League One Clubs Vote to End Season Early
Tuesday, 9th Jun 2020 16:01

League One clubs have voted by "an overwhelming majority" to end their 2019/20 season early, as had been widely expected for a number of weeks. The move sees the Blues finish 11th in their first season back in the third tier, their lowest position for 67 years.

The League One clubs were split on whether to play the season to its completion or curtail it now with the much-delayed decisive vote taking place this afternoon.

Earlier today, EFL clubs voted to use the EFL board’s preferred unweighted points per game system to settle placings, promotion and relegation in the event of the season not being played to its completion.

An EFL statement confirmed the outcome: "League One clubs have voted by an overwhelming majority to formally end the 2019/20 season.

"As a result, the final League standings have now been confirmed meaning that Coventry City have been confirmed as champions with Rotherham United securing the second automatic promotion place to the Championship.

"Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United, Portsmouth and Fleetwood Town will contest the Sky Bet play-offs with the schedule to be announced in due course, while Tranmere Rovers, Southend United and Bolton Wanderers will start the 2020/21 season in League Two."

Town’s 11th place is their lowest position since they ended the 1952/53 campaign 16th in Division Three South back in Scott Duncan's time as manager.

The Blues had been the early season leaders and after falling away before Christmas returned to the top in January before winning just one of their last nine prior to football's suspension. They were 10th at that stage but dropped a place on unweighted points per game as they'd played a game more than Gillingham.

Town were among the clubs who wanted the season played to its conclusion but it was always anticipated that around 15 sides wanted it brought to an early close, largely due to the cost of staging the games and coronavirus testing, which was more than enough to hit the required 51 per cent mark.

Earlier, League Two clubs formalised the curtailment of their season having previously taken a unanimous indicative vote with Swindon Town (champions), Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle promoted to League One.

Colchester United, Exeter City, Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town will be in the play-offs for the fourth promotion spot. Stevenage will be relegated to the National League unless any any points sanctions Macclesfield face for charges relating to the late payment of wages in March see them drop below Boro.

Good riddance 19/20, it was an interminable disaster. Reboot 20/21, preferably without Alan Judge & Jon Nolan making 20+ starts and keeping out our talented youngsters please.

Ending the season this way is nothing short of shocking. Not for us our race was run but the for the likes of Tranmere and Posh it's not acceptable. How clubs can vote not to play and then play in the play offs is wrong. Coventry deserved time go up, Rotherham if you look at who they still had to play were unlikely to get automatic promotion and Wycombe voting to end and moving from 8th to 3rd is a joke. I truly hope anyone except Wycombe go up and u hope that Rotherham get relegated next season. As for us - the saddest of times, with a wage cap likely to be in place next season we need a new manager at the helm to try and take us forward.

Pinstripe. Your last sentence was very true when last season 1st kicked off.
Next season your last sentence doesn't apply.

well it was always going to p#ss someone off which ever way it was decided, clubs must just bite the bullet now and move on. It has been a mare of a season , Any sign that things are not improving next season MUST be put right quickly and not just let to drag on.Its obvious he will still be here to start the season, but if the results dont come he should be gone sooner rather than later. IMO he will fail , i have lost any faith i had in him .I said at the end of our Championship season i couldnt see us bouncing back, and predicted a 17th place finish ,the fact we finished 11th dosnt bring any comfort. Next season is going to be bloody hard ,

Disappointed that they couldn't find a way to complete the season as they will do in Premier & Championship but understandably some teams couldn't afford it. Brings to an end an awful season that has to go down as on of the lowest points in the clubs history. Important that they finally made a decision though & amusing that Peterborough missed out. Now thoughts move to next season and to how that will work and how/when fans will be able to return. I really hope no clubs go to the wall but unless some money makes it's way to smaller clubs unfortunately some will close. Time for football to rebuild and move away from being purely about money

Seriously we can all have our comments and moan at each other.. But the club will never listen to our opinions.. We can't get any worse...

The season was always going to end weirdly, and this is the least painful weird way to end it. Now we can say - "We ended as low as 11th in League 1 once, but that wasn't a proper season because of a pandemic."

A terrible decision ; they will now have to make ANOTHER terrible decision that relates to how much of NEXT season can be played : I suspect very little of it.
The 19-20 season should simply have been turned into the 19-21 season, and restarted once it is 'safe' for spectators to return ; additional cup competitions MAY have been possible. Now it's 2 seasons that are f***ed up : not that it will make much difference to Ipswich, who won't get near the top in either ...
