Updated: McGreal Confirms Fee Agreed for Vincent-Young
Thursday, 15th Aug 2019 14:05

Colchester United manager John McGreal has confirmed that the U’s have accepted an offer from the Blues for full-back Kane Vincent-Young with the 23-year-old now holding talks with Town regarding personal terms.

What's understood to be a £500,000 move is not expected to be confirmed today with those discussions ongoing and with the player not yet having undergone a medical.

“I got a phone call off [chairman] Robbie [Cowling] last night to say that the clubs have agreed a fee and have given permission for Kane and his representatives to go and have a chat with Ipswich," former Blues centre-half McGreal told the Colchester Gazette.

“Kane’s been great since I’ve been here — he’s been a real mainstay of how I want to do things and he can play either side as full-back.

“He’ll be a real tough one to replace if he goes, there’s no question about that because of how he performs, the athleticism he has and also what type of player and character he is. He has been excellent for us.”

Vincent-Young spent time on trial with Town during pre-season ahead of 2018/19 but wasn't offered a deal and ended up signing a new two-year contract at Colchester.

Last week the one-time Tottenham academy youngster, who also had a spell with Banbury early in his career, was linked with moves to Championship sides Luton and Charlton but their transfer deadline passed with Vincent-Young still at the JobServe Community Stadium. Leagues One and Two are still open for transfer business until September 2nd.

Town reportedly may not be the only contenders for the Camden-born defender’s signature with Sky having claimed that Sunderland could also join the chase, however, unless the situation changes significantly Vincent-Young appears certain to become a Blues player, probably in time to join up with the squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Peterborough.

He would not have been free last year. Compensation would have been due, and with us being a Championship side then it would have almost certainly been 500k if not more.

We are a league lower than we were last year, and he has a lot more experience than he did 12 months ago. Both factors to suggest that he would be a much better fit now than he was then.

Let's just hope that the deal gets done. And then support the lad and give him a chance to impress us on the field.

@ruds - are you forgetting Wilnis? I'll never forget that goal vs Man U in the Prem. Legend.

The fact is we could have signed him before last season but didn't and he had a good season 2018/19 at Colchester and that's why we have gone back in for him but at the expense of 500k (less a small compensation fee) - obviously a few on here don't get that and have checked their brain 'out' before coming on here, hey Dolphinblue!

(less a small compensation fee) if we had signed him in 2018/19 I should say...

I reckon Evans sees this as someone as he can make a bit of money on in a couple of years time......we have a decent track record with full backs. Whilst that may be considered a bit of a cynical view it is also realistic of the position we are in and what we need from time to time. If that does turn out to be true then at least we should of had a really good season or two out of him first.

TimmyH
If we'd got him for free you'd be moaning that Evans doesn't pay anything for players!!!
FFS be consistent!

Absolutely not knocking what you say TimmyH but how does the compensation system work?
I can't really comment on his value either way having never seen him play, but quite clearly there must be a system to value under 24's out of contract and it seems possible that PH didn't consider it good value compared to Donacian.
Really have no idea so it will be interesting to get some form of understanding on this.

All this moaning about a few, if he had signed this time last year on £10k per week wages then by now he would have cost us a total of around £520,000 in wages anyway!

I say let's trust Lambert and see what he can do with him. We have enough cover at CB now if JD is used there behind the others and now it's all about getting a fresh face in up front, height and target man needed for me for Norwood or Jackson to feed off.

Fee not few

I think the compo fee for the ex club comes into rule if the player lets his contract run down or rejects an offer to stay at the club and then fees to his ex club can multiply if the club he is at (Ipswich) gets promoted/or makes a certain amount of appearances...BUT this hasn't been made clear.

Thank you for that TimmyH sounds as though the compensation could have ended up even more than we are paying now then, I guess we'll never know.
anyway, interesting update to the story from the reporting team.

We desperately need a full back, have done for a while. This is good news, such a shame it has taken Evans so long to realise the need for investment in the squad. Good step in right direction, with hopefully more to come.

Centre back more or less covered now if this deal goes through (Donacien). Far more important to get a striker for Norwood to feed from.

The truth is Evans bluff was called out by Lambert! The guy walks a very fine line, fully aware that pleasing Ipswich supporters doesn't require much!

I'm fully behind Lambert for the way he's carried himself, whether he'll rekindle his earlier managerial form remains to be seen! The club is at a pivotal point!

That's more like it, a good start and based on the fact there is a fee involved I assume its one that Lambo actually wants rather than an 'oh s***, we need to sign someone'. Look forward to seeing him play and hopefully deliver.

Good move. Guess - and hope - a lot of the delay in transferdealings was because the transferwindow in the Premier League and Championship was still open. If so - and looking av KVY who was on the wishlist of Luton and Charlton I guess it was that way - the the players PL identified are probably players fron the top two divisions or players who were interestin to clubs in the top two divisions. Feel it didn't have so much to do with funds, more with the clubs position in the "foodchain".

If Lambert rates him and Hirst didn't that's good enough for me.

This is quite incredible. What is happening to our fans??!! If we sign a player on a "free" (no such thing in football these days) then it's all doom and gloom, "get your cheque book out" etc. We then make a very good acquisition for 500k, a nominal fee in today's terms and still it's wrong?! This guy is just the type of player I was hoping we'd sign. Right blend of youth and experience, an attack minded FB with pace enough to get back into position. Looks like the kind of player that has you on the edge of your seat with the ball at his feet. Cheer up folks, you're bringing me down!
