Tottenham Left Winger Georgiou Joins on Loan
Monday, 19th Aug 2019 15:38

Town have completed the signing of Tottenham left winger Anthony Georgiou on loan until January.

Georgiou, who will wear the number 38 shirt, trained with the Blues this morning and the paperwork is expected to be completed in time for him to be in the squad for Tuesday’s game against AFC Wimbledon.

Born in Lewisham of Greek-Cypriot descent, Georgiou came through the Spurs academy and has made one senior sub appearance for Tottenham, as a substitute in a Champions League tie coincidentally against Cypriot side APOEL in September 2017, in addition to being a regular in their U23s.

In addition to joining Town, Georgiou, who was at Saturday's game at Peterborough, has signed a new contract with Spurs, which runs to the summer of 2021.

The 22-year-old, who has won six caps for Cyprus and can also play at left-back, joined Spanish side Levante on loan in January and featured for their B team in the third tier of Spanish football, making 11 appearances and scoring one goal.

Town boss Paul Lambert, who has been looking for two more signings having completed the addition of right-back Kane Vincent-Young this morning, said early in the summer he wasn’t keen to sign too many loan players, however, he admitted last week that he could be forced to make additions of that type.

“You might have to short-term to get where you want to get to sometimes,” he said. “It’s not ideal, I’ve always said it’s not ideal.

“In my opinion, it’s not the right way to try and build your own team, but sometimes it’s dictated. It’s not an ideal scenario.”

Georgiou will provide extra competition on the Town left, potentially allowing Luke Garbutt, who is currently out for a month with a knee injury, to move to left-back to cover first-choice Myles Kenlock if required once he is fit.

Lambert would now appear to need only one more signing before the window closes on September 2nd with a big striker in the mould of Millwall's Tom Elliott - whose move broke down last month - the type of frontman he is after.

In under the radar, love it! Hope he turns out to be a good'un! Don't know much about him but I see he's played one game in the Champions League so should have some pedigree at least. I would imagine if he wasn't any good he would of never made it through the Spurs academy and would of been released before. Fingers crossed Lambert has pulled a rabbit out of the hat with this one!

Those of you complaining about Loan signings seem to have forgotten, Lawrence, Fraser, Celina Williams and Connelly. I'm sure we had some other successful loans. In fact whilst on loan Bullard won POTY.

Warm welcome - you're joining a great club, with outstanding supporters who will be right behind you from the off. Hopefully this loan will be mutually beneficial - great opportunity for you to play regularly, show us your quality, build your career. We get some extra strength and quality, help the lads make a serious challenge to get back to where we should be and, as a bit of bonus, inject a bit of excitement for us all to enjoy! It's a win-win deal folks.

Assume he can't play in the leasing.com trophy against them then?

Starting to see the type of team Lambert wants to build in the long term. It will certainly be exciting to watch. If the team can cut out the unforced errors, it will fly.

Like the new right back signing. Never heard of this lad but looking forward to seeing him play. Good luck to both.

Still desperate for a centre back , Woolfy cant do it on his own. Maybe a forward as well. Jacksons performances have improved this season but his goal scoring record for Town is atrocious and, ultimately, thats what hes employed to do.....stick in the net.

If this lad is anything like the other Spurs loanees that we have had, he will be half decent. A good addition methinks. Shame it is only til January.

Not at all keen on loans as completely agree with Lamberts philosophy of building a team rather than look short term only. But with Evans presumably failing to do the permanent addition PL had targeted, getting a premier league loan in is possibly better than nothing at all. Time will tell, but good luck to him.

Quality signing by the sound of things who should tear up L1. Two versatile wide players in today and the teams looks like it shaping up nice. Even a ‘big👍up' from our resident poster jas0999, probably the most vocal ‘anti loanees' on here. Alls good, looking forward to tomorrow, need to get wins to help shape our season.

Tottenham mate thinks a good player and said he could see him being LB long term. Interesting to see where we play him.

Agree loans not ideal but you never know . Magilton came on loan originally .
Positive reports it seems on this guy . Imo we still need another striker and a centre back though .

It's like Mick McCarthy never left. Out of the cup, short term loan signings, no permanent signings, old favorites first on the team sheet, and a month into the season no sign of a settled side.

Tiptreeblue.... what on earth are you on about?🤔🤔🤔
I am a town fan and have been all of my life, from Sir Bobby years onwards.
What I put was a joke with refence to when Bart was first linked to go to Millwall!

Excellent news, just what we need to balance the flanks. Play him and let edwards fight with Rowe for the right

Really positive, we only have two loans by my reckoning , which is a massive improvement on recent years. One more signing please. And hopefully by the New Year we'll have blooded some more youth prospects in the EFL Trophy, and they'll be ready and able...
