Wark: Just Like One of Mine!
Monday, 2nd Sep 2019 06:00

Blues legend John Wark felt Flynn Downes scored a goal reminiscent of many of his during his illustrious playing career.

Downes arrived late in the box in a manner familiar to Town supporters as he headed home Kayden Jackson’s pinpoint ball from the right following a fast-flowing move to seal Saturday's 3-0 victory over Shrewsbury.

"That goal reminded me of many of my own,” Wark enthused after the match havin congratulated Downes as he spoke to the media in the tunnel.

“It was the way the lads moved it from one end of the pitch to the other and he was so quick to spot what was on.

“He timed his run to perfection and Kayden did brilliantly to look up and see what was on. A great team goal.”

Wark, 62, remains a regular at Portman Road on matchdays working in a corporate lounge.

John Wark....... now there was a player. Over 30goals from midfield , in ONE season!

I saw John Wark make his debut as a 17 year old, out of position in central defence against the best team in the country. Nowadays he'd be farmed out on loan having seen a series of self-harming loans and short term duds lined up in his position. And therein lies the problem.

Flynn is very good with his head, this time though it benefitted the team!

What a player Walk was
Flynn has learnt a lot from playing alongside Skuse
But he could learn a lot more from a chat with the great man and that goal had his stamp on it
A nightmere to defend against and helps your strikers so much to have another angle of attack
I'm lucky enough to still remember "he's here he"s there he's every....."
Thanks PL for giving us our club back

Just like the 3rd goal by Warky at Highbury 1978 FA Cup semi v WBA . Great to see he is still involved like so many from that era !!

ElephantintheRoom, I was at that game, spot on with the rest of your post. That is why the great man made so few signings, because he gave the youngsters self belief by showing confidence in them at a time when they got a lot less protection from the referee than they get now. Even Jackson looks like he needed some confidence boosting at 23 to see the best of him.

Brilliant to still have Warky and some of the legends from the club's golden era around.
I was very pleased when PL invited them in for a catch-up several months ago. I felt that was a very encouraging sign in relation to PL and an acknowledgement of the value of those great players to the club and supporters. I have been further excited by the way that PL has unified everyone and that the players are really getting into stride long may it continue.....

Greatest Town player I've been lucky enough to see. Even once the legs had slowed his reading of the game was immaculate. A proper Legend.

Warky was awesome. The defenders never knew where he was and he was always making late runs and finding space in the box. I believe his best season was 38 goals and that was at the highest level.

Totally agree. I know we cant keep churning out statues left, right n centre.......but John Wark is absolutely deserving of one. My favourite Ipswich player of all time, a hugely underrated player. Could play any position, could score goals form any position. Played and scored in a fantastic World Cup full of fellow stars. In a hollywood film with fellow stars. Even when he moved to centre back, he still marked Shearer out of the game. I remember when we were losing 6-0 to utd with half an hour to go and he just smiled....because he had seen it all...been there....done that...and sometimes you just get days like that.....it was still only worth 3 points(and we beat them in the corresponding fixture).

Other favourites include - Alan Brazil, Super Matty Holland, Bambam Naylor, Terry Butcher, Marcus Stewart, Martin Rolls Reuser, Jason Dozzell, Mick Mills, Eric Gates, Big Tony Mowbray(how tall is he...17 foot apparently) and others.

Shall stop reminiscing, seems er may have some glory days ahead!

I was lucky enough to see warky in all 3 of his Ipswich spells.

For me, the greatest ever Ipswich player ( unfortunately too young to have seen the Beat play )

My favourite memory was in his third spell when we beat the then champions Leeds 4-2.

Scoring two then going nose to nose with a very young Phil Whelan for bottling a header from a Leeds corner.

My earliest memory was him swinging from the cross bar putting us 2-1 up against West Bromwich at Portman road. My first ever game. We went on to lose 4-3.

1983/84?

Hoping someone on this site can give me the correct year.

I can't remember if I was 7 or 8 😁

Why do you think Downes and Wolfy are now in the 1st team and Dozzer isn't? Loaned out and played a full season. Its nothing new, SBR did thd same with Alan Brazil in 1978.

Wow, you did well to dig that out, highly unusual at the time & not the norm was it!
Beattie, Butcher, Osman, Wark, Burley, Mills........the list goes on.
The point is that you don't need to send young players out on loan to play week in week out you just need a manager with the courage to play them, with big squads it's an easy option to make the younster the fall guy.

Did any of Knudsen's end up as badly for us as the Shrewsbury long throw into the box that started the move leading up to the goal?
