Town Take Up Option to Keep Edwards for Another Year
Monday, 18th May 2020 12:17

Town have taken up the one-year option on winger Gwion Edwards’s contract.

The 27-year-old was among the players whose deal was due to be up at the end of June but the Welshman will now be spending at least another season at Portman Road.

Edwards has made 52 starts and 14 sub appearances for the Blues, scoring eight goals having signed for £750,000 from Peterborough in the summer of 2018.

Previously the Blues took up options to keep youngsters Andre Dozzell, Armando Dobra, Brett McGavin and Harry Wright for a further season.

Dobra, 19, has all but agreed a new three-year deal with the option for a further season, while talks with Dozzell, 21, have been ongoing since last summer and discussions with McGavin, 20, are also under way.

Played well before the break and had improved greatly at right back, which I wasn't expecting, so no surprise that he is being kept on. Also, other clubs have shown interest in him, so it makes sense to tie him down again and command a fee if he is to be transferred.

Edwards was asked to do so many different roles last season, I'm pleased he's got a new deal. KVY at right back and Edwards in front of him that's a decent right side of the pitch. They'll be able to rotate naturally between themselves, especially if KVY wants to overlap.

good, definitely worth at least another year if we can hang onto him.

less sure about the wisdom of not taking up the option on rowe , think he has potential and shouldn't be on too big a wage. however if we don't play wingers and he's looking at giving more game time to el miz and dobra, he may be less needed next year.

also not sure about skuse, can only hope that it's a wage cut and is aimed at easing him towards a coaching role, which i think will be more suited to him than playing now...

I'll go with this one 👍Can be very strong and exciting but needs to produce more consistency.

No problems with this decision. Needs to maintain consistency, and continue to improve on his overall contribution to the team.

Generally been poor this season but played somewhat better in a few games before COVID-19...

Like All our players. Hope they are self critical and improve Win, Lose or draw. That's what the best do

I feel he is worth that option(unlike skuse) as he has given his all when played out of position
will be an asset when in his preferred spot.

Its clear that he has ability - another player rated by other coaches and who has not showed his potential here. Whether that's his fault, or whether he has been played out of position is up for debate. It seems obvious to me that we have a squad that is(was) the envy of the division - and yet still manged to show relegation form since November. PL has to answer the questions...

A player with skill but no desire to be a winner. Unfortunately we have too many players who are not consistent or not motivated for whatever reason. Another player who when he 1st arrived excited but now flatters to deceive. I would have moved him on for somebody with the same skill but gives a damn, Edwards doesn't.

I can see why he's been given another year always gives one hundred percent even when played out of position .

I thought he often played very well especially out of position. Covered the out of position CB numerous times.
Will probably be disappointed not to have got a new contract, especially when others have been given a new contract who are at the end of their careers and cannot play continuous games.
Very exciting partnership if played with KVY

Seems to blow very hot and cold, more cold of late. But he has been played out of position a fair bit. I think a more attacking role would better suit his game. Wingers are notorious for being inconsistent. If we could get him playing more regularly like he did against Blackburn (on his debut) then he would definitely be worth keeping.
