Town Take Up Option on Dozzell's Contract
Tuesday, 5th May 2020 11:46

TWTD understands Town have taken up the one-year option on midfielder Andre Dozzell’s contract.

Dozzell’s terms were up this summer but the deal he signed in May 2017 included an option for the club to keep him for a further season.

The academy product, who turned 21 on Saturday, has been in and out of the side this season making 13 starts and two sub appearances.

Last summer TWTD revealed that Norwich City had made a £3 million approach to the Blues for the England U20 international but were unwilling to meet Town’s asking price, understood to be £5 million. Talks regarding a new Blues contract subsequently took place but with no agreement reached.

In addition to Dozzell, eight other players also have contracts which are up this summer with the club also having options to keep them for another season: Cole Skuse, Gwion Edwards, Will Keane, Jordan Roberts, Danny Rowe, Harry Wright, Armando Dobra and Brett McGavin.

As previously reported, Dobra has all but agreed a new three-year contract which will be signed when he returns to Portman Road, while it seems certain that Roberts, who has spent the second half of the season on loan at Gillingham, will move on.

Given that Town may have next to no income for the next 12 months, most of the out of contract players will be released. Sensible to hang on to Dozzell for a year, though.

Apart from dobra we might as well let the others go.don't think we can afford to keep a large squad any more.

Dozzell simpl;y has not perfortmed when given the chance, but Dobra has shown a real talent when he has had his (few) chances. I accept Dozzell is still a better prospect but needs to start showing us on a regular basis rather than a few moments in a game.

needs a run of 8-12 games in the side before we write him off

Hes a very, very lucky guy in view of current circumstances. The talent is there but will he be able to make it count in the rough and tumble of league 1 when football eventually re-starts?

Andre has good vision and can certainly pick a pass. Some games seem to pass him by without enough contribution though. Can feel like a luxury player at times. Definitely has ability and potential, but just hasn't quite happened for him at Town quite yet though. He's never been a nailed on regular starter. I do think the season when he got injured first game against Birmingham might of been the season he would of broken into the first team regularly, but the serious injury proved a major set back. Maybe Andre needs to do a bit more physical work in the gym, as he has the technique, perhaps just a bit too lightweight in the strength department.

Dozzell for me is a mystery? Clearly has talent, but is inconsistent and lightweight. However, he also seems like one of those players who could leave and be a world beater. With the other players who are nearly out of contract, I would defo keep dobra and mcgavin and maybe Edwards but wouldnt lose sleep if Edwards left also. Skuse has been a decent player in his own way, but clearly had his day here now and we need to move on.

The club must take hard decisions to freshen up and reinvigorate a woefully underperforming squad. Say goodbye to Scuse & Robert's for two and I wouldn't renew Keanes contract. Hes no target man, cant win headers and isnt s natural goalscorer.

Great news! Fantastic player on the ball and I think he's looked good when he's featured this year.

Too lightweight? Come on... we need to drop that stone age mentality. Best players we've had since the Prem has been «light weight»: Gio, Fraser, Lawrence, etc. No one has the ability that Andre's got at ITFC. Give him a run in the team instead of cameo performances and I'm sure he'll blossom.

I thought Dozzell ran the game at Coventry - hard to think of a better passing performance, definitely a player in there but maybe needs more footballers around him. Would he perform in Burleys team of 2000/01 ? I think so
He's also been picked for some games that seem not to suit him- Lincoln and Accrington away were always going to be battles.
Hopefully our scouts have a list of ambitious gems ready to come to the club. but If not keeping Skuse and Edwards on reduced wages for a year may not be a disaster.

I should add, hopefully Andre can make the grade for us. I'm sure he's just as frustrated with his lack of progress (since his injury) as we are. We desperately want to see him come good in a Blue shirt, therefore, let's hope we get to see Andre flourish when football finally resumes again.

Dobra is a must keep, and I haven't seen enough of McGavin to give an enlightened opinion.
I wonder whether we are exercising our option on Dozzell rather than giving him a new contract so as to ensure we take a fee for him in the event of another club moving in, having attracted the Budgies' interest last year.
It might not be a popular comment on here, but I would offer Skuse reduced wages to stay. I believe that he would make an ideal central defensive partner for Wolfenden.
The new wage cap for League 1 will very likely lead to the rest of the out of contract players being allowed to walk.

He is definitely the way forward. Dobra & Rowe worth keeping, the rest are surplus to requirements

Everyone has there favourites, but tell me what has Rowe done for us, overweight, lacks pace and does not know where the goal is

Good move. He needs much more game time from Lambert to realise his potential fully. I think he'd be a far better player in the championship, maybe even the prem than he is in lge1. Style of football would suit him better as you climb the leagues. Hopefully he can do that with us! Surely any player offered any kind of contract now would sign?

I'm with @MickMillsTash on this, strange what some fans see and how others see differently.

If you had asked me about Andre earlier in the season then I would have very much backed the “too lightweight” comments and scratching my head to think how was he going to get in the team and hold a place down and perhaps would be better off in a more cultured environment as talent he clearly has.

However, despite some repeating these types of comments after the Coventry because they probably had already made their mind up about Andres worth in this League, I actually thought Andre had an excellent game which got lost in the defeat and the malaise of us not being able to win games. PL had seemed to suggest also after the Coventry game that they or he didn't know what his best position was and that needed sorting out. For me quite frankly the positioned behind played in thy e Coventry match was fine.

Now I know he has been inconsistent but it wasn't just Coventry the last 3 performances I think Andre has been getting progressively better. Also a peach of a goal against Lincoln in the cup at home.

I am pleased we have renewed his contract and would try and make him a permanent fixture going forward, the other players just need to get on the same wave length as Andre and that will happen the more he plays.

As far as all of the other out of contract players, excluding Dobra, I would release all even those we have options on. There will be enough good footballers at this level wanting work when the season resumes and wages will be driven down. I wouldn't be negotiating with anyone else at the moment with so much uncertainty.

We need a clearout. There is a massive lack of hunger, fight, desire to win and pride in the shirt in the side. Sometimes I watch and the team rollover. No fight. Pass sideways, backwards and standstill. We lose regularly to teams who have less gifted players but have bigger hearts.

Dozzell is gifted and would be better elsewhere purely on the fact that if he went to a Prem/Champ club he would have no excuses and would have to fight for his place. My impression he isn't interested at Ipswich. If he doesn't play it is because of the manager's poor judgement because he's a star. Yet when I have seen him he is average for the majority of the time but may play a great pass now and again. He lacks presence, is not physical enough for the lower leagues and gets pushed off the ball far too easily.

We need fighters who will battle for the shirt, club and fans.

I can probably count a handful of games where I have witnessed Dozzell actually having a really positive impact on a whole game. He does though, have some attributes like his range of passing and pin-point crossing that really do stand out, particularly in League 1.

Has he at any point in his town career started 10/15 games in a row, or even 5? If we are going to use him properly next season then keep him and give him a long enough run of games for him to show his potential - otherwise, if we continue to use him as a squad player which is a role that clearly doesn't suit him, why pay his wages, and why hold back his career?

Whatever the case, I hope it works out for you Andre - let's hope it happens at ITFC!

Very lucky boy in my opinion. Simply hasn't performed consistently whenever he's been picked. He's probably got the extension because of his alleged potential and his fathers surname rather than because of what he's shown on the pitch. Hopefully he'll realise he's close to being shown the exit and ups his game.

AD really does need to step up to the plate and IMPOSE himself in games . To date , he's done minimal in that department. He can't survive on his “ name” . He actually hasn't yet made a successful step up in the senior game . I just wish he would .

Might as well give the youngsters a go, downes dozzell Lancaster dobra and give them a good run

a player who blows hot and cold, has disappointed as often as not when given chance, could be one of those players that come good late ,and at a different club. Needs to make more impact, lets hope he does .

He's not taken his chances but the talent is there.... he needs the right player next to him I think.

Dobra, sign him up.... other than that in terms of 1st teamers on the list... meh.

Would love to see Keane bang in goals and I still think Danny Rowe is a giod player. Skuse is largely under appreciates by us I think but do need to move on from him now. Project Roberts has been a waste of everyones time...Edwards given the fee we paid its a shame but he started last season like a bullet.... he offers versatility.....
