. This guy is Bench fodder most of the season.

Give Wilson a chance. OK history is history - just maybe he might get the Norwood effect in keeping the opposition out.......end of day, not hearing of anyone else in frame and we have good youngsters to play too

Good luck to him but I am not happy with this signing - we need to do better than this in all honesty to promotion is our aim

73 - Harrison is still our 'reject' by your definition. Anyone who is released by a club is a reject in your book, which is utter rubbish. Somebody earlier pointed out all the 'rejects' we've had over the years who've gone on to do well.
Where did you get the odds of 20/1 on us not to be promoted? As you say Bookies never get it wrong, so we can discount Leicester winning the premiership then. I'm actually bored of arguing with you. Anyone who put a bet on us not to be promoted after Leeds game is not an Ipswich fan. You will undoubtedly revel in any defeat we have and i don't wish to converse with 'fans' with that outlook. So i wish you well buddy and i'm hoping you don't win your £20 on your £1 bet.
