Town-Everton Tie to Feature as FA Cup Quarter-Final Classic
Friday, 20th Mar 2020 16:50

Town’s FA Cup 1985 tie against Everton at Goodison Park will be one of the featured games on FA Cup Quarter-Final Classics: Part Two which is being screened on BBC One on Sunday to replace the scheduled live match at 4.40pm.

The BBC was set to show the Norwich-Manchester United quarter-final tie but with all football off until April 30th at the earliest, they are instead showing highlights of classic fixtures from the past.

Ten-man Town secured a 2-2 draw at Goodison - Kevin Wilson and Romeo Zondervan finding the net and Steve McCall being shown a red card - but were beaten 1-0 in the replay at Portman Road.

Derby County against Sheffield Wednesday from 1993 and Manchester United versus Portsmouth from 2008 are also featured on the same programme as the Blues’ tie against the Toffeemen, who were the trophy holders and on their way to the First Division title, while Town were successfully battling relegation. The programme is already available on iPlayer here.

We were unlucky in the replay. It was a great game and I remember standing in a packed Churchmans and Town putting loads of pressure on the Everton goal but the ball just wouldn’t go in - and then I think Russell Osman was judged to have fouled in the box and a dubious Everton penalty?

Was devastated after this game. The nearest I ever got to a scrap after the game, when walking back to the car - really hated Everton for a while.

Steve McCall was always a dirty b&gger! That was a team in decline though, but still a million times better than what we have now. How we need a Kevin Wilson type finisher now... didn’t Chelsea pinch him off us?! Zondervan was a part of the 91/92 Div 2 winning team under Lyall so he might of been a bit part player but I had forgotten how long he was with us for. Ah, it’s nice to reminisce... and briefly forget how far we have fallen 🙁

yes remember it well, think it was Luton in semi had we progressed, the one thing i remember at Goodison that day was if you tried to stand on the cage to prevent you entering the pitch it was coated in thick black grease , i was covered especially when Romeo scored.

Remember the game Romeo zondervan scored a worldy from the edge of the penalty area, one of the best goals in the FA cup

I love the tricks memories play! Craig, it was about seven yards out mate but to be fair we were ninety yards away and behind a thick metal fence!

Exeterblue, if memory serves me right, Osman was very harshly judged to have handled. It was clearly an accident and right on the edge of the area. For the avoidance of doubt, yes I’m still bitter, and yes, I should get out more.

Those days are unlikely to return sadly, we can,t even manage a cup win let alone a cup run these days.

Didn't Everton equalise really late on (they were a top, top side those days)? Seem to remember it being a free kick, Mountfield header??

Had a clear view of the "handball" incident. Diabolical decision by the referee. Myself and 25,000 + fans were livid at that decision.

Looks like this is being shown at 3:10 not 4:40.
