Dobra on Target as U23s Draw at Cardiff
Monday, 9th Mar 2020 15:05

Armando Dobra scored a fantastic solo goal as Town’s U23s drew 1-1 with Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium this afternoon.

The Albanian U19 international, who is still to agree a new deal with the Blues with his current terms up in the summer but with the club having an option for a further year, put Gerard Nash’s side in front in the 25th minute.

However, Kieron Evans levelled for the home side eight minutes from time.

Late on, right-back Dylan Crowe made his return to action having missed most of the season through injury.

Town’s U23s, who are in action again at Playford Road on Friday when they face Millwall in a rearranged game (KO 1pm), remain unbeaten in 2020.

U23s: Przybek, Donacien, Kenlock, O'Reilly, Ndaba, McGavin, Morris (c), Hughes (Healy 77), Dobra, Simpson (K Brown 70), Gibbs (Crowe 77). Unused: Bort, Viral.

Dobra has been let down by Lambert. Could have played loads more for first team. And another thing I hate tag on shirts quoting “1st Team” Naff!

Overall, an enjoyable game in which Town looked positive and pressed throughout. Armando Dobra's goal was sharp and clinical. Cardiff though had a solid central defence and lively full backs, which made it difficult to service Tyreece Simpson adequately - though he offered a constant threat. Brett McGavin's physical presence and (even!) quick feet mark him out as quite a prospect. All in all, Town were well worth a draw, and were a shade unlucky with the somewhat messy goal conceded.

I was wondering what had happened to Dylan Crowe why was his injury kept quiet. Think there's more to this than meets the eye. Think it's time to give Dobra a run in the first team ,coming on for 10minutes at the end probably does more harm than good to a young players confidence, should have been on at half time. Perhaps Lambert was saving him for the u23s game this afternoon. I can see him rejecting a new contract if he doesn't get more game time.

I found it very odd how, after coming on at Blackpool and doing so well, that Dobra was not used at all in the Fleetwood match. We invest so much in the youth academy, yet our side is one of the older sides in League One.

Why do our managers insist on playing experienced pro's who constantly fail to perform , give the youngsters who have more enthusiasm and passion a chance, cannot do any worse at the moment! Look at Southend this weekend, average age of under 21 and went and won, well done!

I'm sure Dobra feels he has a bright future at Ipswich.

It's a scandal he's not at least been tried on a few more occasions.

One of no other players I can think of that might actually get people out of their seats.

Imagine if he'd have done that for the first team. It's be a contender for goal of the season. Skills!

The u23's are unbeaten in 2020. Let's see more of them in the first team soon. Dobra's goal was a great solo effort. I think that's what could hold him back his decision making, hes very positive which is fantastic but sometimes runs into crowds of defenders. If he learns when to pass and go for the return he will be a great player. McGavin was very good in the middle of the park, very calm and looked good on the ball. Young Gubbs also had a solid match in my opinion. All 3 deserve more time in the first team set up.

Just seen the goal, what a cracker! Seriously, who in the first team could run with the ball like that and produce the finish as well? I can't think of any that could.

What has this lad got to do to get a place in the first team? Arguably one of the only attacking players we have with a bit of flair.

If PL takes the view that there is value in U23 football cos it is not man's football, then what purpose does Dobra serve playing yesterday?

Is anyone surprised at the quality of the goal? No
Was that quality evident early season and whenever given the chance around the 1st team? Yes
Will he start on Saturday? NO !

PL is like most of our previous managers who profess trust in youth, and the minute things get difficult drag out the older players. I remember Burley identifying kids like Bramble and publicly announcing he/they deserved a shot and would have a run of 5 games to show what they could do without the pressure of having to be a world beater on debut. That is how to manage youth. PL ease take note.

It's easy to get carried away with these u23 games , but the standard is very poor . That's why younger players tend to go out on loan to get more competitive football and further their development. But in Dobra's case i think he's a special talent and should at least be getting 45mins involvement in games now.

Sounds like he is too good for the first team.

Please play Dobra in all the remaining games. If he doesn't play he may get frustrated and look for a move away. Although U23 is not a great standard, young players will never 'push on' if not given enough minutes in the first team.

Gerard Nash would be a good choice as 1st team manager. Couldn't do any worse than Lambert and would give youth a chance.
