Wark Tops Stand Pillar Poll
Wednesday, 26th Feb 2020 17:14

Town have announced the 12 players who will be featured on the pillars which run through the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand concourse with legend John Wark having topped the voting.

Almost 2,000 season ticket holders responded to the club’s request for votes on “icons, heroes, legends of the club [from] across the years” to be featured on the pillars.

Wark is joined by Mick Mills, Terry Butcher, Kevin Beattie, Paul Mariner, George Burley, Frans Thijssen and Arnold Muhren from the FA and UEFA Cup-winning Sir Bobby Robson era, while Sir Alf Ramsey’s First and Second Division championship-winning team is represented by Ray Crawford with his strike partner Ted Phillips having finished just outside the top 12.

Matt Holland was second in the voting and Marcus Stewart and Jim Magilton, his colleagues in the team which was promoted in 1999/00 and then finished fifth in the Premier League the following season, are also in the 12.

Current skipper Luke Chambers was the player from the current era closest to the 12, finishing 15th.

The tributes to the 12 are expected to be in place by the end of the season as Portman Road undergoes a makeover.

The stairwells in the Sir Bobby Robson Stand and the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand are set to feature club graphics and the club’s history is to be portrayed in the windows at the back of the Cobbold Stand over the summer.

Other iconic players will feature on flags which will be put in place next week in the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand concourse, while a Legends of Ipswich Town mural is already in place in the Sir Bobby Robson Stand"".

so in over 140 years of history we have selected 3 teams. Such a shame that only 12 can be honoured and i believe Chambers needs some recognition but i agree its hard to remove anyone from that list. personally as an 80s and 90s massive fan i am happy with a lot of the choices and also believe Holland and Super Jim deserve their spots. But i enjoyed jason dozzell, chris kiwomya, dalian atkinson etc too. such a tough decision - i propose we put up more pillars!

The first David Johnson, Clive Woods, Eric Gates, Trevor Whymark, Paul Cooper. I thought Mark Venus was bloody awesome as well. Just throwing it out there :)

Good selection, my only one gripe is that Ted Phillips didn't make it, a phenomenal goal scoring record made him a true legend and a local.

I would have probably dropped out Jim Magilton, not that he too isn't worthy of consideration.

I was under the impression that this wasn't supposed to be about who supporters favorite players were but that legends and service to the club should be taken into account, therefore how Simon Milton hasn't made the cut is disrespectful to the service he has given.

Being in my 40's i feel Mauricio Taricco, the poodle loving Martlesham living uber-passionate Argentinian, should have just sneaked ahead of his peers & friends - Jim M and Matt H.

Lets just hope that in 10 years time, if there was another similar vote, that there would be a challenge to these 12 players; for the current and ongoing health of the club.

Just makes me realise how mediocre we are now...and gradually accepting less and less

Good to see Warky at number one. He was the finest Town player I've ever seen. Brings back great memories of our UEFA cup nights. Sadly will never be repeated.

As well as the twelve picked you could/should pick, Whymark, Johnson, Woods, Hamilton, Viljoen, Hunter, Morris, Talbot, Osman, Philips, Brazil, Mobary, who have all produced the goods in the top flight for town & you could pick another dozen after them who I have left out before you could justify putting Chambers or any recent players as a footballing legend, fist pumping & being a nice bloke in the 3rd division dosen't compare to doing it in the top flight.

We all know what Chambers brings to the club on and off the pitch, but to mention him along our ultra legends (I.e Butcher) is nothing short than total embarrassment. ‘Get a grip' to coin a North stand 80's chant!

Alex Mathie hatrick should be honoured

and Surely a tribute column to Rob Ullathorne and Gary Megson is warranted

Jim Magilton in there?...he only had one possibly two good seasons with us, there are other players that should be in his place i.e. Gates, Kiwomya, Osman, Cooper etc.

By the way @itfchorry - Vincent-Young... are you having a laugh!?!

If only that was our first team now. Draw straws for who gets to be in goal and who's on the subs bench though.

Nice to see Jimbo make the list - the last truly great midfielder this club had.

Dockerblue added 11:22 - Feb 27
Chambers should not be anywhere near that list, what about Big Al? a player who is a Town Legend, Captain Calamity should study footage of AH and learn the art of defending.

Brilliant! Thats most of the players i or listed

Cannot believe that Chambers is anywhere near the top 12. It seems the majority of voters were basing their decision purely on the number of appearances and how a player comes across publicly. Surely how the player performed and how the team performed should be paramount.....especially given that Chambers has stood on deck as captain whilst the crap ship ITFC sinks beneath the waves......Evans and Lambert watching on from the safety of the shore

John Wark........now thats a Town legend!

I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned Micky Stockwell!
Always gave 101%

How many games, over 500 if my memory serves me correctly, and in how many positions did he play?

John Wark has been my absolute favourite player ever, but Micky was a star too.

I have to appologise for forgetting to mention Eric Gates in my earlier post, ......... a phenomenal goal scorer & part of the best team town have ever had, not forgetting Roger Osborne FA cup goal scorer who kept Cruyff quiet against Barcelona amongst numerous other performances while serving the town,............sorry but If they didn't get us into the top flight or play for us in the top flight there are far to many that have that are in the queue before any present day players & if you are not old enough to appreciate the difference it doesn't change the facts.

If you are only limited to 12, then it really has to be the crème de la crème, and I agree pretty much with the names chosen. But then how do you leave out Colin Viljoen, Charlie Woods, Ted Philips, Eric Gates, and more? As someone has already said, we need more pillars - a lot more!
