Evans: We Probably Should Have Won Three or Four Zero
Friday, 27th Dec 2019 11:49

Gillingham boss Steve Evans felt his team deserved to beat the Blues by three or four goals at Portman Road on Boxing Day.

“Our performance was outstanding,” he told the Kent Messenger following the 0-0 draw. “I think both Gillingham and Ipswich fans will have seen that we probably should have won three or four zero. We had three great chances in the first half and a couple of good chances in the second half.

“I can’t fault my players. You look at the resources of Ipswich Town, probably 10-fold, if not 15 to what we’ve got.

“I said to the players before the game, that doesn’t earn you the right to win any football match, you have to come together as a team and be a unit and I thought all over the pitch we were very bright.”

Regarding the Blues Evans, who fell out with Town manager Paul Lambert at the Priestfield Stadium earlier in the season, added: “I am not going to talk about Ipswich Town’s performance, it’s not my job, but I didn’t expect that type of performance. I thought it was going to be really tough but it wasn’t tough in spells.

“We created chances, we passed through them, when you look at their teamsheet I shake my head because it’s full of quality players, but that’s their issues, not my issue and I am only focused on myself.

“On another day Brandon has a couple and Mika [Mandron] has a shot when he probably should have played Tommy [O’Connor] in. We should have been three up in 20 minutes. We were that dominant and they were good chances.

“We should have had three or four and that must be of great concern if you are an Ipswich Town supporter, but good for us. On another day we put them in.”

Reflecting further on the Town squad, he said: “They have got outstanding quality. In wide areas they have got Gwion Edwards, who was absolutely magnificent for me at Posh and they have Alan Judge who has terrorised my teams for years, the boy Jon Nolan who was at Shrewsbury, they have magnificent offensive players.

“[Jackson] is excellent, they outbid us at Posh, we were trying to get him [in the summer of 2018]. They have outstanding players who cost a lot of money, probably 15-fold the budget we work to, but we have never thought about resources, we have just said we will sign the best available for what resources we are given.”

Little veiled dig at a Town from the Gills manager there I think . A case of ...”look at you , all that quality in your squad and you aren't cutting it “. Sad thing is, he isn't wrong, is he!

It's where he says, I thought it was going to be tough, but it wasn't in spells, that is the most worrying. Whether it is through quality, or just effort and endeavour, it should always be tough for the opposition.

Ironically, three or four zero is what his weighing scales reads.

He's not wrong. We've got to restart our season again. ALL games in this league will be tricky

There's no point us getting touchy when he's probably right based on the game yesterday. Unfortunately, that's how poor we are at the moment, when a bang average L1 side should be beating us comfortably at PR. Sad times.

Thing is, he is 100% right. We are appalling to watch and a real soft touch.

This is nonsense. We were very poor for 30 mins and at no point great. We were however better then them 2be half and whilst we never did enough to win a draw was about right. 4-0 and the rest of the comments is moronic and it's pretty clear he's carrying on his spat with Lambert and trying to manipulate our own fans against Lambert. He's a nasty little pig.

"He can talk can't he? He certainly gives his jaw some exercise... I don't know what else" I will always love Mick McCarthy for that comment.

I really dislike this guy but can anyone really argue with his comments!?
Yesterday was up there with the worst games I have attended for a long time, no urgency, no attacking threat, no clue! At least PR Paul will buy us a pint in the fanzone next home game I guess.

It would've been great to have beating the Gills yesterday if only to put the lid on this tub of lard!

This bloke truly is bitter. Accepting they had the better chances, they came for a draw and ran the clock down from 60 minutes their left back taking throw ins from 100 yards away down the right and sauntering over each time. Surprised he didn't mention the fact this is the third game this season they haven't scored against us and we have 5 in the bin. Oh and we are in the promotion spots and hopefully won't be seeing him for sometime after this season!

Like or loath this guy he is 100% right! We do have more quality than probably any other team in the league however the league is very poor as well. You have to wonder the postponed games due to fringe players playing international games we would have played when we were in good form and probably now had more point because of it plus the rotation every game for me are the obvious issues to why we are now struggling with form only worse is Southend on current form. Everyone on here knows enough about football to realise you need partnerships all over the pitch. Most of us could name a centre half pairing or strikers or centre midfield pairing throughout the years but we'll struggle this year as so many players have swapped and again that's what we need in the team understanding pairings.

They should have won the match that's for sure. Not by three or four though!

I think Evans is a bit of a fool. But, we can't pretend that we were anything but awful. I was at the game and had been looking forward to getting back to winning ways. What I witnessed was a shambles and very sad. Yes we have (on paper) good players, but for some reason they are under performing. I think the players and Lambert need to take a long, hard look at themselves and start to fight for this wonderful club.

Fat man speaks the truth, my biggest issue is we get outworked every single game, maybe that is a factor of our players not knowing what is expected of them

we MAY have the strongest squad in division, but they dont do anything to prove it .We are performing exactly like we did for most of last season which ended in relegation.Whilst im not suggesting we are likely to be relegated, we are on track to throw away our present position and end mid table. Again, this season we are struggling to score goals, we are not giving front man/men any service. AND we are not showing any passion. AND as was case last season Paul Lambert seems unable to do anything about it .
