Town Launch New Home Kit
Tuesday, 30th Jun 2020 14:26

Town have revealed their new home kit for the 2020/21 season which, as TWTD previously reported, is a tribute to the strip the Blues wore 40 years ago in 1980/81, the campaign widely regarded as the club’s greatest in which they won the UEFA Cup.

The shirts, produced by adidas as was the case in 1980/81, feature a one-year return of the badge worn in that era - which was replaced in 1995 - with the legend ‘UEFA Cup 40 years’ below it.

The inner back-neck of all home shirts feature Sir Bobby Robson's quote about that side, “This was my greatest Ipswich team, They were the perfect jigsaw.”

The traditional blue shirt is augmented by what the club is describing as a “seasonal change” to blue shorts, which were worn in the away leg of the final against AZ 67 Alkmaar in Amsterdam in which Town confirmed a 5-4 on-aggregate victory, as well as in the memorable away victories at St Etienne and Cologne in the semi-finals.

The socks are blue with a white trim, however, with the adidas three stripes blue rather than white as in recent seasons and in 1980/81.

The front of the shirt bears the Carers Trust logo, something gifted to the charity by sponsors Magical Vegas.

Carers Trust CEO, Gareth Howells told the club site: “We are thrilled to see unpaid carers recognised with the Carers Trust logo featured on such a special commemorative shirt. On behalf of all the unpaid carers we work with, I’d like to wish Ipswich Town every success for the new season.”

John O’Reilly, chief executive of Rank who own Magical Vegas, added: “We’re proud of our partnership with Carers Trust and we’re continually looking at ways in which we can further support the charity.

“We’re delighted that this sponsorship will shine a much needed spotlight on the fantastic work Carers Trust do in supporting unpaid carers across the UK.”

The new shirt will also feature the updated EFL name and number font as well as the logo of the EFL’s charity partner, Mind.

Fans can also have ‘Thank you NHS” added to the back of their shirts with all profits going to the Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals Charity.

The back of the shorts bear the Mortgagemove.co.uk brand. Company principle Nick Golding said: “We are delighted that the Mortgagemove.co.uk logo adorns the new kit which is a tribute to such a successful period in ITFC’s history.”

The kit can be preordered now from www.itfcshop.com with delivery as soon as they arrive at the club, late July at the latest, although the club say that is still to be confirmed due to the ongoing uncertainties caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Fans who preorder will also receive a set of six luxury postcards (worth £15) designed by illustrator George Ripton. Each postcard will depict a scene from the 80/81 UEFA Cup campaign.

Given the guidelines around social distancing and the advice given to retail stores, the pre-ordering is only available online.

We're honouring the 1981 UEFA Cup winning team by playing mid table League 1 football.

We have to sit and watch N*rwich play FA Cup Quarter Finals against Man Utd, Beat Man City in the Premiership and we lose at home to sodding Fleetwood and 'try our best to give Coventry a game'

How about you sort that out before we worry about bl00dy kits ????

We're unlikely to sort all that out playing in skins, Pete.

BTW - sorry to everyone for making the new kit launch into something negative but i for one can't stand to honour what was arguably our finest hour with the situation the club is in.
If i have to watch that lot up the road playing in the premiership beating City, Taking United all the way in the FA Cup Quarter finals while we get beaten by the likes of Fleetwood, played off the park by Rotherham and Accrington Stanley and utterly humilated by Peterbrorough i am literally going to flip i'm utterly embarrased and ashamed of seeing what we've become from what we once were and if one person in the club who wears the shirt on the pitch or manages or runs that club hurt even 1% as much as i do then something would be getting done about it.

What an odd comment by Pete.

It's a decent kit but unfortunately all it does is remind me how far we have fallen since those UEFA Cup days!

Love the kit. Glad we're honouring the greatest single achievement of Sir Bob and that amazing team. That is all.

Pete, you a Budgie? It's months since they beat Man City, they've been sh*te ever since and are on course to go down with a lower points total than the 1994-95 Town side which lost 9-0 at Old Trafford.
I'm happy to observe 40 years since our club achieved something Norwich never will.

Bobbychase - no i'm not a f*cking Budgie.

I'm a Town fan of 32 years and utterly frustrated at our current plight.

Best shirt in many years. Fantastic to see the old badge back. Looks like the glorious Ipswich Town again! I wish they would revert back to that badge as have never been a fan of the red one.

Only criticism with the kit is the shorts should have been white and have the option of the blue as and when required. I can understand the reasoning and sentiment in that we wore those shorts in the final second leg, but for the vast majority of games in that season and in that competition we wore white shorts. Seeing the Town play in blue shorts was always a rare and pleasant change and looked cool, but our kit is white shorts and should be respected. Anyway, it's a minor grumble and is just for one season (that is two seasons out of five now though..)

Also would have preferred traditional socks with three white stripes rather than the blue stripes on white. If they're going for the traditional 81 final kit, why mess with that..? But overall, a great effort and lovely to see Carers Trust on the front.

Looking forward to wearing down the pub (in 2021!)

Well done Town and Adidas. COYB!

Our badge changed format back in 1984-85 when we introduced red into our colour scheme. This was part of the deal when taking the adidas France national kit at the time which had a red band and three white stripes below it. Eventually we filled the red band with a Sponsor - Radio Orwell.

It's one logical explanation for why you think we shouldn't honour arguaby our club's greatest achievement just because Norwich fluked a win over Man City months ago.

What's the alternative, we should make kits out of manure bags and play in those until we're one of the top clubs in Europe again?

There isn't a single Town fan who isn't "utterly frustrated at our current plight."

Bobbychase - i didn't say " we shouldn't honour arguaby our club's greatest achievement just because Norwich fluked a win over Man City months ago"

I said i'm sick to the back teeth of watching them beat city and play United in the FA Cup quarter finals while we labour against cr@p in League 1 who should even be on the same s0dding pitch as us. And honouring the 81 team just reiterates how badly we've fallen since those days.

When we're released into the wild again you'll find me in the Co-Op stand Block M,, Row I, Seat 15 ..... i've normally got my head in my hands.

Here's what you said. last paragraph is about the kit launch. I quite enjoyed watching Norwich play Man Utd in the quarter finals of the FA Cup by the way, they lost and had their best defender sent off.

The return of the previous badge really caught my attention.
A nostalgic reminder for many on here I would imagine.
A simple colour scheme and retro stripes on the shorts.
A charity on the front opposed to that garish magical Vegas one.
What's not to like?

Gok Wan.

Thats saying we should be more focused on getting out of league 1 than worrying about kits

Nothing to do with the Budgies other than i'm sick to death of them being higher up than us !

Sorry - i'm not having a great day and when they put the announcement warning up i thought we were going to announce Garbutt on a permanent deal so the kit was a bit of an anti climax for me !!!!

@BaddowBlue - the badge changed to red in 1995 and had nothing to do with the 84 kit. You are right in that it was the first time the colour red was incorporated into the kit but as you said a la France world cup kit so how much of a choice did we have?

bugblatter

Pinstripes came in in 1981/82. In 80/81 the kit was the one George Best is gracing in your avatar.

BaddowBlue1 - I thought that the current badge (with the red) came in in 1995? I believe we were relegated in 1994/95 with the now-old badge and used the present one for the first time in the 1995/96 season on the "dip-dye" shirts produced by Core.

Pinstripes next year perhaps bugblatter. This shirt is celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the 80/81 season and the historic UEFA Cup win. Pinstripes came the following year.
