Rotherham Boss Wouldn't Be Surprised If Ward Rejoined Town
Friday, 18th Oct 2019 17:03

Rotherham boss Paul Warne says he wouldn’t be surprised if Town re-signed Grant Ward once the midfielder is fit enough to return to action.

Ward, who Warne has spoken to about a return to the Millers, with whom he had a spell on loan in 2015/16, is still undergoing his rehab having suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury on Boxing Day.

The 24-year-old was released by the Blues at the end of last season but has remained at Town as clubs are obliged to get players fit before they depart.

“I did speak to Wardy a few weeks ago, just touching base with him to see where he’s at,” Warne told the Rotherham Advertiser.

“If he does reach out to me – because I don’t want to hassle him like a stalker – and say he’d consider coming here or wants to have a chat, I’d definitely meet him. One hundred per cent.

“Whether I’d have the funds to do anything, I’d have to green light that with the chairman. If it’s something I could do, I would be keen on doing it, yeah.”

Ward was reportedly close to signing for the Millers in the summer but in the end preferred to keep his options open.

“I try to stay away from signing players who have been here before,” Warne added.

“Grant is a little bit different in that he was very young when he first came here.

“He’s coming through a bad injury, but then a couple of the lads I signed in the summer have been through that as well. He’s now running on the grass.

“He still hasn’t got anything. I wouldn’t be surprised if, when he’s fit, Ipswich re-engage and re-sign him. That’s sort of what I get a feel of.”

Ward made 75 starts and 23 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring eight goals, having signed from Tottenham in the summer of 2016, and famously netted a hat-trick on his debut in the 4-2 victory over Barnsley at Portman Road.

Elsewhere, former Blues midfielder Paul Anderson, 31, has rejoined his former club Northampton having left Plymouth after a short spell in the summer.

I put a thread up about this a few weeks back, is he better than our wide options at the moment?

No thanks , he had loads of time to shine here but after such a bright start he failed to impress .
Time to move on . He needs a fresh start somewhere else

I wasn't a Ward fan towards the end and was please we didn't offer him a new contract, but his first few months he did look attacking and potentially a good player, but that looked like it was trained out of him by MM. He could potentially be a completely different player to what we saw, if he trained under Lambert 's backroom staff. But the only person that would know that is Lambert himself. So I don't mind if we don't give him another contract, but if we did I would believe that Lambert sees something in him and can make him into something that we all thought he could be after that Barnsley game. He shot on sight in that game, but after a few weeks training with MM, he looks like he was always scared to shoot. Which was such a shame.

Hopefully not and equally not interested in what Budgie fan Warne has to say!

I'd say when he's fit they can have him.

Don't think he would improve the team one bit he is a bench warmer at best we have much better options already. Let him go somewhere else

Agree with Bluenc.... think under MM he was told to concentrate more on defending not attacking after his blistering start, he's still young enough at 24, and would be worth a contract to the end of the season when fit and take it from there.

No thanks, didn't cut it in the Championship and still probably too lightweight at this level.

Mick liked him because he ran around a lot thus bulking up the midfield. But having wingers that haven't the speed or guile to beat their man, or, as in Edward's case, rarely deliver a telling cross after having done that is a gloomy piece in the jigsaw of our long demise. Real wingers are hard to come by, and Wardy is not one of them. I think that his adaptability will give him a decent career somewhere, but, by the same token, not a great one.

He's a player with ability but for some reason unable to string a run of good performances together and needs to up his work rate to hold down a regular place in the team. As we are over loaded with midfield players think it is best if he moved on.

Not worth a mention, we have Lancaster coming back.

As someone said
We haven't seen him play for a positive manager yet, under MM it was all about match the opponents up and stop them playing.
Under a manager that believes in the team he may shine.
Worth a short term contract imo.

Guys he was awesome in his first few games and shows what he can do then a bit like Maitland niles and numerous other players he had to change his game to suit micks more defensive first philosophy personally I think he'd do a good job under lambert with more scope to attack. You don't get a hat tick in the championship against anyone unless you're decent!

To my mind he is a quality player who would be an asset to many Championship squads.

The trouble is that we have a plethora of options in midfield, with Bishop, Nydam and Lankester to return.
