Peterborough United 1-1 Ipswich Town (5-6 on Pens) - Match Report
Wednesday, 4th Dec 2019 21:49

Barry Cotter celebrated his 21st birthday by netting the decisive penalty as the Blues beat Peterborough 6-5 from the spot after a 1-1 draw at London Road in the second round of the Leasing.com Trophy. Idris El Mizouni’s first senior goal saw Town into the lead in the 23rd minute but Ricky-Jade Jones levelled for Peterborough 10 minutes later.

Keeper Adam Przybek and central defender Alex Henderson were handed their debuts and Cotter returned to first-team action for the first time since April 2018 as manager Paul Lambert named his usual much-changed side. No one who was in the XI at Coventry on Sunday is included in the 18.

Wales U21 international keeper Przybek, 19, joined the Blues in the summer after leaving West Brom following a trial last season.

Second-year scholar Henderson, 18, who is from Boxford near Sudbury and who joined Bury Town on loan at the weekend but is still able to play for the Blues, lined-up alongside stand-in skipper Cole Skuse at the centre of the defence.

Cotter - whose last first-team match was as a late sub in the 4-0 win at Reading in the penultimate match of 2017/18 - was at right-back and Myles Kenlock on the left.

The Blues again played a three-man midfield with Brett McGavin behind Emyr Huws and El Mizouni.

Up front, James Norwood played down the middle with Jordan Roberts back after his toe injury on the left and Armando Dobra on the right.

There were more youngsters on the bench, academy keeper Jake Alley, left-back Tommy Smith, 16-year-old midfielder Liam Gibbs, who made his debut as a late sub in the last round, midfielder Tommy Hughes and strikers Tyreece Simpson and Ben Folami, who all also appeared earlier in the competition. On-loan Spurs winger Anthony Georgiou was the only senior man among the subs.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson also rung the changes, making nine from the team which beat Dover Athletic 3-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday. Only Dan Butler and Joe Ward kept their places with strike pair Mo Eisa and Ivan Toney on the bench.

There was an early scare for debutant Henderson when Siriki Dembele went to ground under his attention in the penalty area in the opening minute but referee Graham Salisbury felt there was no foul.

On three, Jones headed over for the home side, then Serhat Tasdemir shot too high from distance.

Town’s first attack of the game came down the right with Cotter and El Mizouni exchanging passes before the Irishman crossed to Norwood on the penalty spot. The striker hit a shot on the turn but scuffed through to Aaron Chapman in the Peterborough goal.

In the 10th minute El Mizouni found Dobra on the right but the Albanian U19 international’s cross was too close to Chapman.

A minute later, Tasdemir hit a low curling shot from the edge of the Town box which Przybek claimed confidently down to his left.

Przybek was in action again in the 17th minute, getting across to his left to bat Butler’s 25-yard strike, which was moving in the air, away from goal.

A minute later, the young keeper was forced into another impressive save, Ward hitting a top-corner-bound shot across him from the left which he again did well to palm away.

Aside from the occasional attack down the Blues’ right, all the threat had come from Posh. As the game approached the 20-minute mark Town wingers Roberts and Dobra swapped flanks.

And in the 23rd minute Roberts, who was a schoolboy with the Peterborough academy, started the move which saw the Blues take the lead when he seized on a loose pass just inside the Town half.

The ex-Crawley man fed Norwood, who took the ball on to the edge of the area before hitting a shot which Chapman saved but couldn’t hold on to and El Mizouni beat Roberts, who would have been offside, to the rebound to score his first senior goal.

On the half hour, Roberts hit a 30-yard freekick not too far over Chapman’s crossbar but a minute later the home side were level.

Town defenders backed off as 17-year-old Jones brought the ball into the area before rifling a low shot past Przybek to his left to claim his third goal of the season in only his fifth senior appearance.

In the 37th minute Tasdemir was shown the first yellow card of the night for a poor challenge on Dobra.

As half-time approached, Posh were pinning the Blues back in their area, Tasdemir hitting a shot which Henderson blocked, then Dembele struck an effort from distance which was diverted behind.

Posh would have felt hard done by to go in behind at the break, having looked the more dangerous side up to the Blues’ smash-and-grab goal and again the more threatening side once Jones had equalised.

For Town, Przybek could be pleased with his first 45 minutes of senior football having made two or three important saves, while Henderson also acquitted himself well after the early scare. Other than the goal and Roberts’s freekick, the Blues had rarely threatened.

The Blues swapped Skuse for 18-year-old Tommy Smith, who also joined Bury Town on loan at the weekend, ahead of the second half. Smith, the third debutant of the evening, went to left-back with Kenlock moving to centre-half.

El Mizouni curled a low shot which Chapman claimed down to his left three minutes after the restart, then within a minute Norwood, now in a front two with Roberts with Dobra in at the top point of a midfield diamond, struck another effort, also from the edge of the box, which failed to seriously test the keeper.

Posh should have gone in front in the 50th minute when Dembele found Ward charging in at the back of the box unchecked on the left but the winger somehow shot wide of the post when it looked easier to score.

Two minutes later, Henderson did well to block as Jones shot on the turn having been found by a ball in from the left.

Posh were dominating the early stages of the second half and on 55 Dembele brought the ball along the edge of the box before hitting his shot not that far wide.

Three minutes later, Smith was booked for a foul on Idris Kanu, then on 63 Peterborough swapped Ward for Frankie Kent.

Moments after the change, Dembele chased a bouncing ball down the right and looped an effort wide from a difficult angle.

Soon after, Butler scraped a shot wide from the left, then on 68 a Town toe diverted his low cross wide but with referee Salisbury and his assistant awarding a goalkick, much to the annoyance of the home support.

A minute later, Roberts found space on the edge of the area to shoot but Chapman was able to claim with little fanfare.

Huws was booked for a rather cynical trip on the breaking Dembele in the 70th minute, then two minutes later the Welshman scraped a shot wide from 20 yards.

On 78 Tasdemir hit a low shot through to Przybek with the game now even with neither side particularly looking like scoring.

With seven minutes remaining Posh brought on first-choice strike pair Toney and Eisa for Jones and Kanu. Moments later, Roberts and Butler were booked after the Town man was booked just outside the box and then adjudged to have reacted, which looked harsh.

Huws took the freekick and hit a well-struck shot which Chapman did well to turn over from under his bar.

The Blues were on top with most of the game now being played in the Posh half but as the match moved into its final scheduled minute Toney flicked a header to Przybek’s right with the keeper saving confidently.

Referee Salisbury added five additional minutes with Peterborough now pressing the Blues, Dembele seeing a shot blocked and then Toney being caught offside.

Soon after, Huws brought the ball into the area and hit a low shot which Chapman saved down to his left. Moments later, the keeper beat Roberts to the ball conceding a corner which came to nothing.

Seconds before the whistle, Huws made a vital block from Tasdemir after the Peterborough midfielder had been found in space on the penalty spot. As Town cleared, referee Salisbury confirmed the game would go to penalty kicks.

Posh will feel they had had the better of the second half - as they had the first - and enough chances to have won it, however, the young Blues battled away and had spells on top, albeit without creating too many opportunities, Huws’s freekick was the only serious save Chapman was forced to make.

Eisa took the first spotkick for the home side and beat Przybek in front of the home terrace.

Roberts was handed the ball for Town’s first penalty and hit the top corner to Chapman’s right.

Toney took Posh’s second kick and hit it low to the Blues’ keeper’s left and into the corner of the net.

McGavin, who had put in another tidy display, was next for Town but saw his penalty saved by Chapman low to his right. However, Przybek kept the scoreline at 2-1 by saving Dembele’s kick to his left.

Kenlock levelled by rolling his penalty into the net having sent the keeper the wrong way having idiosyncratically shuffled his way up to the spot before Butler made it 3-2 by hitting the roof of the net.

El Mizouni made it 3-3 with a kick which went in off Chapman’s hand to his left, then Posh skipper Niall Mason sent Przybek the wrong way to make it 4-3.

Norwood, who had had his quietest game for the Blues, needed to score to keep Town in it and he did, lashing into the top corner and appearing to damage the goal in doing so.

Kyle Barker netted the first of the sudden death penalties for the home side before Huws confidently slammed his kick to Chapman’s left and into the net to make it 5-5.

Przybek brilliantly saved ex-Colchester man Kent’s low kick down to his right to hand Cotter the chance to win it for the Blues, which he did with a low kick to Chapman’s left and into the corner of the net.

The Irish youngster and Przybek celebrated with their team-mates, the Blues having won only their third ever penalty shoot-out, the most recent at Shrewsbury in the League Cup in 2009. The keeper then made his way into the crowd to celebrate with his family.

Town now go into tomorrow night’s draw for the third round - again regionalised on a north-south basis - which is live on Sky Sports News at 7.15pm.

I was a doubter of Paul's rotation policy, choice of formations and use of substitutions before today's game but after we won on pens tonight I now think we are great and will win the league (and possibly the Football Association Cup)

Fantastic achievement for the young lads in the team to win a pen shoot out away from home.
The waste of time cup could be a blessing for all these fringe players getting a chance and having a chance playing at Wembley. You never know we could get there.

Algarvefan, agree that it's great to see the young guns perform so well. What's not to be positive about? In my opinion we're not as good as we were at the end of last season. I have a generally positive outlook on life and had really belief last year that we would beat the drop but honestly can see no progress on the pitch, sorry!
