Ayr Boss Impressed By Debutant Drinan
Monday, 20th Jan 2020 11:27

Ayr United boss Mark Kerr had praise for Town striker Aaron Drinan’s performance as the Honest Men beat Scottish Premiership side Ross County 1-0 in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

Drinan, 21, joined the Scottish Championship club on loan for the remainder of the season on Friday after a trial. Midfielder Brett McGavin also trained at Somerset Park but returned to Town at the end of the week.

“It was good to see our first signing really contribute to the team,” Kerr told Not the Old Firm.

“Big Aaron has been in three or four days this week and that rawness and willingness to run in behind and just take the hits for us is something we haven’t had for a while.

“Shanks [Lawrence Shankland] did that for us. Hopefully Aaron will get some goals for us as well, but he’s brought a different dimension to us.

“We’re still playing our nice wee four or five-pass combinations to break through the lines really quickly. It’s just nice, the boys were saying that it’s just nice to put it up there and try and get on a second ball. It just breeds confidence in the team now knowing that we can play both ways.”

Republic of Ireland U21 international Drinan, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2021 with the club having an option for a further season, spent most of the first half of the campaign on loan at GAIS in the Swedish second division.

Is that the only photo we have of him in a Town kit?

It's lowly football so best not to get too carried away. Maybe if big Drinan scores a hateful up there though!

Why did Brett McGavin return? Surely he's good enough for this team! Maybe it was his own decision? Have I missed something?

Maybe he plays better than he trains?! Not unheard of but never been given a chance in the 1st team. Always remember under Burley (something he took from Sir Bobby I believe) that when a player came to the Club, or a kid was deemed ready for 1st team, he would often publicly state he was giving the player 3/4 games to show what they could do. What a completely sensible approach (assuming they not complete duffers) to seeing what a player can bring to a team without the pressure of being immediately dropped. ANOTHER thing I miss from those days!

Not sure, Town were happy for him to go so assume they felt he wasn't what they're after.

Not got many as he's been on loan for most of the last 18 months!

Lambert is right, these guys need the rough and tumble competition of League football to progress, and come back as men with improvement in their all round game.
Shame McGavin didn't stay there too -would also do Dozzell good to be on loan at a suitable Club.
Under 23 games are totally different in so many ways to League games, as one would expect.
Good on ya Drinan - give it your all.

The biggest thing about this story is that Mark Kerr was a Championship Manager legend

Drinan could be worthy of a 1st team squad place next season? Getting a full season of competitive football under his belt with loan spells in Sweden and now Scotland could be the making of him.

It's all about proving yourself, sadly this lad has struggled to do that, the only place he seems to have scored at goals is at Waterford. He has a spell at non league Sutton without any goals but I seem to recall he spent most of his time on the bench there. He didn't score in the Swedish 2nd tear either. If you go on loan as a striker you need to get goals in the non-league scene, Jack Marriott was ripping it up when loaned out at that level. Let's be honest town need a good target man option in our strike force and at the moment other than maybe Will Keane there is nobody else stopping him at least getting on the bench

Along with Cotter I am sure both lads showed promise but I fear they will drift off of the scene - Micks generosity to the Irish clubs perhaps clouded his judgement.

He needs to find a new club watched him several times playing for u23s looks way off first team standard and hasn't set the world alight when on loan. You will always get the odd fan with a soft spot for a player who will say stick him in the first team but unless we drop down two leagues it's not going to happen.

Its obvious Drinan is built and ready for senior football and can make a difference to Ayr. He is used to living away from home and wouldnt be afraid of a new environment. Its a much safer bet to take Drinan rather on at this stage. Im sure Brett will do well elsewhere but Drinan is a good bit ahead in terms of development and experience

Disagree Brian a mul Brett has been involved far more than Drinian and had more first team action this season and is a far better prospect in the long term.
