Keane Reignites Walters Spat
Thursday, 5th Sep 2019 13:55

Former Blues boss Roy Keane has reignited his long-running spat with his ex-Town skipper Jon Walters.

The pair famously fell out and almost came to blows during their time together at Portman Road in 2010, the former Manchester United man having accused Walters of trying to engineer a move away from the Blues. He stripped Walters of the captaincy and left him out of the side before the striker was eventually sold to Stoke City.

The duo were eventually reunited when Keane was appointed assistant manager of the Republic of Ireland but with relations remaining strained, a Whatsapp voice message outlining the details of a row involving them and Harry Arter having been leaked in September last year.

Speaking at the Cadbury's Off The Ball roadshow in Dublin, Keane took aim at several players among them Walters, even making reference to the Birkenhead-born forward’s TV interview earlier this year in which he talked about his daughter’s scoliosis and the deaths of his mother when he was a child and more recently his older brother and unborn child.

"He talks a good game," Keane said of Walters. "Imagine if he'd won a trophy. He goes on the TV about how he was harshly treated by me. He's crying on the TV about his family situation.

“You know, how about lying low for a while, taking it easy. Have a look at his medals? Wouldn’t take long.

“Ironically two or three years ago when his career was coming to the end, he went on loan, he went to Ipswich on loan. I was laughing my head off.

"We got beaten by Wales. Jon played. Jon didn't have a good game. Wardy played, he didn't have a good game. They need to go back see how bad they were.”

Ireland lost that match 4-1 to Wales in Cardiff in the UEFA Nations League and it turned out to be Walters’s final international before he retired in March due to injury.

Keane was reminded that Walters scored a decent number of goals, 14, in his 54 games for Ireland but said: "How many years ago is that? How long is he going to live off that? A certain player [Jason McAteer] scored against Holland and he still is.”

Walters, who spent a brief spell back at Portman Road on loan from Burnley last season before succumbing to injury, responded to Keane’s latest comments via a Twitter selfie.

For a 48 year old man, Roy Keane has a lot of growing up to do.

This Roy Keane character; he's not a very nice man.
Sacked by Ireland because he wasn't doing very well. League clubs not exactly queuing up to give him a job.

What a bitter little man. I think he realises that the only way he is going to get into the limelight for a few minutes nowadays is by talking trash to the media. No clubs or national teams would want this desease of a manager around their squads.

Keane hasn't changed. Still a spiteful big mouthed thug. How we miss you at Portman Road.

Once a thug always a thug. I didn't like him as a player I detested him as our manager and now we all know what a sad individual he has become.

JW doesn't come across great when talking about all the Keane stuff and in general at times on his new show, but this bloke takes coming across badly to another level.

With how obsessed Keane is about winning and 'trophies', I'm surprised he can even show his face or talk in public considering what he's achieved in the last 10 years.

Also, Walters came on loan two or three years ago? Does he mean the time he came on loan last season, pretty much exactly one year ago? Sober up Roy.

He's not a big headed, arrogant t#€t either. Thank god Keane has gone, he forgets to say anything about what a useless manager he is.

Sneering sideways comment about Ipswich.
“Ironically two or three years ago when his career was coming to the end, he went on loan, he went to Ipswich on loan. I was laughing my head off."
Hard not to despise a man who's reaction to the adversity of others is to laugh his head off.
No doubt he is very popular somewhere with loads of really good mates, or perhaps not.

Walters is a solid pro who did well for us over a period, a difficult period. He is not a born and bred Town fan such as myself with 50 years in the tank supporting this club. I don't know much about this but even with my Town history I think I might have looked for a way out of the Club with Keane in charge, so won't find me holding that against Walters! Bitterness is a genuine mental weakness and Keane suffers badly from it.

Well I know who's side I'm on. Bloke is a complete moron.
Whether you like someone or not there's no need to make comments about peoples family .
Plus he was a hugely successful player but he has a sh*t record in management so maybe he should take a back seat for a bit .

Do we and should we really care about this spate? It is ridiculed ex-manager re-hashing an old confrontation with an ex-player, I for one couldn't care less.

Having all the medals under the sun doesn't compensate for being a total moron. And he got his European Cup medal without even kicking a ball in the final. And that Utd team didn't have that much stiff competition for a while, they only had to beat the likes of Newcastle some seasons. The Premier League is infinitely harder to win now. Take last season. Liverpool only managed 2nd place and yet they still scored more points than any Utd team under Fergie ever managed in a season. If Keane had of played in the same teams as John Walters I doubt he'd have any medals to show for his career either! When they were on a level playing field (playing for Ireland) Walters managed to find the net more often than Keane managed.

Let's keep it simple, Walter's will aways be welcomed back at Ipswich, and Keane will not.

And if Walters is such a nobody why does Keane feel the need to keep on banging on about him so much?
