Sunderland and Oxford Linked With Edwards
Thursday, 2nd Jul 2020 17:22

Sunderland and Oxford United are reportedly keen on Blues winger Gwion Edwards.

According to Football Insider, the Black Cats and the U’s are both keeping tabs on the Welshman.

Town recently exercised the one-year option on the deal the 27-year-old signed when he joined from Peterborough in the summer of 2018, contracting him to the Blues until next summer.

Like Town, Sunderland will definitely be facing another campaign in League One once 2020/21 starts while Oxford face Portsmouth in the play-off semi-finals as they target the Championship.

Interesting others see a potential and strengths which have seldom consistently materialised here : hasn't impressed us ,and at times appeared rather out of place or short on positional nous .
Maybe with more football under his belt at ITFC he'd become a shoe in ,but wouldn't be a real miss right now if decent money came along .

You just know he'd have a 15 goal season if he went to one of these clubs. I wouldn't necessarily be against this transfer if it means we can buy a new left back.

Hasn't got the winning mentality and comes across as can't be arsed. Let him go and replace with a player who has the same skill or better who gives 100%.

Keep him. Another season, with him in the left wing position, will be the making of him. Keep him.

Hasnt looked much under Lambert, but who has ?

I think this is a case of a player ruined by poor management. Because of his appetite to track back and help out at full back Lambert decided to revert him to fullback. If I was him I'd move on to a club with more ambition so we can get somebody else in to moan about.

Peterborough fans said he comes out of the blocks and looks really good , then you don't notice him for the rest of the season . I'd say they pretty much sum him up.
All I notice about him since he's been at Town, is if a defender gets in his face it matches him for pace , that's it . No more Edwards showing in the game.

Wouldn't Lankester be playing in the Edwards position ? If so I'd much rather go with the youngster . He makes things happen and commits defenders . Edwards rarely threatens IMHO.

Only a few players did themselves justice last season. Edwards wasn't one. So he's bound to be half decent next season. Would hope he knows his weaknesses and do something about it.

Hopefully this is just paper talk as Edwards was as good as anyone last season
If he was played consistently out wide on the right in front of KVY then you would see the very best in Edwards.
Showed his best when playing out wide, but most of the season was compromised playing RB or RWB having to cover for the out of position and slow Chambers week after week.
Play him in his correct position on a regular basis and you will see what a good player he is !!!

Quick before they take their scouts off furlough!
All joking aside, if we are to keep him we need to play him in the right position. He can be dangerous going forwards but he does blow very hot and cold. If he could get some more consistency into his game he'd be well worth keeping.

Is Edwards good enough to be a top L1 player or decent Championship player?
No - he's an average L1 player, sell him and hope we can find someone who has the potential to be better

Very patchy and inconsistent so would let go if we can get a dec ent fee for him----but this is Ipswich!!

Let's just get some ugly apes in, batter everyone and go up. This is league one!

Consistently played out of position. No wonder we haven't got the best out of him.

I cant even remember if he's any good - Its been so long.

Edwards is too lightweight and even when he was played in his proper advanced role he often got muscled out and fell over. Zero end product and Lankaster is a better player. In Edwards defence I actually thought he improved at full back and had a couple of decent games. If we can get some money then goodbye and thanks.

Totally agree with Heathen66, not sure why so many people seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Edwards. Easily the best player in the first half of the relegation season, despite which he got shuffled around to accommodate Judge and Lankaster and then played through injured for the last third of the season. Wasn't fully fit at the start of this season and then had to play right back. It's ages since we've actually had a decent winger of our own who can run with the ball, beat people and score. His 8 goals are more than the rest of our midfield combined. If we were to have Garbutt Lankester and Edwards KVY on our flanks we'd finally have some pace, goals and talent in the side which have been sorely missing for years. Hope the club do a deal for Garbutt and make this happen.

not involved in the game enough for me

Had one or two games where he played well but considering we bought him from Peterboro when we were in the Championship and that we're now playing at that level he hasn't overly impressed me, wouldn't bother me if we sold him.

Can only go on contribution made to team. Very few goals or assists. Take the money. Clear out those not fulfilling their position. For me.....thats the the manager and the captain

This is one player I'd personally like to keep. Dynamic when on his game and pace in abundance, he's got goals in him and needs a run of games. Hopefully in the final third and not wing back, although he was fairly affective in that position.
