Redknapp Claims Lampard Was Offered Town Job
Monday, 18th May 2020 11:20

Harry Redknapp has erroneously claimed Frank Lampard was offered the Town manager's job in the summer of 2018 prior to Paul Hurst being named the Blues boss.

TWTD revealed at the time that Lampard was interviewed twice during the Blues’ lengthy recruitment process ahead of Hurst’s disastrous appointment in the summer of 2018.

The current Chelsea boss, Redknapp’s nephew, impressed Marcus Evans and was on the final four-man shortlist, which also included Hurst, Jack Ross, who joined Sunderland, and Graham Potter, currently in charge at Brighton, however, the matter never got as far as Lampard being offered the position.

As reported that summer, the lack of money available to spend at Town was understood to be a sticking point and Lampard withdrew his interest.

Redknapp, however, speaking to Sky Sports News claims this happened after the job had been offered, which was not the case.

“I got him the job at Ipswich with Marcus Evans. I phoned Marcus Evans, I said ‘Listen, you need a manager, Frank Lampard’s your man’. He met him, loved him, offered him the job.

“Frank said ‘Harry, they’ve got no budget, it’s difficult there, I can’t bring any players in, what can I do?’

“I said ‘It’s a great club, Ipswich, Frank but you’re going to need a bit of help, you haven’t got a magic wand.

“Suddenly the Derby job became available and I rang Mel Morris. Mel’s got a house up the road from me and I get on ever so well with him.”

Morris was initially reluctant to consider Lampard but was eventually persuaded to meet him in London and Redknapp says he told him he was immediately impressed.

“‘Oh my God Harry, he’s blown me away, I’ve given him the job’. I had no doubts he would be a success.”

Redknapp, who was previously among those to advise Evans when he was looking for a manager after Roy Keane’s sacking, also expressed an interest in the job himself after Mick McCarthy’s departure but was never interviewed.

Said at time should have appointed him , could have had Mount on loan for season , been a lot more higher profile . Instead Evan's went cheap showed little ambition and we whimpered out of the league

Out of the 4 we ended up with the worst option.

Surco72. Clearly you didnt read the story then? U say u said we should have appointed him, from the start but Evan's chose the cheaper option? No, Lampard was offered the job.

Don't blame him, who wants to work for a club with little ambition and an owner not prepared to fund the manager properly? No brainer

Every M E manager appointed , other than MM has been a disaster .
Lambert's record is worst of all , was hired to keep Town up , but ended last season lower than Bolton, a club in freefall, the after a lucky start this season blew it away with stupid postponements and rotations , not helped of course by Hurst's awful signings. Please dont trust him to hire and fire this close season ….oh I forgot we have 5 more years of this !!

Astounding that we continue to hear that Evans' recruitment process consists of phone calls with Harry Redknapp. However impressive Lampard was/is, and I'd love to have had him here, Evans should have been making that decision himself.

Hard to see any "good" manager coming to Ipswich due to the lack of funds. No funds equals too few options regarding players and our recruitment is shocking etc. The fact we got PL astonished me.

It is the lack of a plan for the club as a whole that scares me. No investment in the ground, team or infrastructure. How is ME going to get the club out of League One? We are midtable League One also-rans at present. At present, the only direction we are heading is down into League Two which I predict will be the end of next season.

Please explain how ME is going to service a 100m GBP debt and get Town back in the PL from League Two?

Blues 1 , he appointed a lower league manager with little funds to back him in championship so yes a cheaper option . Obviously Lampards football knowledge was greater than Evan's as he could see Ipswich could not achieve promotion , not very appealing to a winner ?

That's the first I've heard of Potter being in the shortlist - in hindsight I'm gutted we didn't get him!

Does seem as though we went for the cheap option !

We went with the option who was prepared to lose all our best players and keep dead wood.

ChrisR I think we can categorically say Paul Hurst has the worst record of all!

Whatever happened Lampard went with the better option...very little ambition here and with little funds by Championship standards., the rest is history (usually bad when connected to Evans).

Understand Harry is looking to buy a club once this lockdown is over ......... That's what he said on Peter Crouch podcast.

Don't think it would have worked here either. look how much money he spent at Derby and they still struggle imagine what he would have done here with Evans tight budget

Exactly what we've been saying who would come here with no ambition & no money. Who will we get better than Lambert, nobody will come here. About time Evans walks, read enough about mr Scrooge🤔

I'm fed up hearing Paul Hurst was a "disastrous" appointment. He is a convenient scapegoat for a dead wood squad he tried to change; he couldn't believe the capitulation at Exeter, gave the dynamite interview afterwards, after getting into the players for not turning up, but the club had been broken for a long time. That was the point when Paul Hurst knew he was in big trouble. But he put a lot in and was very unlucky with the early results. Young players staying at the skipper's house. Cos it's cheaper and gives the skipper a bigger role. Shouldn't be allowed to happen. Far too easy to just turn up and pick up wages. That is the culture and Paul Lambert cannot and is not interested in changing it. A huge part of the decline was Mick McCarthy who got it right when he said all the best (to his successor) with no money. Only this club could get so little from players who all then go on to much better careers elsewhere. Other too but that is McGoldrick player of the season in a Top 6 premier league club. Matt Clarke. Adam Webster. Calling Paul Hurst a disastrous appointment is just wrong.

I read at the weekend that Redknapp was looking to get into club management and looking for a club in either league one or two, anyone fancy him taking over to replace Marcus.

I doubt HR wound have the level of funds required to take Town in an upward trajectory. A consortium maybe a better option .

to be fair , none of those 4 were as good as the burley/butcher option...

Those saying they're unconvinced by Lampard as a manager are completely wrong based on the evidence so far. His situation at Derby is roughly analogous to Roy Keane's here. Derby backed him with cash and Lampard took them to the Championship play-off final. In his first season as a pro manager. Roy Keane came here with a divisional title under his belt and 18 months' managerial experience in the Premier League, was backed with cash and he took us to 15th place in the Championship via our worst ever start to a season. Keane was set up to succeed and failed, Lampard could see he was being set up to fail, a legacy of Keane's tenure, so went elsewhere and got closer to success than any of Evans's choices have.
