Norris: Whoever Was the Best in Training Played
Friday, 14th Aug 2020 19:30

Former Blues loanee Will Norris has been reflecting on his season at Portman Road having completed his move from Wolves to Burnley. The 27-year-old goalkeeper has signed a three-year deal with the Clarets.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here,” Norris told the Burnley official website. “It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m looking forward to getting going,” said Norris, who spent last season on loan move at Ipswich Town.

“I heard Burnley were interested and it just went from there really, and it’s the perfect fit for myself and the right opportunity.”

Norris looked back on his career which has taken him from non-league to the Premier League including last season’s spell with the Blues in which he made a number of high-profile errors in his 20 appearances as Town finished 11th in League One.

“I’ve played from the Conference all the way through to the top-flight and it’s been a natural progression through the divisions, much like Popey’s to be honest,” he added.

“At Wolves I joined a really good Championship side, with John Ruddy as number one. But they just took off in leaps and bounds, and although you are buzzing that it is happening, you’re thinking that your opportunities are becoming very limited.

“Then with the loan at Ipswich last season, it was like whoever the best 11 were in training played and there were a lot of changes throughout the season, all over the pitch.

“We just had a great squad depth, there were a lot of good players, but it was obviously disappointing to end the season how it did.

“Now is time for me to sort of regroup and start a new challenge, which is here at Burnley Football Club.”

Oh dear, that is not a quote which reflects well on Lambert.

"it was like whoever the best 11 were in training played and there were a lot of changes throughout the season, all over the pitch"
- And there you have it in a nutshell.

That's not actually as daft as it may sound. Mick constantly stated that his team selection was influenced more by performances in training than any other factor.

But Norris doesn't come across like he's saying that 8n a complimentary way. Quite the opposite really.

He spent far too much time in the side than his performances / form warranted and kept OUR GK out of the side. He was certainly no better than Holy, in fac5 I'd say he was the worst keeper.

Poor Burnley.
He cannot save left, he cannot save right.
Will Norris, makes me look alright!

After several howlers I was very surprised that PL persevered with him when we had our own player who had generally been error free left to warm the bench. I hope that things go well for him at Burnley and heave a sigh of relief that he will not be back here...... amen.......

Top of the list of players I will not be putting in next season's FPL team.

How on earth have Burnley signed him after his season with us?

Hopefully Lambert has included that as one of the mistakes from last season that he is learning from.

He's trying to explain why he only played half the games for us in a way that doesn't reflect badly on him, as he's no doubt feeling the pressure having lept up two divisions.

I'm sure Lambo is influenced by performances in training, just the same as any manager. It's nothing new.

Team selection should be influenced by performance levels in training. If not what incentive is there for any player not in the first eleven ? From what I saw last season there was not much to choose between Norris and Holy. Both are mediocre. I can see Cornell as our new number one.

Influenced by but not dictated by. If someone clearly isn't training well it sends the wrong message and suggests that player has more to offer than he is currently giving. However, it is how someone performs on the pitch that matters most. That needs careful management taking into account factors such as confidence (bred from knowing they have a role to play) and fitting in with and knowing the players around you (which comes from knowing the role you and they have and consistently playing and training with them in those roles).

Going to be a lot of rotation this season if there are more fixtures per week but needs more careful management than appeared to happen a lot of last season.

Good insight into Lamberts thinking, I had assumed he used a kids bingo set to pick the numbers.

I'm not trying to be contrary, but I'm absolutely fine with training performance being the criteria by which players are selected for the squad. If there are players that don't like it, then they need to step up in training. However, this must apply to all the players. A manager can't have their favorites and then ask players in only 6 or 7 positions earn their spot.

I was up at Playford Road last season for an under 18 game. I had to run to get the ball from a wild clearance, next day I had a letter telling me I was in the 1st team for Saturday. Support the team.

Some fans...While I think that Lambert chopped and changed too much last season (and there has to be some rhyme and reason), would some fans prefer that the players that performed the worst in training would start?

Genuinely one of the worst goalkeepers I've seen at the club. Our whole season went t*ts up when we dropped Holy for him just to appease Wolves' loan agreement.

Genuinely confused by some responses on here.
There are the moaners complaining PL picks his favourites no matter what their performance, then Norris says its based on performance in training so there's potential for shift in selection and some complain.
One is consistent but may not be the most in form, the other in form but potentially inconsistent.
One is set in stone and encourages complacency, the other makes it hard for squads to gel.
Make your minds up- should he keep his favourite team for stability or pick based on current form in training?
Some complain no matter what. The most inconsistent in Ipswich seem to be the supporters.
