Town Confirm Wilson Signing
Friday, 2nd Aug 2019 12:34

Town have confirmed the signing of trialist central defender James Wilson on a short-term deal which runs to January 1st.

A fortnight ago TWTD revealed that Wilson was training with the Blues squad with a view to winning a contract.

The 30-year-old, who has been given the number five shirt, subsequently made appearances in the friendlies against Colchester, Notts County and Cambridge and impressed boss Paul Lambert.

“He's just done really well, James,” he said. “I think he’s a really good footballer, he’s not frightened to go in where it hurts, he's got experience as well in that area. To go with two really young ones [Luke Woolfenden and Corrie Ndaba] would be a big, big ask.”

Ex-Walsall central defender Jon Guthrie has also been on trial but Wilson’s signing seems certain to end the Blues’ interest in the 27-year-old.

Town have been in need of experienced cover at centre-half with Toto Nsiala out for around another three weeks with the hamstring injury he picked up at the Interwetten Cup, while skipper Luke Chambers is suspended from Saturday’s opening game at Burton having been sent off in the 3-2 victory over Leeds on the last day of 2018/19.

Newport-born Wilson, who will know Blues keeper-coach Jimmy Walker from his time at Lincoln, started his career with Bristol City before moving on loan to Brentford and then Cheltenham on loan.

A two-year spell with Oldham between 2014 and 2016 followed before he joined Sheffield United.

However, his two-season stint at Bramall Lane - including their 2016/17 League One promotion campaign - saw him make only a handful of appearances and Wilson, who also operates at right-back, joined Walsall on loan during 2017/18 before making a permanent switch to the Imps in January 2018.

Capped by Wales once at full level in addition to appearances for the U19s and U21s, Wilson’s contract at Lincoln was cancelled by mutual consent at the end of June as he had been unable to command a regular place in the side at Sincil Bank as the Imps carried off the League Two title.

Wilson seems certain to make his Town debut alongside youngster Luke Woolfenden - who will be making his second league start for the Blues - at Burton on Saturday.

Welcome James but reeks of ‘Panic signing’ I’m sorry! Just a realistic! A deal until January? Yet more quick fixes from Evans, if it’s a fix at all!

Fine by me, likely to only play a handful of games. Could just be tomorrow if Lambert goes with Chambers and Woolfenden until Toto is back. Some experience in the dressing room can't be a bad thing

When PL asked what he thought of Wilson, he might just as well replied He’s alright I suppose and will do for now...! My once great club seems to smack me around the head day in day out. Not good vibe! Hope I’m way off the mark

I don't understand the negativity towards this signing. We didn't need a really expensive defender to come in. We just need someone who can fill a gap when needed and happy to be back up. I just pray he brings his A game tomorrow otherwise we might be in trouble.

Sensible insurance. If Toto does not return until November/December (there seemed some doubt as to how long he'd be out), then this is a backup, but maybe the short-term contract won't be renewed. On the other hand, if Wilson does well, then why not renew? Win-win for Town.

Welcome on board. Best of luck - ignore the negativity generated this morning by our appalling press conference. Ashamed to be an ITFC fan today on what should be the most optimistic season eve in years.

Whatever way you look at it, this is poor from the club. We've needed at least one new CB from the end of last season and we've ended up signing a Lincoln reject on the day before the start of the season on a short=term deal.

Clearly PL doesn't rate him otherwise he wouldn't have left it so late to sign him. No wonder he sounded annoyed in his press conference.

Obviously I hope he does well for us but pretty sure the happy clappers won't be so glib if this guy ends up costing us. People should be asking serious questions of Evans' commitment to the club over this.

Let’s be blunt - we have been forced into this short term deal due to Evans failure to land other targets. More short sighted need for a truly abysmal owner.

We have chambers, toto and woolfenden, he's been bought in to make sure we have some experience if needed. I know people complaining but those 4 are fine, think full backs are the issue
