Blues Linked With Bristol Rovers Striker
Thursday, 9th Jul 2020 14:45

Town are reported to be showing interest in Bristol Rovers striker Jonson Clarke-Harris.

According to Bristol Live, the Blues have started making background checks into the 25-year-old, who scored 16 times in League One in the curtailed 2019/20 season.

They say that another promotion-targeting League One side are also interested but so far there has been no contact or bids regarding Clarke-Harris.

The Leicester-born frontman joined the Gas from Coventry in January 2019 and is contracted until June 2021 with talks regarding new terms having recently resumed.

A number of clubs are reported to have watched Clarke-Harris in the first half of 2019/20 but only Charlton showed serious interest which ultimately came to nothing, although the Addicks are said to still be keen.

Much-travelled Clarke-Harris, who is 6ft tall, started his career at Coventry where he became their youngest ever player when he made his debut as a sub aged 16 years and 21 days in August 2010.

He moved on to Peterborough two years later, then Southend (loan), Bury (loan), Oldham, Rotherham, the MK Dons (loan), Doncaster (loan) and the Sky Blues for a second spell which was initially on loan before becoming permanent.

Town are known to be in the market for another striker this summer with Will Keane’s contract not having been renewed at the end of the season.

Whether they would be in a position to pay a fee - and Clarke-Harris would certainly command a significant figure even in the present climate - remains to be seen given the current financial situation.

Earlier in the week, the Blues were linked with Sunderland’s Charlie Wyke but sources close to the Black Cats quickly played down the likelihood of the former Bradford man being available.

Whether we buy ,or it's simply a rumour , it'll be interesting to see the further details if they emerge for they'll be an indicator of the mindset both at ITFC and throughout the League .
Fees will surely be constrained given the very uncertain circumstances , but there may be bargains as clubs seek to stabilise and shore up their own finances ahead of any 20/21 season .

Saw a fair bit of him last season and he was terrific from what I saw. A resounding yes from me, although he'd probably be looking for something a little more inspiring than us right now.

chepstowblue. You say he may be looking for something more inspiring than us. Given his track record and list of clubs he's been at, we probably would look a step up for a potential move for him, irrespective of our form in this calendar year.

There is no doubt we need more fire power up front. I'd like this rumour to be true, but past experience doesn't make me all that optimistic.

The last striker we signed from Rovers worked out really well.... 700k in a season where there will be more frees available than any other time ....? Paper talk

sounds promising player, but if we are serious it needs to be done sooner rather than later. Good goal tally, but then so had Norwood , I personally have no faith in him now .

Norwood carried an injury. We should expect an improvement.

My Bristol Rovers supporting mate really rates him but the sort of money Rovers are looking for rules us out I would suggest.

Given the noises coming out of PR I genuinely cannot see us paying anything more than a token fee for anyone so I wouldn't be getting too excited over links like this.

All these links to strikers makes me wonder if we're expecting anything from Morris and Folami in the year ahead. If either of them is going to make it, it needs to be now, I would have thought. And they have both shown flashes...

Living in Bath i've seen this guy a few times and feel he would be a good asset(if Mick doesn't get Bristol city job and takes his mates(please) west) then a straight swop for 4&8 sorted!!.

Could someone please advise if we are currently allowed to sign players at the moment? To be honest I have lost track about when the transfer window is!

arc completely agree and good point, where is our progression of youth players- Morris looked great coming through, Folami definitely seemed to have calibre, and Lankester should be one to nurture shouldn't he, injury recovery permitting. Our development of home grown players over the last 10-15 years has been pitiful.

In my opinion it's clear we actually need wide midfielders, a new leading centre back and a striker.

As things stand we have Norwood, Jackson, Sears, Morris and Folami for next season. If we somehow managed to sign Clarke-Harris that would give us 6 strikers which might be 1 or 2 too many so presumably some would need to be moved on. Hopefully Lankester and Dobra will be good to start the season along with K V-Y and possibly Garbutt so we do have some level of offensive potential.
My major concern is closing the charity shop that the defense has been for the past few seasons. Simply acquiring one dominant cb to partner Woolfie would be a major step forward. Wilson and Ndaba would be reasonable as back-up. Until that issue is sorted out we are likely to continue to gift at least one goal per game.

All these rumours are initiated by agents - I pay no attention to them other than it is well identified we are a striker short on what we had last season. Not that he provided anything spectacular. Whether he is replaced by young players coming through we will see.

As for 'have a word's comment re development of young players being pitiful it may be a bit harsh a word to say pitiful. Not sure we haven't tried just nothing really substantial been made of it recently. Woolfy and Downes could change that one could argue.

To be honest, you can sign all the strikers in the world, but if you give them no service then no matter who you have their chances to score will be limited.
If I was looking for alternative strikers would look to sign Keifer Moore, who has proved himself at this level and above and with Wigan in administration, could be a bargain.
However as mentioned on here, I would be looking at a CB to partner Woolfenden, and creativity that we could pass to (and not lump it forward) in the midfield.

At least we are being linked with strikers which is what we need.

I am not counting Freddie in my list for next season----he is just not good enough, end of.

No chance of getting Keifer Moore im afraid especially after the way we treated him last time he was here they'll be plenty of championship clubs after his signature. It seems to be an ongoing theme that when players leave us they start performing like world beaters strange that.
