Blues Again Linked With Ex-Northampton Keeper Cornell
Friday, 3rd Jul 2020 11:53

Town are again being linked with goalkeeper David Cornell, who is now a free agent with his contract at Northampton up following the Cobblers' successful League Two play-off campaign. Derby County and Birmingham City are also reported to be keen on the 29-year-old.

Cornell was initially mentioned in connection with the Blues in December and again in January. Middlesbrough, Preston North End and Blackburn were said to be interested in those earlier reports.

Now, according to Football Insider, the Rams and Birmingham have joined Town in showing interest in Cornell, who was among Northampton's star performers during their League Two promotion campaign, although he was left on the bench for their play-off games with his end-of-season exit having been on the cards for some time.

Born in Waunarlwydd in Wales, Cornell started his career at Swansea during which time he had spells on loan at Port Talbot, Hereford, St Mirren and Portsmouth before moving on to Oldham in the summer of July 2015 having made only one League Cup appearance for the Swans.

In June 2016 he joined Northampton and went on to make 107 starts and one sub appearance while at Sixfields.

Cornell, who is 6ft 2in tall, was reportedly close to a first Wales call-up last season having won caps at U17, U19 and U21 levels.

Town will be looking for another senior goalkeeper ahead of 2020/21 with loanee Will Norris having departed at the end of the season and given the current financial situation the free transfer market appears the most likely source of any summer additions.

Tomas Holy, 28, is currently the only experienced keeper with Adam Przybek, 20, who signed from West Brom last summer, having made one Leasing.com Trophy appearance and Harry Wright, 21, yet to make his first-team bow.

Meanwhile, Northampton have released former Town winger Paul Anderson. The 31-year-old rejoined the Cobblers in October was a late sub in their play-off final victory over Exeter last week.

Quite short for a keeper.

With Holy as our no1 i cant see whats wrong with the young Welsh lad as back up. Last season the bringing in of Norris i felt unsettled this key position

Seems odd Harry Wright has not yet been involved with the first team and looks 3rd choice, soon to be 4th choice. Is that he is just not good enough? Is it similar to Andre Dozzell? Desperate for him to make it and had it not been for his father, would have been released by now.

this won't happen if the championship clubs are involved; this salary cap will make any such transfers impossible.

Nobody serious buys goalkeepers under 6 feet.

If the opposition for his signature is as reported he's not coming here is he!

I would love to see Harry Wright get more of a chance.

It depends what he wants, if he goes Brum or Derby he's going as back up. If he comes here he's comming to compete.

If he wants to sit on the bench and pick up his cash you couldn't blame him.... if he wants to really push for no 1 spot then he should come here.

Would also like Harry Wright to break through

if the salary cap comes in, the decision is as follows.

if he goes to a league one club he gets c1k a week, go to a championship club, he gets 5-10 times that.

if he doesn't get in the team, he may well get a loan move to league one and keep his higher wages. it's a no-brainer if the championship teams are interested.

If he goes somewhere he'll be moving for a 1st choice role. I know there have been some good shorter keepers in the past but its still an absolutely massive weakness. They can be agile and great shot stoppers but even then a full stretch for them can be comfortable for bigger keepers. Pickford is 6ft 1 and he has the same weakness honestly. I wouldn't be keen. Its just too small for a team that struggles from set pieces. We are not dominant defending crosses as it its. Woolf and Chambo are not the biggest.

Maybe if we had towering CBs...

Lincoln away, Wycombe away -Will Norris - that's how bad things were before lockdown.

Is he actually 5ft 11. Wiki says so. Other sites say 6ft 1 or 6ft 2 based on cm convertions....

Playing as poorly as we have done for the last two (and more) seasons, the drop into League one and now this salary cap creates a perfect storm. When it comes to recruiting talent decent enough to push us on for promotion, I'm afraid we're not a very attractive prospect.

Ex-Northampton goalkeepers, lower-league journeymen and non-league never-will-be's are our targets... God help us all!

What have we come to?

Northampton seem to have quite a number of players out of contract or released. In this case maybe he just wants a move away but feels a bit odd that they appear to have a number of prospects on their way out for a newly promoted team.

Slightly underwhelming, but the reality of the pond in which we're now forced to fish. With GKs - particularly at this physical level - size does matter. No doubt further stories will emerge!

Harry Wright is not 6 foot either. That said he played really well against Braintree in that awful friendly two years ago on a bone hard and grassless pitch. Northampton were lucky to be in the play offs. Perhaps Cornell knows that and would prefer Ipswich unless a Championship club comes in for him.

It was Nearly 50 years ago that Bobby signed Paul Cooper and it was over 50 years ago that Sivell signed for Ipswich. Goalkeepers are generally bigger in todays game!

Do we need four keepers? Very glad that Norris is no longer in the squad though, terrible signing and even more terrible decision to play him

At 22yrs old Harry Wright needs to be pushing for a first team place the fact that he's not suggests he should go out on loan. I'm all for giving youngsters a chance but only if they are good enough not for reasons of parenthood. As for goalkeepers height i dont think 5ft 11inch is too short for a goalkeeper as long as they are physically strong enough doesn't seem to have held him back so far other clubs wouldn't be interested if this was affecting his performances.

I would prefer us to go for Remi Matthews from Bolton. He was excellent in a very poor messed up side last season & we have previously been interested in him. His contract with them came to an end last week, so he fits the profile of someone we'd go for.

we'll be trawling through pub teams for players the way things are going , we missed the opportunities to make meaningful investment, now we are screwed. No longer are we the ''massive club '' . people refer to still, we are Lge 1 ALSO RAN's , now having to look at clubs like Fleetwood, Wickham in the eye. The Evans era has ,as has been predicted by some for a long time brought the club to this level, and yes things could still get worse. With no reason to think we will be any better this next season i fear for the future .
