Boro and Luton Linked With Edwards
Tuesday, 11th Aug 2020 12:27

Championship sides Middlesbrough and Luton Town are reported to be showing interest in Blues winger Gwion Edwards.

According to Football Insider, Boro and the Hatters are keen on the Welshman, who they previously linked with Sunderland and Oxford United.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract, the Blues having taken the one-year option in his deal earlier in the summer.

While Town might be open to offers given that situation, it appears unlikely that the Blues would look to sell any of their first-team regulars ahead of 2020/21 with the £2.5 million salary cap making it difficult to replace them.

Existing contracts are treated as if they are worth £113,000 a year while any new signings’ terms would be taken at their full value.

Edwards joined the Blues for £700,000 from Peterborough in the summer of 2018.

The important part may be that he is in the last year of his contract. Therefore, if he wants a move, either we sell now and are paid some sort of fee or lose him for nothing in a year.

Obviously the calculation may change if we are promoted, but how likely is that?

What is it with ITFC? We buy a player who is obviously a good left sided player having done well for another club and then we play him in a different position and he doesn't do as well. He then gets poorer reviews such as why did we buy him? Will our club ever buy a player and play him in his best position? It beggars belief. He is a really good player who we need to keep and play him on the left where he is best suited. This has to come down to managers who mess about with positions to suit problems of their own making. Don't destroy settled players by asking them to play in a different position because there is a deficiency in the squad. Get someone in who can play in the problem area or use the younger members of the squad to fill that position. Have faith in the youth or they will not come through. Robson promoted Terry Butcher to centre half when there was a similar situation and look how he came through to eventually play for England! Keep him for heavens sake as we need to keep quality this year to get out of this division.

Play him as a left winger.... stick Freddie up front, sell Jackson, get replacement....

If Freddie doesnt get the goals I'd happily see Lankester be given a chance.

If we had Graham as a bully boy option to come on plus a left back and a solid back up keeper (Think Holy looked good last year, no need to rotate, esp your GK) I'd be fairly happy.

Shame about Morris

There seems to be a policy on TWTD if in doubt get rid. The problem is the players we want to get rid of (no names) nobody wants them.

Can we really judge the quality the of any of our current squad? All the Ipswich managers they've played under haven't been able to get the most out of any of them and as McGoldrick has proved, under a good manager and in a better team, any of our current players could be really good with a few exceptions.

Norfolkbluey. He started his career as a right wing back. So not playing out of position.

If we get a good price then sell him. We have Lankester, Dobra, El Mizuri and Sears to play wide. I'd much prefer to see these young exciting players actually play. Edwards 2 seasons with us have been far from impressive.

Give him a run of games in the final third. He was top draw and ‘dynamite' (lol) in that role under Hurst. One of a few players capable of getting a south-stander's ass off their seat 😂

I know I'm gonna get slaughtered but I'd sell him. You can't just keep a lazy player who just doesn't do it just because of new salary cap. When he's played as a winger how often does he take players on and go past them and put in a telling cross. He hates tracking back. When he's played as a defender you can see he hates playing there and often gets caught out of position. He was signed from Peterborough and they were pleased to see him go. Sell him and get a young defender or winger who shows potential and wants to improve and further his career. Edwards wants an easy life and gets it here. Time for him to move on.

Irrespective of whether he goes/stays......does not contribute anywhere near enough to the team. Cant defend, doesnt create chances, rarely scores. Yet another player being paid a fine living for ........erm.........er........(shrugs shoulders emoji)

I know we can't really use the money for wages to replace him, but I'd prefer Dobra, Lankester, Sears and Jackson all given chances to start in the wide forward roles ahead of him so if we can get decent money for him now I would take it before we lose him for nothing

Sell Jackson and Edwards and keep the old crocks Bishop, Huws, Sears etc sounds like a recipe for success. Can't see many clubs queuing up to buy these players dont know why.

Another player ruined by ITFC. Watch him become a really good player when he leaves.

blues1: I know, but other clubs should know the salary cap will hurt clubs in League One a lot when selling a player so it will cost a lot more for them to buy any of out players this window.
