Lambert: We Have to Learn From Last Season
Thursday, 23rd Jul 2020 10:18

Boss Paul Lambert says everyone at Town, including himself, has to learn from last season in which the Blues finished a disappointing 11th in League One having topped the table in the opening months and again in January.

The Town manager was back at Playford Road yesterday for the start of pre-season training ahead of 2020/21.

“We have to learn from last season. We all do,” Lambert told the club site.

“I have looked at myself and what I could have changed. I always do that.

“I’ll speak to the lads and ask them for their opinions. We are all in it together and we need to stick together if we are to be successful.

“Results hurt us over the last two months, having been top in January but we mustn’t forget the good things we did either.

“It’s about looking forward now and I’m more determined than ever to get it right next season.”

The new season is expected to start on September 12th with a decision set to be made at a meeting tomorrow.

No ifs or buts the improvement has to be sustained. The squad is good enough by League One standards so promotion has to be achieved at the second bite. We all, well most of us, give a huge emotional commitment to our club and want PR to be rocking again. Wins and total commitment by players will achieve that.

The worst thing we could do would be to think that the same team would get things right this time round. We need to move on and not rely on those who underperformed. For me, this development would mean a more settled first eleven including at the very least a new, tough, seasoned striker who could get his head on the ball and a new, tough, seasoned centre back who could do the same. Then I hope that our younger talents will have gained experience and come back stronger, that Norwood and KVJ are fully fit, and that we phase in one or two more yoofs as appropirate: so among others, I would expect Wolf, Downes (hopefully), El Miz, Dobra. McGavin, and Lankester to contribute significantly to the rejuvenated look. We move on. COYB!

I make no apologies for keep banging on about Lamberts 26% win percentage, but if that don't improve next season we'll be down, end of.
Lambert lost the crowd during that final 4 game losing streak, fans staying behind to vent there frustration was clearly evident, a start like last season is priority otherwise toxic times will return, pronto like!

Sorry but even when we were top it was due to luck more than judgement. Then over time our lack of professionalism and ruthlessness crept in and stayed and we didn't learn then. If we can genuinely learn then we will get somewhere. Just not sure if too much damage is done. We are still bleeding from dropping out of championship like a wet lettuce. I believe in Paul Lambert as football does surprise you. Maybe a surprise with longevity is around the corner :-/

Under Lambert or not if we want to progress ditch the error ridden underperformers who cost us points every week our youngsters will only learn from their own mistakes on the park not sat on the bench(or in the stands) scratching their heads watching the same old tired performances sending us down the plug hole.

Paul Lambert and all the players have had a very long time to examine themselves and how they performed last season. Can we please look forward and not back. What's gone is gone and Paul Lambert may be the master of spin but at least give him and the players a chance to put things right.
If it hasn't improved after a dozen games in then yes time for change. Until then please back all at the club.

Straight from the Lee O'Neill book of PR spin.

There seems to be two very clear camps here. Those who are for getting rid of PL due to his bad mis-management over the second half of the season and those who want him to rectify his mistakes. He is paid to win games, which at the beginning he did! Then he cocked things up badly which was rewarded with a five year contract! Very odd. In this situation we have to give him the benefit of extra time, certainly until November. It is now up to him, but I must say looking at his recent history at other clubs such as Aston Villa and Stoke he failed miserably. Personally I fear he will find it difficult but I want him to do well. As to his ability, well that is in doubt at this present time. What the doubters like many who have made very negative comments about him must get off his back and see positively what he can achieve going forward, certainly until November and then let us all make up our minds then. We have had some brilliant managers at the club who didn't make an auspicious beginning and others some awful ones as well who started well. So let's give him our full backing again and let him prove himself. I for one want him to take us out of this sorry situation because if he doesn't there are proven managers who can.

StoweTractorBoy- spot on, Chambers must not play next season. As you said, he cost us games with his woeful defending last year, starting with Sunderland at home! How did he not get dropped after that one? Oh yeah, he,s a good club man! He,s good in the dressing room! What a lot of drivel! He,s shocking on the pitch and that's all that matters to most fans, the sooner he,s gone the better, then l may come back to watch the team l,very supported since 1965!!

After Lamberts only Success with Norwich, guess who was his co-pilot, Ian Culverhouse of course, since these two parted company, Lambert has had no success (Villa, wolves, Blackburn, and Stoke) but as a Public Relations man YES. As a Manager here at Portman Rd we have yet to find out ??? as the going is not good so far.

See nobody on here has mentioned that the incredibly average Wycombe got promoted!...yes little Wycombe! They had a game plan it seems that throughout the season (very little possession countering attacking and fairly good at set pieces) it worked. Tells us what dire straits we are in.

PR Paul = Superfluous Spin Doctor extraordinaire ....but above all also a Football Managerial LOSER extra-extraordinaire!

The only man in UK professional sport to get gargantuanly rewarded for failure ...i.e. with an utterly indefensible 4+ year extension, and that after a 1-win-in-14-run???!!!

Begone you on-the-field inept twit!

And please use your super gifted tongue to persuade Marvelous Marcus to sell up plus take awesome (not!) Ohhhh'Neill with him on the way out. Thanks in advance from a for 40 some long years fan, albeit with no realistic changes in site make that *former* fan I'm afraid!

Yes we were top early on in the season and it was looking promising. I looked forward to going again and even took in some away matches. However, what I remember (and it seems a long time ago now) is that we only played well for half a game.

We would be lack lustre in the first half then come out a dominate the second half often trying to play catch up. Or, we would come out all guns blazing first half and then the opposition would work out how to stop us playing and get back to us.

What we need to learn is that we need to be on top form for the whole 90 minutes!

We really missed K V-Y when he was injured. I was not sure of Norwood and it looks like he was carrying a injury. With those two back fit it gives me some hope together with some of the exciting youngsters, but we also need experience and an old head, unfortunately our 'senior' players are no longer up to it.

With the season starting in September we will soon see if he has leant anything. Unfortunately like Mick before him, I fear he will continue to do exactly what he did last season and hope that things turn out better.
He needs a plan and a system and needs to stick to that. The Teams in the L1 and L2 Play-offs all had a system and all knew what they were meant to be doing...even if it is hoof it to Akinfenwa (if you have those tools then use them), however do not hoof aimlessly to Norwood, Jackson or Sears. These players need the ball passed into the channels for them to get onto, and not just scrap for 2nd and 3rd balls.
I believe in this league we should be playing 3 up top and taking the game to the opposition, not filling the side with holding Midfielders in an attempt to stop the opposition.
Time will tell with the signings (or possibly lack of) over the next 4-5 weeks as to whether PL and all at ITFC have leant anything
Unfortunately like Hurst before him, senior players seem to have far too much influence at the club which I know is not just here (look at DeGea at Man Utd who despite all his mistakes plays every week as OGS dare not upset the senior players).
The players and management should have analysed every game available from last season to see what went wrong whilst not training or playing.
Time will tell !!!

If Lambert hasn't worked out how to be a good manager after all his years at it, what confidence that he's going to learn now?

If anyone genuinely believes we were doing well, I'm afraid you're gonna be mistaken, league one is a very very poor league and with 4 wins in what 27? Just shows how poor we really are. I'm not one but optimistic about next season.. 14th for me.. If we are lucky

We could do with a couple of Patrick Vieras in midfield rather than the ‘How does my hair look' type

Britanniaman, l have also posted on this site previously that PL had his best days as a manager when Ian Culverhouse was his right hand man. Apparently Culverhouse took all the training sessions at Narwich. Wonder what happened at Villa for him to get sacked, bullying was the reason l read but don,t some pampered little darlings that are footballers need a kick up the jacket now and again? I,d say bring him here and get shot of the ineffective Taylor & Gill. Mind you wouldn't,t our number 4&8 go running to the owner like they did with Doig!

Totally agree "dockerblue" re your 4&8 comment these 2 have had such an easy ride(that's what creeping does for you) since joining our club while continually costing us points with errors that schoolboys don't make unless they are removed then we are going nowhere, and by removed i mean thrown out not moved back stage their whole behaviour is not becoming of a town player.

Gas Bag Lambert has had loads of chances in the last ten years and the best he has delivered is nothing better than 1tth or 15th in relevant leagues.
A pony without a trick and no ability to learn from mistakes.
SACK HIM NOW!
