Keeper Matthews Training With Town
Wednesday, 22nd Jul 2020 17:06

TWTD understands former Bolton Wanderers keeper Remi Matthews joined the Blues squad for the start of pre-season training earlier today.

Gorleston-based Matthews asked Town keeper-coach Jimmy Walker if he could train with Blues while he looks for a new club having left the Trotters after the League One season was curtailed.

The 26-year-old is understood to be interesting a number of Championship clubs and sides abroad.

Matthews started his career at Norwich City - where he will have been coached by Town first-team coach Matt Gill - during which time he spent spells on loan at Burton Albion, Doncaster Rovers, Hamilton Academical, Plymouth Argyle and Bolton, a switch which became permanent in January 2019.

The 6ft ½in tall keeper was linked with the Blues and a number of other clubs last summer during the Trotters’ financial problems but ultimately remained with the Lancastrians as they were relegated from League One.

Town are expected to be in the market for a second senior keeper this summer to vie with Tomas Holy for a starting position with loanee Will Norris having returned to Wolves at the end of the season.

Aside from Holy, youngsters Adam Przybek, 20, and Harry Wright, 21, are currently the only professional keepers at the club.

What little ive seen of him he's ok. Don't know whether he would come as understudy though. It's more likely we will get another keeper on loan .

Seems certain our coaches and entire management team are continuing to act positively and with professionalism ( with backing from ME !).

Heard he's a good shot stopper, poor distributer and not very commanding, also with him being just over 6ft doesn't look great on paper. What he'd be like with a better defence I don't know but if he's on a free why not give him a chance

Suffolk boy, have you been in a coma? You know ME has made us an irrelevant joke in division 3?! You seem in love with him! 🤣

We all know that Lambert will get in another experienced keeper & keep rotating them. I'm sure he's doing it purely to annoy us.

People don't actually read the article then. Clearly states he asked if he could just train with us whilst he looks for a club, and with interest from Championship clubs you can probably rule this out.

Season not even started yet bluearmy 81 and you still crying. Maybe people are just happy that we are still around and not facing a uncertain future.

Very good keeper for this level.
Hope we get it done.

He's backed us all the way into a corner in League One! Way to go Marcus!

Have I missed something, he is looking for a club to train with, having been released by Bolton.

WTF has that got to do with Marcus Evans, honestly some of you are just like a stuck record. I bet you are a real laugh to go for a beer with!!!!

@algarvefan it was just a follow up from a comment further up saying "with backing from ME!"
Others noticed it too.
And as you said, nobody has been signed. If he gets an offer from a Championship club I expect he'll go there. I can't see Evans offering more than a Championship team. If he impresses here (and nobody higher up comes in for him), then there might be a chance of us keeping him perhaps. Last I heard we were being linked with the Northampton goalkeeper.

I have wanted us to bring in Matthews for a while now, so I see this as a very positive development. Hopefully a deal can be arrived at & he has a great opportunity to demonstrate his character as well as his footballing ability.
He is a very good keeper for Division 1 level & certainly good enough for Championship football. He would be a great addition & with him being out of contract, represents a transfer fee the owner is prepared to pay.

This comment section has the same standards as a vanarama team, we don't need keepers for a free, we've been doing this for years, it only worked for 1 season and that was a massive fluke with a sad ending, and is the reason for our downfall. just keep the same squad with a different manager.

An inch bigger than Harry Wright I believe. Could be useful if he wants to come to a club that will still exist. More bad taste from our non attending northern ‘fan' .

A nice away game at Charlton to look forward to with 2,500 away fans but alas our northern ‘fan' will not be there.

When you assume you make an ass out of u and me Bert (mainly you.) I have been to 46 away grounds following the town including 5 in London. I'm not a real fan though as I don't have endless patience for Evans endless, chronic failures and I'm not just greatful we exist, I have higher ambitions for my club than that... Shoot me

Soon be the new season time to start the moronic bashing of Marcus Evans. While I'm not his biggest fan people have short memories without him we could have been another Bolton. Anyway i can't see many people queing up to buy the club only a certain numpty spreading rumours about Ed Sheeran dream on.

Live in Gorleston and Know Remi through football when we was younger, Ipswich want him and he wants to sign and come back to the area due to a change in personal circumstances, watch this space

Link boy, would we? We were out of administration and things were improving. There were other potential buyers, such a shame we ended up with the massive failure that is ME. If he hadn't got his incompetent clueless hands on us we could also have been another Leeds, Palace, Wolves, Leicester, Burnley! Why do town fans have such a cautious, better the devil you know attitude in the face of such abject, shambolic failure? Genuine question
