Burley’s Barmy Army Wembley 2000
Thursday, 21st May 2020 17:57

BBC Radio Suffolk is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Town’s glorious 4-2 Wembley play-off victory over Barnsley with a special show, Burley’s Barmy Army Wembley 2000, featuring many of the stars of that great day, as well as fans’ memories, on Monday (2pm to 6pm).

Manager George Burley, chairman David Sheepshanks, skipper Matt Holland, Richard Wright, Richard Naylor, Marcus Stewart, David Johnson, Jim Magilton, Jamie Clapham, John McGreal, Martijn Reuser, Gary Croft, Fabian Wilnis, James Scowcroft and Kieron Dyer will be among the guests on the show presented by Mark Murphy and TWTD’s Phil Ham.

In addition, there will be commentary highlights from the game, which took place on the equivalent Bank Holiday Monday in 2000, featuring Terry Baxter and Blues legend Kevin Beattie, as well as archive commentary as Burley built his team over the preceding seasons suffering success and heartache along the way.

The show will also focus on fans’ memories, stories and memorabilia. Have you got a tale to tell about how you came by a ticket? Did you watch the game in some far-flung part of the world or Norfolk? Have you got a photo of a banner you took to the game or a late-night shot of you hugging a player deep into the celebrations late into the night? If you have, email them to Mark via mark.murphy@bbc.co.uk.

The show can be heard on 95.5FM, 95.9FM, 103.9FM and 104.6FM, and also on DAB, or online via a widget on this page by clicking here.

What a day , glad I was there . Very emotional and doesn't get much better then being at old Wembley seeing Reuser smash it in the roof net to make it 4-2 .. Memories ....

I managed to get 4 tickets in the Olympic Gallery for my wife and I and 2 sons, one of the very best football days of my life, wonderful partisan atmosphere, Barnsley fans were great, very friendly, a typical Town game, never easy, I will even confess to a little tear when the final whistle went. Still love my team, no matter where we are currently.

Just a fantastic day, excellent competitive match, good atmosphere between the fans.

Sat in Olympic Gallery which was rocking.

Had driven down night before with Father Jack, he stayed with an old school friend in Catford, I stayed with my mum in Grove Park SE12, when I arrived they had a house party in full swing.... Mainly Millwall fans.

On day of the game picked up Father Jack from underneath the black car and parked at his brother's place in Putney, then headed into town for a few drinks.

Beautiful weather, wonderful experience, great result, the atmosphere, in my opinion, was as good as at the Cup Final, probably had something to do with the scoring to be fair.

Rabbit, l was at both games and l think the atmosphere was every bit as good as the cup final but maybe the noise Town fans made at play off final may just have shaded it. Happier times.............

With a lot of luck great times may return and become the norm again. Feel sorry for our young fans who haven't had it good at all.

It was a great day but I'm sorry if the only thing we have to celebrate after twenty years is promotion form the second tier then things are getting a bit desperate.

Last special day enjoyed by our once family club.
Sadly money has ruined our national sport & its rotten from the top down !!!

i find these ,''back in time'' articles very sad, they all underline how we have declined in to the mess we are in now, all the old teams ,they really were the good old days.

I've been fortunate to see us win the old first division, the F.A cup, the UEFA cup and been at Wembley for this play off final, all of which had the same effect on me from the age of 10 to 50 left me emotional, excited and crying for the club i have loved since 1958(my first game) and now coming up to my 70th year i have no chance of seeing or experiencing anything like it again, which is so so sad!!.

My wife had never been to a professional football game until this one. With two children in tow we entered the stadium to be confronted by a wall of noise and a sea of blue. My wife turned and said “ I now understand why supporting Ipswich means so much to you”.

One of my memories of the day was how sporting the Barnsley fans were after the game.
Many shook our hands when walking back to the coach saying well played and when driving away from Wembley they were waving and clapping us

i never knew nowt about this period for 10 years or so, as i was drinking hard and do not recall even thinking about football apart from playing the odd game on the beach..
but getting promoted from the 2nd to the 1st is a minor achievement compared to the other other glories town have experienced.
finishing in the top 10 in division 1 is far superior than winning the 2nd division title for instance...
