Garbutt: My First Ever Debut Goal

Loanee Luke Garbutt was delighted to grab his first ever debut goal as the Blues began their League One campaign with a 1-0 victory at Burton.

The 26-year-old's 11th-minute strike deflected home to give the Blues an important first win of the season on the opening day.

“It’s nice to get off the mark so early on in the season, and obviously with the backing that we had from the away fans, it was really good to get off the mark and show them what I can do,” he said.

"It’s probably the first debut goal I’ve got in my career, so that’s really pleasing.

“I’m going to base my performances on goals and assists and contributing to the team, so long may it continue.

“And I think with the mentality of trying to win every single game, we’re going to be backed by these great fans.”

Garbutt is playing at left midfield rather than left-back where he has operated for most of his career and is enjoying it.

“I think it gives me more licence to go forward and do the things that I believe I’m good at and in the way we want to play this season it’s going to add to my game more and more,” he added.

The on-loan Everton man was in no doubt it was a deserved victory: “Yes, 100 per cent, I think we controlled the game for most periods.

"They’re going to have a few spells. Woolfy had a good clearance off the line in the last couple of minutes but that was about it really.

"Obviously the keeper [Tomas Holy] nearly messed up but that’s just something that could happen in a game.

"But apart from that, I thought in spells, especially in the second half when we got the ball down and passed it and dominated possession, we could have had a couple more goals, and all in all it was a pretty decent day at the office.”
