Norris Handed Blues League Debut as Lambert Makes Five Changes at Southend
Saturday, 26th Oct 2019 14:14

Town boss Paul Lambert has made five changes for this afternoon’s game at Southend, including handing Will Norris his Blues league debut in goal, while Flynn Downes and James Norwood both return to the XI.

Tomas Holy drops to the bench, while Luke Woolfenden is back at the centre of the defence alongside skipper Luke Chambers in a 4-4-2 system. Kane Vincent-Young and Luke Garbutt are the full-backs.

Flynn Downes is back in midfield after his hip injury alongside Cole Skuse with Gwion Edwards on the left and Danny Rowe on the right.

James Norwood is back up front alongside Kayden Jackson. In addition to Holy, James Wilson, Jon Nolan, Emyr Huws and Will Keane all move to the bench.

For Southend, who make three changes from the team which lost 7-1 at home to Doncaster in midweek, ex-Blues midfielder Luke Hyam is on the bench, while one-time acadely schoolboy Nathan Ralph starts.

Southend: Oxley, Bwomono, Kiernan, Shaughnessy, Ralph, Dieng, Milligan, Hutchinson, Cox, Hopper, Humphrys. Subs: Bishop, Hyam, Goodship, Demetriou, Taylor, Acquah, Rush.

Town: Norris, Vincent-Young, Woolfenden, Chambers (c), Garbutt, Skuse, Downes, Rowe, Edwards, Norwood, Jackson. Subs: Holy, Wilson, Nolan, Judge, Georgiou, Huws, Keane. Referee: Andy Davies (Hampshire).

Certainly like the look of the defence and the strikers are more than capable of scoring. But, is the midfield creative enough? Rowe and Edwards haven't been great this season.

Harsh on Holy, I'm a bit worried about Garbutt at LB too. Hope I'm wrong and we can get a comfortable win. Coyb

Interesting selection
Glad to see 4-4-2 (we hope) with Downes back and Norwood selected although unsure what Holy has done wrong.
This should be strong enough against a low confidence side, but who will be buoyed by the arrival of Campbell, Cole and Hreidersson.
Obviously squad rotation does not extend to Chambers and Skuse.

Can't understand why Holy has been dropped.

4-4-2......fair enough.
Woolfy, Downes and Norwood in.....nice.
Edwards..........gonna have to play seriously well (or at least have a decent game for once) to change my mind about him
Come on Ipswich!!

I would have started Georgiou, but other than that I like the look of the team

Seems harsh on Holy, but then if you're not giving Norris a go after two defeats in a row then when will you? See what we get!

Attacking overlapping full backs - I think we'll have more success with this system. Would've preferred only one of Skuse / Downes, partnered with Huws / Nolan.

And slightly Harsh on Holy, Norris seems no better than him based on his cup appearances.

Very harsh on holy, would have preferred the Tottenham guy to Edwards he's either hot or cold let's hope Edwards is hot today, happy he's pushed up he isn't a wing back

Harsh on Holy, squad rotation doesnt include Chambers or skuse. And for the life of me i dont get the decision to start Edwards, who was very average(being kind) as opposed to Georgiou who did well when he came on. Really feel Georgiou would enjoy a lot of the ball and really wreak havoc on defenders with very little in the way of confidence!

A must win game, no excuses!

Wouldn't have Edwards anywhere near starting imo
He was extremely poor away at Accrington .

I know he played out of position a little but has not really impressed

Rowe starting again after the game against Rotherham!?... a few weeks ago Holy was the 'man' so find that a bit strange too, but glad to see Downes back.

Agree with majority regarding Holy, not sure if Rowe has done enough to earn his place. Other than that I think it's a good line up. Hope so, need a win today and preferably a comfortable confidence inducing one at that!

I hope HYAM remembers where he came from if he gets on the field. Watch your shins boys! COYB.

"Squad rotation doesn't apply to Skuse". Skuse is in for a very good reason - he has been one of our more consistent midfielders.

Bert. Skuse at fault for both goals on Wednesday. But never gets rested.

Getting very annoyed by Lambert's squad rotation. One player who should be dropped is Chambers. He's already cost us a number of points this season. Wolfenden should be one of the first on the team sheet, the best central defender we have, I hope in January there is a clear out of players mainly signed by Hurst. Many are not good enough even for League 2. Is Norwood actually good enough at this level? Why keep changing a team? Still have faith but 2 matches against Doncaster where we we were very lucky not to lose and the abysmal performance against Rotheram really gall me. I still think when Evans took over & sacked Jim McG was a huge mistake, we were doing OK. It's just gone downhill from then.

Holy is paying the penalty, quite rightly, for failing to deal with the cross which lead to the first goal at Accrington and allowing the first goal through his legs on Wednesday. For a big man he is not strong enough when the ball is crossed in to the box.
