Trialist Wilson Set to Sign
Thursday, 1st Aug 2019 11:35

Town are set to complete the signing of former Lincoln City central defender James Wilson following his trial.

Football Insider has reported that a deal is close and TWTD understands that discussions are well advanced with the player set to undergo a medical today and the move likely to be confirmed either later this afternoon or tomorrow.

Wilson is understood to have been offered a short-term deal until January.

A fortnight ago TWTD revealed that Wilson was training with the Blues squad with a view to winning a contract.

The 30-year-old subsequently made appearances in the friendlies against Colchester, Notts County and Cambridge.

Ex-Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie has also been on trial but Wilson’s impending signing seems certain to end the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old.

Town have been in need of experienced cover at centre-half with Toto Nsiala out for around another three weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up at the Interwetten Cup, while skipper Luke Chambers is suspended from Saturday’s opening game at Burton having been sent off in the 3-2 victory over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of June as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Once the deal is confirmed, Wilson seems certain to make his Town debut alongside youngster Luke Woolfenden - who will be making his second league start for the Blues - at Burton on Saturday.

Town turn down chance to take Bale on loan, because he's getting on a bit, rejected by Madrid, played for Wales and oh yes, has a pony tail.
FFS you lot get real, we are currently a 3rd tier club, give the guy a chance.

DJ27. You know nothing about me.
You certainly don't know how I bet. Or how much.
And where have I mentioned reject?
Pompey have a bargain, and I wish Harrison would have stayed.
Obviously the 450k offer was to good to turn down.
You keep pulling my posts, you clearly like to argue.
As for Leicester, that's a once in a lifetime occurrence.

But I'm sure your sensible enough to understand that.

People on here seem to know more about the players than Lambert must all have coaching badges think I'll give the lad a chance first before i join the moaning brigade they need to stay in more and watch Jeremy Kyle.

Linkboy. I think Lambo knows who hes signing
Your quite right. The club supporters know also.
But I think given the chance, he would have taken Harry Kane over Norwood.
He brings in who he can afford.

73 - I know 3 things about you. You've supported Ipswich since '73. You put a bet on Ipswich not to get promoted this year at 20/1, although you've yet to state where you got those odds as they seem ridiculous. And thirdly, you're an incredibly negative person, but that is your prerogative. Listen, i'm sure some of your points will come true others won't, but i hope you get some sort of enjoyment out of going to PR this season, whether that's enjoyment from us winning or taking pleasure from us losing but winning your bet. Good luck buddy!

Hopefully we'll get slightly more mileage out of this one than we did Dawkins.

DJ27. Again loads of presumptions.
My username isn't set in stone.
When relegation was confirmed, we was instantly installed as not only promotion favourites but L1 title favourites.
The odds I received was widespread, it wasnt unique to the one company.
Of course following the club for many years, knowing fall well our current status. It was odds I couldn't resist.
I cant imagine anyone would be more devastated than me regarding our position and knowone wants stability or results more than me. Because I took a bet where some money was to be earned, makes me no more or less a supporter.

Here's a novel thought . How about we give this bloke a chance to play and then judge him . If he gives a Mark Fish performance on Sat fair enough but let's at least give him the opportunity to show what he can do.

Obviously PL isn't getting the 3 players he asked for ! And didn't he say the two Trialists were way off with fitness ?
Desperate times!

Reading all these comments, I wonder if there will be any more transfers in. That would be comedy.

And for the record DJ. I'd happily bin the betting slip at the 1st opportunity.
The slow death of my club is the concern.

I know nothing about the guy at all, does it feel like a world beater signing or a massive re-investment of the faith the season ticket sales which the fans have produced..no

But as soon as he puts on the blue he is a town player and I for one will not be passing any kind of judgement until i have seen him play a few games.

Welcome James I hope you excel in a troublesome position for us and especially play two blinders against your former employers..

73 - Ipswich are currently 1/3 to not be promoted. You are honestly telling me they have come down from 20/1 to 1/3?? since the Leeds game? Sunderland are favs for the league and are currently 1/2 to not be promoted. The odds of 20/1 you're talking about would have meant at some point we would have been about 1/25 to get promoted. You simply did not make or place that bet. All the best buddy!

Feels like a bit of an over reaction in here....Chambo will be solid in this league, Toto too, Wofie needs the space to grow that if we bring in a "steller" (like we could get that at present) CB will block his growth. Like anyone, I love to see us sign players, but last summer we signed lots and look what happened, we now have a clean slate to build

This is a pound shop buy....couldnt command a place in a league two team....not a signing for a promotion pushing team.....Evans really isnt going to spend a penny is he!?!?!? Windfall money, sale of Harrison and massive wage reduction....and Evans cannot lash out 500,000 on a player for a key position...JOKE 🐬

Give him a chance..give me a break...30 yrs old...never played above league one standard and then not a 1st teamer, out on loan at poor clubs...LEAGUE TWO DEFENDER AT BEST....can u imagine poor Lambert picking between this guy and the other trialist...dear oh dear!

Shhh dolphin it's sacrilege to criticise god Evans!!! 🤫 He's got lots of money you know!! Remember god Evans keeps us all in existence just be grateful he let's us exist.

We are signing a player to cover Chambo, so best get a freebie in as they won't get a sniff of a start anyhow.
Reading all this transfer bollox is laughable, ain't fans getting it that we are and always have been a selling club and this applied long before Evans started destroying our club. Sell your assets, buy cheap and hope for the best, that's the Ipswich way, so deal with it!

If Wilson was one of the three permanent additions PL wanted, then the deal would have been done long before now. This late deal to sign a trialist who has been here weeks smacks of Evans failing to do other deals.

I wish the fella well, but signing a player who was paid off by Lincoln and unable to force himself into a League Two side, is uninspiring in my opinion.

14 Departues, Fees, Windfalls and he spends nothing....12,000 tickets sold and promotion pushed promised and he spends nothing.......Lambert begs for 3 signings and we get a Lincoln reserve........JOKE
