EFL Aiming for June 6th Restart Claim
Monday, 13th Apr 2020 17:25

The EFL is reportedly hoping to restart the 2019/20 season on June 6th with games played behind closed doors.

According to ESPN, the EFL is aiming for the first Saturday in June to see a resumption of the Championship, League One and League Two fixtures following a three-week mini-pre-season from May 16th. Currently English football is suspended indefinitely.

The report is in line with the letter the EFL sent to clubs late last week in which they said they were targeting playing their leagues' remaining 113 fixtures over 56 days in the summer.

Clubs were told to put their squads on holiday - players are entitled to five weeks’ paid holiday per year - with a view to returning to training on May 16th.

The plans are dependent on developments relating to the coronavirus pandemic and Government advice.

Town, 10th in League One, seven points off the play-offs, have eight games left to play, five at home, three away.

Surely the EFL cant just do as they please. Must get government approval surely. If the restrictions are still in place then no they wont be playing on June 6.

Even behind closed doors they would need a certain number of medical people on site. If the medical people are not stretched enough now, releasing a certain number for a damn football match is taking the mick surely.

Not bothered one way or another. Actually not missed it. Not even sport on the TV!

with you on that Florida, cant see football getting back anytime soon , and in grand scheme of things im not bothered anymore. If people think life is going to carry on as before once this sh#'t is behind us, they need to think again . it wont be .

It's so strange how it was for most of us on here as important as anything in our lives just 2 months ago. I've now forgotten all about football, takeaways and travel. I have noticed however how much money I wasted on football.

EFL stands for 'Eminently Foolish Loonies'....who do they think they are for heaven's sake? People are dying in their thousands and all they care about is their 'precious' season.....nobody (apart from teams at the top) give a damn EFL!! Cancel the season now...yes it will upset some but what is more important in the world we are now living in????

Just madness. They need to wait until this virus is fully contained. Football can continue afterwards & season can be finished in front of fans when it is safe to do so.
The delay can be as long as is needed

Absolutely no chance and any talk of dates is complete stupidity and also somewhat disrespectful.

I don't see how or why the season should be cancelled. With other countries lifting restrictions, you would think there is a very good chance the season could resume in June, albeit behind closed doors. That said, tentative plans with a review in a month would seem sensible.

jas0999 yes other countries are lifting the restrictions , BUT baring in mind the state they have been in until a week or so back, i think it will backfire on them , the virus is still out there and no vaccine, it will strike those countries another blow imo. Football will have to take the pain like everything and everyone else, its been all powerful far too long, this episode will be a enormous wake up call .

Just look how in China it's starting off again. We are not talking weeks or even months. This is now how it is going to be

Starting off in China again? These are cases where people are returning from overseas. Let's stick to facts. The proposal says it is dependant on Government approval!!!!

”The plans are dependent on developments...and government advice.” Personally, I think they are over-optimistic, and yes, the situation puts the need to finish the season in perspective. But I don't think it's negative to at least have a plan for returning to normality. Whether that plan works out remains to be seen - ”dependent on government advice.”

There could be a way of overcoming this all and end the season now. Let all the clubs from top to bottom start the next season with their points tally etc as it stands and then play the new season starting as usual adding to their points tally. In other words joining the two seasons together. This way nobody loses out. Those that did well like Liverpool will have a head start whilst those at the bottom will have another chance. This can cascade from top to bottom. Competitions could be restarted in a similar fashion with some tweaking. In this way nobody misses out on the efforts put in by players managers and owners. I think life is more important and it may still be a problem even in August to start playing sports. This pandemic is a war which has to be won but not at the expense of unnecessary loss of life.

Most want the seasons to be completed in a best case scenario. Therefore it should be planned for. The idea of setting a date allows clubs to start preparing is all. They are not saying it is categoric, far from it in fact. But they sure as hell could not play if they didn't plan for it.

Forget this season, all but a very few "hardcore" fans really care about the game right now. Finishing the season after players have been out of training and losing match fitness is just as farcical as cancelling the season all together! The course of the season has been changed beyond recovery, forget it and move on. Personally think the start of next season should be given more consideration than completing this one as things will be far from normal come August. I guess we'll see if the EFL really do consider football to be all about the fans!

BraveBlue, sadly it's very difficult to stick to facts when talking about China. We've heard very few "facts" from the country that puts it's economy very firmly ahead of humanitarian issues.

With all this craziness we are living through nobody gives two hoots about football anymore........

Yet here we all are looking at the TWTD web sire and commenting on it.

I don't see a problem with playing matches behind closed doors provided everyone who will be involved is tested and confirmed virus free. However, footballers and the ancillary staff should not jump the queue for testing when there are front line people risking their lives for the sake of a test kit and PPE.

This will change football as we know it.
All the dates being banded about are pulled from the sky.
When football resumes it will be minus many football clubs who will go under.
The football world and Sky are losing hundreds of millions of pounds.
This is only heading one way.

This is very very tricky and getting the balance right a nightmare----good luck and best wishes to the decision makers.

In the future hopefully some permanent memorial from football to all those lost in this horror story will be forthcoming----football certainly needs to up its game.

For what it's worth it seems unlikely that football will restart as early as that, but why are people having a go at the EFL for establishing an ambition for getting things restarted when affects livelihood's? Also the assumption from some seem to be that they will start again regardless of everything else, but all along the football authorities have clearly stated that they won't do anything unless it's safe to do so. And as football not mattering, that's right, it doesn't. But like so many other unimportant things like going out for a meal or a drink down the pub, it would be an immense psychological boost to see it return, even if it were behind closed doors. Let's not be so quick to knock those at the top for doing their jobs.

Apart from this being a plan to finish the current season off, it's otherwise pointless for us fans. No-one will get to see the game, it won't be televised. The only aim is to finish the 2019/20 season off in time to start the new one.

But, without a vaccination when will supporters be allowed to enter the stadium and watch a game. I really cannot imagine starting a new season without the fans, at the end of the day its an entertainment business. It will be like showing films in cinema's without an audience - pointless.

The whole exercise about playing any game behind closed doors is down to money and honouring the SKY and BT contracts. I for one will have no interest in watching a game on TV played behind closed doors. Maybe SKY will add the crowd noise to the commentary - much like as the Germans did in "Escape to Victory".
