Barton: Probably as Bad as a Group of Players as Ipswich Have Had in a Long Time
Saturday, 5th Oct 2019 10:45

Fleetwood manager Joey Barton believes the current Town squad are “probably as bad as a group of players as Ipswich have had in a long time” even if they win League One this season and has questioned whether the Blues' start to the season is based "on solid foundations".

Top-of-the-table Town, unbeaten in their first 10 league games this season plus the win against Leeds on the final day of the last campaign, take on Barton’s third-placed Cod Army at Highbury this afternoon in the first ever game between the two teams.

“To be fair to them they’ve made a really great start,” Barton told the Blackpool Gazette. “The reality of it is, my players, Fleetwood players, right now, arguably, are in the landscape of becoming the best Fleetwood Town team.

“Where, no disrespect to the Ipswich players, if they don’t win the league this year, or even if they do win the league, they’re probably as bad as a group of players as Ipswich have had in a long time. That’s the reality.

“You can see them doing the wave to the crowd after games and the stuff you would worry about them doing 10 games in.

“Do you have the confidence after losing virtually every week for a long period last season?

“A change around of players, players stepping up from League Two into League One, players dropping down the leagues.

“Is it built on solid foundations? I suppose we will find that out on Saturday, because you have a side in Fleetwood Town who are upwardly mobile in terms of momentum.

“When we took over here this was a club fighting off relegation. That is no longer the culture or the mindset of the building.”

Barton also confirmed that he was keen to sign James Norwood, who joined the Blues after leaving Tranmere in the close season.

“We tracked James Norwood, tracked him for a while, and thought we had a legitimate shot at getting him,” the one-time England international added.

“Then, he scores loads of goals in League Two last season and then you hear Ipswich are in for him, as they’re coming down.

“We’re kind of like: ‘OK, we might have £2,500-£3,000, for you’ and then Ipswich come in and give him between £8,000 and £10,000.
“The January before you see Sunderland pay £3.5 million for Will Grigg and probably up north of £10,000 a week.

“It’s remaining clear in your objectives that we can’t compete with these teams financially, so we’ve got to be a lot smarter in what we do. In many ways it’s going to be David versus Goliath.”

Well, that's Paul Lambert's team talk pretty well sorted.

Norwood hat-trick just to show him what he missed out on. Why would Nors want to play in front of 2 700 when he can play in front of 20k? Hope the 'terrible' players see this!

He's such a childish troll. If he thinks this group of players is bad he obviously didn't see us last year!

We have more than enough momentum thank you, and probably as many fans as them today. We haven't spent anything like £3.5m on a player so talking about Sunderland is just irrelevant.

Yes we've won a few games by the odd goal and we've not played that many of the stronger clubs yet but we're unbeaten, we're scoring enough, we're hardly letting any in, our away record is as good as their home record, we've still got new players bedding in, and we're keeping our squad fresh with rotation. Our 12th man is happier and more helpful than at any time in at least a decade. Ten games in and top of the table. I don't think we'll worry about little Joey Barton. And neither will Paul Lambert.

You ain't no manager bruv...

I imagine this is a rather pathetic attempt at "mind games": as if anyone with any sense ever took notice of these anyway.

Cynical mind games designed to ruffle our boys' feathers. This tool wants to rile us into making mistakes by taking the field fired up. I suspect PL and Chambers, Skuse and co are much too wily for that. In fact the only player to worry about might he Flynn Downes. Barton is enough of a scumbag to give instructions to target Flynn.

Funny that, cos Joey Barton is a bad a manager as Fleetwood Town have had in a long time

(or any other club, for that matter)

There's absolutely no way we're paying Norwood 8-10k a week

Rather stating the obvious, no? When was the last time we were in the third tier? Obviously it's the worst squad of players in a long time, but it just so happens it's top of the league and above your lot.

Regardless of what you think he's doing this for, it is also simply untrue. I'd rate this squad as the best we have had in a good few years, maybe since the nearly-promotes team of a few years ago (and even then we were playing Jay Tabb)

We've finally solved the RB problem, good promising youngsters on every part of the pitch, and perhaps most importantly, the beginnings of a spirit and confidence that you can't buy.

Barton is probably the worst player to have played in the premier league, a poor mans Roy keane. Lets put 5 past them today so we can silence this gobby wanna be hardman

1/10 for trolling.

Tries to undermine the player's confidence, but just comes across as desperate and trying too hard.

Needs to look at Bluefish for better material.

Well that is the team talk done! It's fired me up and I am not playing, but I will be in the stand with the rest of the travelling faithful.

Let's give this fleetwood team a right good going over! I expect they will try to rough us, didn't do the Argie baggies any good this morning!

In one sentence he certainly manages to motivate our team today. He' s clearly comparing our team today to great teams of our past and doesn't know anything of oof Town of this season.

@Ihatecanaries I thought Paul McShane was worse tbf to Barton.

Well even if we do have a collective bad group of players that we've had in a long time they're currently turning things around in this league with a few good new additions added in the summer and look so far consistently better than anything in this league - anyway wouldn't believe anything that spews out of Barton's mouth, surprised he's allowed to be a manager with his past.

And there we have a manager (loose terminology) who is the type that will destroy the name of the game. I am sure glad we have got a class proven manager who knows when and where respect are due. Sadly for Fleetwood they have to put up with a disrespectful soap star wannabe.

When I read this I felt pleased that our Manager is Paul Lambert. Barton's comments just show a lack of professionalism, integrity and dignity. I hope Town put on a good display today and come away with a win. To all the fans travelling...... have a great time and thank you in advance for your fantastic support.
