Lambert: Referees' Chief Jones Can't Believe Goal Was Chalked Off
Friday, 29th Nov 2019 15:19

Town boss Paul Lambert says referees’ chief Mike Jones agreed that the Blues’ goal against Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday shouldn’t have been ruled out and that the Chairboys’ penalty was outside the area.

After Tuesday's match, which ended 0-0, Lambert said he planned to call Jones, the national group director of the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) regarding referee Alan Young’s disastrous display.

Cambridgeshire-based official Young ruled out what should have been a Curtis Thompson own goal -after consulting with his assistant Aaron Farmer once the players were already lined-up for the restart - gave the visitors their spotkick - which was ultimately saved by Tomas Holy - when the challenge had been outside the box, having turned down an earlier Town penalty claim when Jon Nolan’s shot struck Joe Jacobson on the hand and booked 11 players.

Asked whether he’d had a word with striker James Norwood regarding his yellow card for dissent following the goal being disallowed - his fifth caution of the season meaning the striker will miss the League One game at Coventry a week on Saturday - as it was needless, Lambert responded: “So was the decision!

“Listen, I’ve spoken to Mike Jones and he can’t believe it as well how the goal was chalked off, it should never have been chalked off. It was never a penalty because it was outside the box.

“With James, it happens with the emotion of the game, you get caught in the emotion of the game.”

Can't blame Norwood. If it was me I'd have probably been banned for the season after what I had to say about the decision in the heat of the moment.

Alan Young and Aaron Farmer need to be investigated. Farmer is from Colchester and actually worked for Col U previously. He was smirking at the crowd at the start of the second half when he was checking the goal net. That standard of officiating is unacceptable at any level but for a hugely important top of the table game it was awful. They got every big decision wrong. And completely lost control of the game which is reflected by the fact he booked 11 players!

Haven't checked where they are officiating tomorrow (hopefully nobody because they should be banned for a few weeks) but god help whoever they screw over next. We should never have them in charge of an Ipswich game again.

People seem to be forgetting the foul from Donacien in the build up to the penalty was a second booking and Chambo was lucky to stay on as he was last man for the pull back. Wycombe also could've had another pen when Garbutt handballed from a cross in the box. He also missed the most blatant corner to Wycombe ever when a shot was blocked behind. The ref was awful for both teams and should be taken off EFL games. Draw was a fair result although would've been interesting to see how the game unfolded had our perfectly good goal not been ruled out.

It would be very good ,and courageous but not before time, if the PGMO actually publicly described what action they took and take over such terrible performances .
The number of cards issued alone illustrates the man in the middle either lost control.or never established control .
It also immediately calls in to question the integrity and validity of his all round performance ,and that of his assisting team !
Whilst I can quite see there is a need to protect officials from improper criticism and worse ,equally there is patently a real need for everybody in the game ,including supporters to be treated to a clear and proper and mature public explanation of how and why decisions were arrived at ,and a genuine apology from such as the PGMO when this sort of debacle occurs !
I do not think a humiliation is called for ,but ,as in the workplace, a review by those involved and some public acknowledgement ought to be the route to take .
The game is over and done now : it won't be the only one throughout the leagues where inadequacy causes frustration ,but just maybe this indicates the need for the PGMO to improve themselves ,their own management and importantly the attention to encouraging and educating enough and more people to become Game Officials .I wonder if the PGMO have enough monetary support to do all they'd like to do ,and / or whether they need some fresh blood to reinvigorate their body and institute a fresh approach ?
MUCH remains to be done , the politics in the game still play an often unwanted role but I shall hope for improvement !

ashleylewis10..........Good points raised , however you have also pointed out two or three glaring mistakes which anybody could see....hence why he should not be a ref....A draw was NOT fair result imo......COYB..ITID

Ashley, it's not a pen against Garbutt as his arm is by his side, the Wycombe guy has his arm up, that is the difference. Red card for Chambers? Not for me, Donacien's first yellow was a joke but agree once on a yellow should have been sent off.

The impact of a red card 5 mins from time is negligible compared to a pen not given or (and) a goal wrongly disallowed.

That ref cost us 2 points you will never convince me otherwise

So it's about time with all this technology that a so called decision should / could Bev reverses when it's found to be completely incorrect. Town should have all 3 points !

We still didn't have a single shot on target throughout the whole match. That's why we didn't win not because the officials were $hite.

Got to be honest both these teams looked mediocre the other night . Don't normally criticise officials ive been watching town for 55 years now and these are the worst ive experienced since Clive Thomas. Firstly the disallowed goal was bad enough but when the Wycombe player went down ive never seen a referee move so fast to award a penalty without consulting the linesman to see if it was in the box. If we are going to get promoted we need to improve considerably otherwise we will start to slip down the table.

Ashley Lewis I'll agree with Donacien however their centre half had a yellow earlier in the game then kicked the ball away. The ref was going to his pocket then realised he'd already booked him so put it away again. You forgot that one mate. The handballs were completely different one had his hand by his side the other outstretched.

Ashleylewis whilst i agree the ref was awful for both teams i dont agree that a draw was a fair result, far from it! Many games this season we have come out on top in games we havent been convincing in, not once this season have we dominated a game, but we did dominate against a very poor Wickham side who were waisting time on 10 mins and had no intention in making it a contest! To say a draw was a fair result is a ridiculous statement, by that reckoning had our goal been allowed to stand you would say an unjust and lucky victory for town? Our final third product was not great Tuesday night, none the less we deserved the 3 points, 100%, wickham on the other hand deserved nothing, they wont be in the mix come may!

If you have nothing to do this afternoon, why not pop along to Green Meadow where our linesman friend from Tuesday evening, Aaron Farmer, is the referee for Stowmarket Town's game. Even this level may be too much for someone with such limited knowledge of the rules. A chance for still angry ITFC fans to get things off their chest!!!

Such is the spontanious decision of Referees, who have a very difficult time without the Benefit of VAR and istsmassive Costs. It evens itself out over the Season. Wycombe can buy Promotion but it doesnt hide tha fact that they are a lesser light without the massive support of a big fish like the Tractor Boyz. Swings and roud abouts will mean that we win the next two games in quick succession.
