ITFC Sweden Donate £235 to Beattie Statue Campaign
Tuesday, 20th Aug 2019 14:27

ITFC Sweden and its members have donated £235 to The Beat Goes On, the campaign raising funds for a statue of Blues legend Kevin Beattie.

Chairman Niklas Nygåds says Beattie, who died in September last year aged 64, was someone the Swedish Blues got to know well over the years on their visits to Portman Road.

“ITFC Sweden as a supporters club decided to donate £100 for the cause,” he said. “We also asked our members if they would like to contribute, and so they did and we ended up with £235 for the campaign.

“Kevin has had a special place in our hearts, especially after meeting him at different events and not least on Life's a Pitch before Saturday games at our various members’ trips.

“He was always keen on telling us about his time in Sweden, which was always fun to talk about.

“Every time we met him, he would speak a few words in Swedish as well. Let's say his Swedish vocabulary was rather limited!

“He played for Sandviken, which is actually only 45 minutes from where I live. If only I had known at the time that a former Ipswich player was playing so close!

“We hope our small contribution will help the Kevin Beattie statue come true. Such a fantastic footballer and lovely man.

“May he rest in peace and the statue forever become a symbol of his greatness on the pitch.”

Led by the EADT and Ipswich Star in conjunction with BBC Radio Suffolk and TWTD, The Beat Goes On was launched on December 18th last year on what would have been Beattie’s 65th birthday.

The aim was to £110,000, with more than £75,000 now pledged in cash, while MC Contracts and Ridgeons are donating the plinth in kind. The target is now only £5,000 away.

The next fundraising event is a Proper Golf Day featuring Town legends at Hintlesham Hall on Friday 13th September with tickets available from the Greshams Ipswich website.

You can make a donation online via the Go Fund Me page or send a cheque made payable to ‘The Beat Goes On’ to Kevin Beattie Statue Appeal, EADT, Portman House, 120 Princes Street, Ipswich, IP1 1RS.

There are also collection buckets at reception at the EADT’s offices and at BBC Radio Suffolk.

Puh! In the first sentence I read that Niklas Nygårds died last year aged 64 (having met him last year, he must have really aged well, was my first thought). Well done, fellow Swedish supporters!
