Legend Butcher Set for Town Role
Thursday, 6th Feb 2020 13:28

Blues legend Terry Butcher is set for a coaching position at Playford Road.

The club are formulating a role for the former Town and England captain, 61, primarily working in the academy but also having some involvement with the senior players.

“Terry is in doing some some stuff with us at the moment,” general manager of football operations Lee O’Neill confirmed.

“We’re trying to look at something a little bit bespoke for him, for a number of reasons. One, the icon that he is and the information that he has.

“I think he would help the players, the parents, the coaches that we have at the club, the first team as well, there are other areas that he can add assistance to.

“I think he has a great relationship with the manager, and from my point of view and [head of academy player and coaching development] Bryan [Klug]’s point of view he has a lot to offer, so it’s about finding a mutual benefit for both parties.

“He has a lot of commitments that he’s engaged to so it’s trying to find something that suits him. But he’s in coaching with us at the moment and we hope to put something in place.”

Butcher, whose other commitments include his position as legend-in-residence on BBC Radio Suffolk’s Life’s a Pitch, was spotted with Klug at Monday’s U23s game at Colchester.

George burley has proved how well he works with youngsters out on the training pitch, the national job did not suit his style of management only having players with you on a short basis didnt give him time to implement his style,i for one believe burley would get dozzell playing, anyone who can remember the way he got the likes of clapham venus wilnis etc playing out from the back knows what a great coach he was.

I think this is good especially if he has a hands on approach to coaching our defenders and all players to be fair. Now need a place for Burley also , I know you have to deal with the here and now but something from our excellent past cant be a bad thing to maybe instill a bit of hunger in the players which was clearly lacking on Saturday and against Rotheram.

Burley/Holland would be preferred...and by the way @blues1 you could put Klopp/Guardiola in charge of Scotland and they would fall flat on their faces!...poison chalice, who has been successful there?

Exactly how many coaches have we got now, and what have they been doing? If we are appointing more, how about firing some underachieving ones. Too many underachieving staff at a debt ridden club. On the pitch performances from the players we have has been a disgrace and not just the last 2 games.

Anyone who thought the Burley / Butcher combo' was not a good idea - but Lambert was - I'd put money on us being in a better place than we are, should it have happened in the first place.
The biggest squad, the highest budget, best gates - yet being shamed, yes shamed, by both Rotherham and Peterboro' within a week under Lambert.
Deny that Lambert lovers.

@ TimmyH and Blueboy81.

I'm usually against the 'get the ex Ipswich players in, they bleed blue'
Etc etc....

Maybe I'm in a time warp?

But love a Burley/Butcher combo to take charge.

Blues1

Perfectly happy to stand corrected, but Scotland ranked in the top ten?

I recall them having a good side late 70's early 80's when our Scottish players and Liverpool's Scottish players were the best in the country.

But since then?

As I've said many times before, we need some genuine ITFC Pedigree in influencing capacity within the Club. People who genuinely care, not just people who are interested only in short term spin, and long term contracts.
They are out there, more than capable, longing to be involved for the right reasons. Over the years the Club has lost so much of it's true identity.
Getting such people in would make Evans job easier, and our pedigree back, in so doing replacing dead wood.
Coaches, and Scouts - where are they ? - what do they do ? - where is the evidence ?
Until we do the above - we'll be what we are, and have been for far too long.

Who's paying for this? Evans.
Don't buy any players, just hand out 5yr contracts.
Some on here would hire the entire ‘80/81 team as coaches - just for the nostalgia.

Butch definitely needs to sort out our first team defence . They haven't got a clue how to work as a unit . The back line is NEVER in line or moving as one . Little wonder we are picked off by opponents

Brendenward35: I suspect your comments align perfectly to another posters (much maligned) views on here, that Town have a very poor TECHNICAL approach to the game. A view I fully concur with too!

I dunno. I am sure he has a lot of knowledge, but listening every other week at his commentary on Radio Suffolk he sometimes seem to think everything works like it did in the 70s and 80s. Is he "up to date"? Anyway, it´s good that the club is trying new stuff and involving our proud history in our way forward.
