Former Blues Defender Smith Leaves Sunderland
Friday, 29th May 2020 16:06

Former Town defender Tommy Smith has left Sunderland at the end of his short-term contract without having played a game for the Black Cats.

The New Zealand international joined the Wearsiders in February having left MLS side the Colorado Rapids at the end of their season in November and after a spell training with the Blues’ U23s.

Smith, 30, who was brought to the Stadium of Light as cover after Bailey Wright suffered a season-ending ankle injury, didn’t make an appearance for Sunderland before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis, although was an unused sub on two occasions.

I agree, sign him up. You know what you're getting with Tommy Smith. Not going to set the world alight in the Championship, but solid enough for League 1 I reckon, and certainly better than dear old Nsiala was... Maybe only a squad player if we keep Woolfie, but that is by no means guaranteed.

No, sorry, I don't agree . Tommy is the past now , we need to push on , looking for younger blood than TS . Chambers won't play many more games , but at least he has been playing regularly at Championship and League One levels . TS hasn't for what, 2 years now .IMO Smith was never all that when he did play for us .

Just sign him up town you let him slip through your fingers once in January don't let it happen again. He's exactly what we need blue & white blood through & through

Resigning a player based on sentiment is not a good idea. It rarely works out well. He had a couple of good seasons and played with his heart but we don't want anymore second best players.

Hopefully he's gonna be doing donkey rides on southend seafront and not signing for us again

If he had to sign for us I'd suggest a pay as you play contract .

He'd definitely make Chambers look better. More gaffs than Mickey Flan, no thanks. Nice 1 Toperz!

Worth a short term deal IMO.
Think in League 1 he would be a decent signing . Far better than Nsiala for me.
Not seen him for two years but he's only 30 . Few years in him yet .

A natural left-sided cb who also popped up with some handy goals. As long as he is injury free I think that we should re-sign him as the partner for Woolfie next season, assuming of course Woolfie is still here.

Its not about how good he was then or now, its about how fit he is?
He only made the bench 4 times for Sunderland and was unfit the rest of the time.
He spent 8 weeks training with without being offered a contract, I think that its time to move on with Tommy.

Like Tommy a lot met him down the training ground very nice guy. But that's not a good enough reason to sign him too many people living in the past. He was looking very slow on the turn before he left us and Sunderland didn't seem that impressed. We cant afford any more injury prone players we must move on and stop getting all sentimental.

Probably can't afford a free transfer who wants to play for us

Sorry to say this could be the end of a career

The over the top sentiment about Tommy Smith is embarrassing. He was mediocre at best when he played for us and the fact he hasn't played a game for Sunderland might suggest a little something - without the "one of our own" nonsense, he is seen for what he is, especially at this stage in his career.

Have a word with him. Couldn't agree more mate . The problem is Tommy Smith has a very good rapport with the fans so their judgement is somewhat clouded. Earlier in the season he trained with us and obviously didn't impress and now has been released by Sunderland. I wish Tommy well you won't meet a nicer guy . I can see him playing non league football.

Without wishing to do a professional assassination on him , Tommy is of the old school of centre half's , hoof first and ask question later . He's very one dimensional and simply not good enough for the game as it is now ( certainly not Championship). Unfortunately for him , he now finds himself out of work in unprecedented times, and along with many many out of work professionals, I think he'll struggle to get another Club now. Age is not in his side either when you e been playing your football in USA for last 2-3 years . As someone has said it may be hang the boots up time.

Does he have any Coaching badges completed ?

Am seriously confused. Obvs we do not know what his condition or capabilities are today, but he is the last natural defender we have had anywhere near the Club. Management will assess if he can do a job which I assume they did in Jan, but hard to think he is not better than what we have, though the headache of probably then dropping the Captain is one which maybe PL did right to swerve....from his perspective.

Tommy formed a solid partnership with Chambers a few years ago but it was broken up when McCarthy introduced Berra and we had Chambers shunted to right back. If fully fit I still think Tommy would be a handy acquisition in League 1 as being a natural left-sided cb he would be a very good partner for Woolfie assuming Woolfie stays here next season. The major question regarding the defense for me is whether Chambers will be good enough to play regularly ........

Chambo hasn't been good enough for at least 3 years.

ITFC 73 - agree with your comment but he keeps getting picked. Perhaps I should have emphasised that rather than him being good enough. If we are to compete with the top placed teams we need an experienced CB, preferably left-sided, paired with Woolfie (if he stays)

KiwiBlue2. He keeps getting picked....yes very true.
Then look at our league positions last 2 previous seasons and this, being the clubs lowest ever.
The time has come 3 years to late, to install a captain with a winning mentality.
Before it's to late.

ITFC 73 - I had hoped that Lambert would be the new broom regarding Chambers and a couple of others but sadly that has not proved to be the case. I think that he certainly needs to swing the axe as soon as this season is officially finished but we shall have to wait and see if he actually does it.

Chambo, these days especially, isn't good enough as a player or captain.
And because of the strange way the club operates, you can't have 1 without the other.
Chambo in the starting 11, without the armband....more chance of seeing pigs fly.
