O'Neill: No Indication From Everton on Garbutt Future
Friday, 3rd Jan 2020 14:49

Blues general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill says Everton have given no indication whether they would be prepared to allow Luke Garbutt to move on a permanent basis in January.

The 26-year-old has made a big impression since joining the Blues on loan in August, scoring six goals and also having a hand in several other goals either directly or indirectly from his set pieces, most notably James Norwood’s goal at Wycombe on Monday.

Manager Paul Lambert recently said O’Neill was speaking to Everton about Garbutt’s future, however, there currently appears to be little progress on that front.

“I think Luke’s done very well. He’s been great for us in that position. He’s added goals to his game, he’s added assists, even today as you will have seen,” O’Neill told BBC Radio Suffolk after the game at Wycombe.

“He’s a player for us that has done very well and someone we would like to have in the future but there are a lot of things that go in that.

“He’s with a Premier League club at the moment and we have to respect that and we’ll have conversations later on.”

O’Neill says Everton have given no indication that they would be prepared to allow Garbutt, who is out of contract at the end of the season, to move on at the present time - “No, nothing at the moment” - but he believes the player himself would be interested.

“Just from conversations we’ve had, I think he’s enjoying his football, he’s having a run of games,” he said.

“I think he’s enjoying the challenge, but as per the last eight or 10 games one or two of them they could have improved and played a bit better and we’re aware of that and he’s aware of that and he was part of that conversation when Paul said at Lincoln when the door was shut there were conversations had.

“It’s healthy for the team to address that and put a better performance in like they did today.”

"Asked about potentially joining the Blues on a permanent basis in October, Garbutt said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I’m settled in here. The lads are brilliant, the fans are top drawer and playing in front of 20,000 people is what I want to be doing. As long as we keep doing well I don’t see why not.

“But I’ll leave all that to my agent and the powers that be at this football club. At the moment I’m just focusing on each game as it comes and trying to perform to the best I can.

“If we’re promoted, Championship football would be a pull. That’s where this club should be, at the very minimum.

“I eventually want to settle down somewhere, at a club where I feel I belong and where I’ve got a home and can push on with my career. I want to settle down, perform and all that type of thing."

Luke is on a Premiership contract, I fear his next port of call will be to a big championship club.
A club who wont flinch at giving him a 3 year contract and 20k a week. That's the sort of contract he will demand being a free transfer.
And no shortage of takers.

He would be a massive loss to Town, and frankly it isn't looking good is it .

I don't see why he'd sign here in January - keep this form up and he'll be in the Championship next year with or without us

He's better off seeing out this loan and going to a decent Championship club on a free transfer in the summer. There will be proper clubs in that division that will not think twice about paying £20k a week for him, whereas he'd have to settle for a fraction of that at this tinpot lower league club.

Garbutt is the best left sided player we have had in a long time, since Mings probably. He is vital to our progress currently. I'd say it's crucial we sign him up ASAP.
He wants to stay. Managerial change at Everton will have delayed progress.

Why not contact Everton and say we'd like to take him permanently now, rather than later on? Yes, his agent my think he can get him a better contract elsewhere but we can at least try.

Certainly looks the part ; a proper footballer with identifiable skills , vision and enthusiasm who we'd do well to get on board ,
Every confidence ITFC are playing the cards correctly, but L O'N will never be able to reveal the hand until all is settled one way or another ; but he's an asset down the left hand side !

Think promotion is key...if we go up, every chance he will stay.

I would love to see him stay when he is left side midfield(not full back) he offers a serious threat(as at Wycombe) maybe he's waiting to see if we go up he seems settled here, but of course he will not be offered more money that our 2 highest earning liabilities(who we are stuck with come hell or high water) so that would appear to kill that off great shame he's the type of footballer we need going forward.

A club like Bristol City, Preston or Brentford will probably nab him. Clubs who have all overtaken us in recent years despite being smaller clubs. Why? They've got their recruitment spot on. Brentford continue to climb even after selling Maupay.

You maybe right Wickets.
Although it wouldn't surprise me if a club came up with a small fee for Everton, and an enticing signing on fee for Luke. And signed him in this window. Either way the chances of him being with us beyond this season are Zero.

From the lad's point of view he is now 26 so the next contract will cover the best years of his career. He owes it to himself to get it right.

alfromcol and Ipswichbusiness. He is probably right though, just saying.

I won't call him a or anyone a lad. Luke Garbutt deserves a club in a better position than us. Have to realise we won't attract genuine quality in this league unless we are performing better and running it with any small show of ambition. We ain't so I for one don't expect much

Concur with all the positives comments on Garbutt. A fine talent who give you the ‘feel good factor' when's he's on the ball. Fingers crossed he stays the season then we'll see. Maybe I'm deluded or ultra optimistic but if Lambert can get the best out of the squad then we'll go up, no ifs, buts or maybes, I'm telling it as it is BELIEVE 👌

He might just love Suffolk!
Why not?
If he wants somewhere to settle and he enjoys it at Portman Road, then why not? Megabucks can't buy happiness.
Best you lot turn on the charm and sell it to him!

ThatMuhrenCross why does paying £20k pw make a Championship club “proper”? Seems more like a reckless club gambling on getting to the Premiership. It won't be long before one of your “proper” clubs goes bang!!

Yes alfromcol. That is fact. I work very close to the club and players.
So do try to provide information that's current, and on point.

Worth pulling out all the stops to try and get a deal over the line for Luke ASAP! However I fear he will have options above our means and in that case I hope for once we are proactive and already doing our homework on another addition to take his place, you see teams like Southampton losing stars and have already got a replacement monitored and ready to step up... this is vital in modern football for a club in our position.
